Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 137: Counting the long summer days

Thanks for the advice. I had already Febreezed the hell out of the house.
Right now I've got some cloves and cinnamon on the stove, it may only be covering the smell, but it's covering the smell. I'm about to go to bed, and debating the windows. You know how skunk smell lingers for a couple of days, even outside? I'm not sure if it'd be better to close the windows and keep the outdoor skunk smell out, or leave them open to hope the indoor skunk smell gets out. I think I've been basking in the smell long enough that I can't determine if outside or inside smells worse.

Good night Lodge. *yawn*

Oh, and should anyone run into a skunk problem, this lady was a bit extreme, but some of her recommendations were good:

The solution she used on the dog is what the vet I called recommended.

Good morning to tLodge! ;)

The peroxide and baking soda mix is what we used on our dog. As for the house, let's just say it takes time... a long time. Baking soda seemed to work on the carpet.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 137: Counting the long summer days

Hanging in there so far today... once the meds kick in I'm better but I'm still rather anxious.

My SSD (hard drive) crapped the bed over night... woke up around 4:30 am to an annoying beeping sound. I'm going to try to wipe the drive and reinstall windows tonight but I'm not optimistic. I know those things have write issues over time but I thought I did most of the right things. Blah. :( Not something I want to be dealing with.

Unless you're entering a building of some sort, I'd think it is. Land is (or should be) a whole 'nother set of laws. I mean, I don't know for sure, but would sure as heck like to find out.
Most locales don't allow you to claim self defense unless you can reasonably state you thought your life was in danger (i.e. someone breaks into your house at night and you shoot them in the dark). Someone simply trespassing on your property would be a different set of circumstances. Plus I think I read awhile ago two people got prosecuted for murder when they shot and killed a would-be burglar at their car dealership. They clearly had no reason to believe they were in danger as the trespasser was attempting to flee when they started firing.

That must not have happen in Texas ;)

Crap. I knew I had to go to Iowa this week. Just realized how ****ing long the drive is to Coralville, IA - about 5 hours. I'm not a big fan of long drives alone (although it's better than riding with some folks). Bad enough that I have to go to Iowa, but wasting almost a day each way really sucks...

ETA: Oooh, preseason USHL game in Cedar Rapids the night I'm going that way. Maybe I can make that work....

What you gonna be doing down here?

The drive isn't all that bad: I-35 to US-20 to I-380.

Yeah, I've done it before, but usually flew to CID and then drove rental car down. I did quite a bit of work in Iowa City for a couple years. It is the ISHE conference - nice acronym, eh? Iowa Society of Healthcare Engineers. I'm doing the vendor show. I've spoken at it before, but not this year. One year I had given my presentation and heard another presenter had canceled and they were scrambling. I said to the conference director "If that ever happens and you need someone to speak, let us know. Several of us at my firm have canned presentations we could give, like I have one on USP 797 (a current hot topic right then)." He said "Can you do that one at 2:30 this afternoon?" I went to my room, found out I didn't have it on laptop, called the office and got my powerpoint e-mailed to me, cleaned it up and updated it to give it at 2:30.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 137: Counting the long summer days

made it through the first day of work... interesting to see the effects... skittish for the first few hours... stomach unhappy until noon... hit a stable stride from 1PM on... I still need to cut back from work... ran into a few things and issues... more talking than I'd like... still need to step back... but as the day wore on while I wasn't 100% I was certainly more confident. I'm finding myself looking at things differently with some of my normal every day anxiety restrained.

bbdl, i saw what you said. This isn't a normal "I feel bad for myself" situation but rather "something upstairs broke"... though I agree with you... would have loved to run into guys like you and your crew in college.

Doesn't surprise me, nothing worse at a conference to have empty spots where presentations are scheduled.

CID isn't a bad little airport.

If you decide to head up to the USHL (pre-season)game, I'd be interested in going. I haven't been to one yet.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 137: Counting the long summer days

Unless you post something state "no trespassing" or "no soliciting," you cannot threaten the well being of someone coming onto your property. If that were the case, someone could threaten the Girl Scouts who go around selling their cookies, or the Boy Scouts and their X-mas wreaths. There has to be a formal notice given for normal course of life. This, of course, excludes criminal acts (breaking & entering, etc) or presented with a situation of clear and present danger.

While every state is going to have different standards, this is something that's pretty standard throughout most states.
You also cannot set foot on agricultural land, even if it isn't posted, without permission. Which most people don't know or don't care about, which is very frusterating. My dad ran over a Hmong's car once, because they were driving right through the middle of the field, WHILE HE WAS PLANTING IT. Hmong dude couldn't do anything about it. Sheriff came out, talked to my dad, after he heard what happened, went over to the other guy and told him to get his car off private property within the hour.

and there are other special rules related to other land attached to agricultural land...and even more specific rules related to hunting and retrieving wounded animals.

Correct. You always have a right to retrieve a wounded animal, but in certain situations with agricultural land you have to have a game warden escort you.

Have a gift certificate...
So you're just getting the tat because you got a Gift certificate to permanently mark your body??

Anyone have any suggestions on how to get the skunk smell out of my house? I think we got it out of my dog, who got herself skunked enough to foam at the mouth. Unfortunately, it's a nice night so all the windows were open and the smell is all over the house. :(

Not what I needed tonight considering letting her out was the last thing I was going to do before going to sleep. Typically we check the yard before letting her out at night, and often take her out on the leash. Unfortunately, she bolted right past boyfriend as soon as the door was open. Boyfriend let her out, so I blame him.
I thought your yard was all fenced in so that she could run out there by herself??

Thanks for the advice. I had already Febreezed the hell out of the house.

Yeah, skunks are just no fun to deal with. they're simply the worst things to find in a live trap.
