I'll throw a kitten on the barbie for you guys in the Lower 48.

RalphPa:

The worst storms can be those types of storms. If it hovers around 32 degrees, you get that nice layer of ice before the temp drops and snow gets compacted on the ice. Roads are HORRIBLE then, and I don't care who you are, you're gonna slide a little. The non-idiot drivers will stay on the roads, while many others hit the ditch, at best.

Agreed, and we have a lot of idiot drivers. :) If it does get to 50 deg, we should be OK. In any case, I am retired now and have nothing planned that requires driving. It sounds like it could be a good day to start my taxes and find out who is late in sending me forms. :)

Totally forgot to mention this to you, Twitch. I think you'll appreciate it.

So, the offsite location to my work is in a light industrial park, where the roads aren't exactly maintained in winter. A couple storms ago, I was driving out of there, towards the main road. Doing about 15-20mph, braked to stop about 50 feet from the intersection. Ooops, slush/very icy. Not gonna stop in time. I let off the brake, and I steered towards the snowbank, clipped my right front tire on the snow, did a 180, and gently laid to rest with both my left tires snug against the snowbank about 10 feet from the intersection. All on purpose. It was beautiful. Yep, I know me my vehicle and what it can do. :D

This makes me sad that the JK's have ABS.

The 2012 Wrangler is going to have the new Pentastar V6 as well. They're claiming 280-290 HP, more torque, and better fuel economy. I'm seriously considering a trade-in. The weakest part of the JK is the engine and powertrain (it's the same weaksauce V6 that Chrysler uses in their minivans.)

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 129: Still got those Winter Blues...

Weather Channel is saying 2-4 tonight, 2-4 tomorrow, and then 10-15 tomorrow night. If I can add correctly, that puts us at 14-23". I'm guessing we get 8-12".

EDIT: And looking at the map, it's almost here.

I'm in the northern 'burbs, and I'm figuring on an inch by dawn, then maybe 6-8 on Tuesday night/Wednesday. I think the brunt of it will be towards the south, around the border.

Also, don't feed the Weather Channel hype machine. The NOAA/NWS-official Weather.gov is your friend.

Ew. Although, I don't know exactly what I have in mine, other than it's a 6-cyl ('99 4.0 Sport). It's zippy, though. Have no probs doing 75mph on the highways (where legal; honestly, I don't really speed, not worth the ticket).

That's the old inline 6. Designed by AMC back when they still controlled Jeep. It's a horse (ask BPH about his Cherokee which has one.) It's the main reason I wanted an '06 or earlier.

I beefed up the tires, so it takes an act of God to get my JK to hit 65.

And that '99 is referred to as a TJ.

Good Morning, MEUSA! :)

Good Morning to the rest of tLodge! :)

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 129: Still got those Winter Blues...

Spicy sausage, tomato, zuchini, mushrooms and a blend of three cheeses.
Sounds yummy! :)

How's the lake effect for you? I would think that's a major factor in this storm.
Based on the forecast, looks like my area's going to get the lake effect without all the snow. Forecast calls for a lot of blowing snow, but nothing more than 4" over the next couple days.

Morning, Lodge. Off to the gym, then back home to shovel.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 129: Still got those Winter Blues...

No snow yet but early dismissal in the cards for Lil. 20" seems about the consensus b/w the 3 local stations. Yay.

GOOD MORNING EVERYONE!! terrible tuesday.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 129: Still got those Winter Blues...

Good Morning, Lodge! The blizzard is coming this afternoon here in SE Wisconsin.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 129: Still got those Winter Blues...

Sweet. Just found out that because the underclass are a bunch of *ups, we get to have Friday afternoon dress uniform inspections until kingdom come. This means I won't be able to ski on Fridays until ____.

I hope the kid who made this decision slips on the ice we're about to get out of this storm and shatters a hip, because he also made the call that we cannot wear boots in our uniform, but instead wear our regular shoes with no traction. Yep, this kid's gonna be a real winner out there in the real world.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 129: Still got those Winter Blues...

Morning.

It was surprisingly chilly out this morning. Glad to be indoors, even if it is at work. High of 31 on Friday, can't wait!

I've got 33's on my '89 YJ and I have no problem getting to 80. But then, I have a better engine than the both of ya, I have the 4.2L I6. :D

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 129: Still got those Winter Blues...

just as long as all of that ice stays well south of Toledo, we'll be fine here Hammer. Not really believeing its going to be that bad, its a light snow that should be easy to plow, just drifting a lot. But thats mostly going to be more of a problem on the back roads anyways. Still, I'm bringing a bag of clothes with me tomorrow for work, just in case.
You'd better define "well south of Toledo", otherwise, eff you! :p

I'd like all snow, please. From what I've heard, we might be looking at the mix; not looking forward to ice.
I had to stop by the local supermart establishment last night to pick up my drugs and a couple of grocery type items - many of the shelves were picked clean. Crazy...

The high tomorrow is now predicted as 54 deg here in 202 land with some freezing drizzle and rain today and overnight. It looks like no snow, although there is some in the weekend forecast.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 129: Still got those Winter Blues...

Morning, Lodge. One load of laundry done, another in the dryer, been to the gym, had breakfast, spent an hour on the phone with my mom, and caught up on my favorite tv show. Trying to get some meal planning done so I can go to the store tonight...as we're expecting 25+" over the next 36-48 hours. I already called in my script, so I just need stop at the local farmers market for food, then head over to Wally-world for the script.

The BF spent some money on me yesterday. :) Bought me a space heater for the bedroom! It was getting down to low 50s (or colder) in there at night, but with the new heater, it was a toasty 63 when we went to bed. :)

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 129: Still got those Winter Blues...

So, the 4-5" we were supposed to get today has been upped to 5-10". Of course. It looks really bad out there. Wondering if they'll let us go early. Or let us come in late tomorrow, as the second storm is supposed to hit at about 5am tomorrow and that one is supposed to be worse. Car is over at the T garage. I shoud have just bought monthly parking over there given how many times it's been there.

Supposed to have a FOH meeting tonight. Waiting to see if that gets postponed.

ETA: Yup. Good thing I thought ahead and took something out for dinner!
