Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 137: Counting the long summer days

Question for fellow Lodgers, financial in nature:

I have a large % of my 401k in stock options from my company, about 65%. This is because whenever my company matches my contributions, I get that match in company stock. The stock has been steadily increasing, which is why I have 65% in company stock instead of ~50%. Since it has been going up I have stuck with it, with the plan of diversifying whenever I felt the time was right. Given the potential implosion of the economy in the next week or so, I'm thinking now might be the time to move that into something a little more stable. Someone that knows more about this than I do: Is there something more stable, other than gold, which I can't move my 401k into?

You could take all of the money out of your 401k [for up to 60 days i believe]. Then put it back in after you see what the government is going to do about our economy. I mean if you are worried that its going to emminently crash and you will lose all of your value.

As far as what else to invest in, I dont know. I suck at that part. I usually just spread it out so that no one thing can hurt my portfolio.

I don't think I want to take it all out, I think I just want to spread it around more, so I can't get sunk by having so much invested in one stock. But then, maybe having my money invested in a strong, thriving company is the best thing if the government is going to implode. I don't know enough about it to say one way or another. Mainly I was just wondering if someone had a "the belief is that bonds will be fairly stable through this government turmoil, so that would be the best bet on being the safest investment" type of advice. I really don't know what I'll do with it, and mabye its not that big of deal, I am still young, and in the long run, the amount I have invested right now will look pretty miniscule.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 137: Counting the long summer days

I'd suggest diversifying. Invest in a low-cost total stock fund.

And don't worry about the upcoming week - whatever happens, everything will recover and be worth a lot more by the time you think about retiring.

Investing some money in a commodity fund might not be a bad idea, either.

Speaking of investments, I got dividends from another one of mine yesterday. Sold three steers at $110cwt. :)

On a seperate topic. Im dragging my feet a bit on buying a ticket for Vegas. I have to buy 2 other plane tickets first (Atl and SF). So its a bit of a cash drain at the moment.

Plus, has anyone else said they want to go?

People have said that they want to go, but no one has actually committed, so it looks like everyone I've talked to is in the same boat as you. Waiting is fine with me, I still have a bathroom to finish and some stuff left to buy for that, so the extra cash drain can be pushed back and it will be perfectly fine with me. I'm guessing that in about 2 months people will have a better idea if they'd be able to go.

Hell, I'm not sure I would even want to eat any the stuff he made today.

Veloute -- cranked up to a nice meaty mushroom gravy -- is what will save your life if you ever have to eat at a vegan Thanksgiving. (Don't ask.) Believe me, you'll be pouring it over everything.

I would 1) not even show up if I knew ahead of time 2) leave as soon as I found out.

Well, now of course we all want to know. How, besides dousing everything in veloute/mushroom gravy, does one pull off a vegan thanksgiving?

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 137: Counting the long summer days

It is not possible. You cannot call it Thanksgiving without having turkey of some kind. And I don't even like turkey.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 137: Counting the long summer days

So grill a steak for supper after eating turkey dinner for lunch. :p
We always have turkey and ham, for a little variety. I always have turkey, even though it isn't my favorite. Smother it in enough gravy and it tastes just fine. One year my grandpa deep fried a turkey, after injecting marinade in it, and it was easily the best turkey I've ever had, I could have eaten that for days. I also don't mind turkey on a sandwich, so its not like I have a broad dislike for it. :p

You should try the ones I inject with beer, oil, garlic and other spices, then smoke. Mmm, juicy!

That sounds like it would be quite good. Its all in the preparation, I'm just not a fan of the standard, run of the mill, roasted turkey.
