One comment about your list: Gluten-free is not the same sort of trend as the rest. It is around because of a greater recognition that there is a segment of the population that cannot digest wheat and wheat gluten. Not because of some diet trend. Prior to the emergence of this "trend" it was difficult to find foods that could be safely eaten as gluten often is present in foods that you wouldn't normally expect to find it. [/stepping off my soap box now]

Given that I've found out that I'm sensitive to gluten, I agree. That's also why I know what Quinoa is. I don't have a real serious case, but if I eat too much gluten, I suffer afterwards.

There are many things that make me suffer after I eat them, but I still eat them because they taste good. :p

I'm not going to try to figure out if there is actually something that I shouldn't be eating, I'll just keep eating what tastes good, and if I get the ****s for 10 minutes every once in a while, so be it.

As far as I'm concerned, cupcakes have always been excellent. I don't know what you're smoking.

and, I haven't heard of half of the crap you listed there, seriously, what the **** is quinoa?

Sweet potatos are classic american cuisine, that god**** pilgrims ate them with the injuns at the first thanksgiving!!! ;)

I'm tired of going to weddings and getting a *king cupcake. I understand why they have come about (a lot of places are charging 40 dollars or more for a "cake cutting fee") but suddenly everyone is baking cupcakes left and right. What ever happened to baking a regular *king cake?

I understand it's for dietary needs, but suddenly, everyone is claiming an aversion to wheat and the need to have restaurants bend over every step of the way. It's the new peanut allergy. And yes, I know some people are deathly allergic to peanuts, but suddenly kids can't bring PB&J to school because ONE student in the entire district is allergic. Those of us normal people are being forced to suffer because of other people's genetic anomalies. [end rant]

If I just got the ****'s for 10 minutes it'd be different. When I get an all-day, debilitating headache, I quit eating that ****. :p

Umm, I haven't seen that. If anything I want more cupcakes in my diet, I don't think I've had one in about a year. Cake on the other hand, I get a chance to have some of that regularly.

Ok, so your problem is a little worse than getting the ****s after eating Taco Bell. I don't have anything that bad. :p

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 121: How will you spend your days until the season starts?

you're telling me you'd rather have a sweet potato fry then a straight up potato fry?
Absolutely. 99% of the time.
I went to a restaurant yesterday that made wonderful sweet potato fries. Lightly salted and a cut to a good size, they actually went well with the Thai peanut dressing I had on my Ahi tuna salad I ordered.
I'm drooling. That sounds heavenly. I foresee a trip out to dinner soon to a place where I can order that (as soon as I find one around here).

Indeed. When I was interning at the gastroenterologists office earlier this year, the PA mentioned a significant increase in celiac patients and testing for celiac disease. It also comes in gradations, so while someone may not have full-blown celiac, they may benefit from a gluten-free or reduced-gluten diet.

I agree on the cupcake front. I've had them on and off for my birthday since I was 4.

Quinoa is a protein-based grain. It looks similar to types of rice, but is more protein-heavy than starch-heavy (good for people who think Atkins is the answer). It was very popular in South America (particularly in the Andes) for it's protein content and nutritional value.

Hello, Lodgers! Got some free time while the kiddos nap. Not too much going on here, have been contacted by graduate schools to say that they've received my application and if I'm granted interviews I'll start hearing as soon as about 45 days (late Oct., early Nov.). Studying for the GRE these days (taking it on the 6th or 7th of Oct) and taking an online class in Medical Terminology.

Cooking up a storm as usual since I now cook dinner for the family for which I am a nanny and share cooking duties with tcbg. We made homemade premium vanilla ice cream last night, which I sampled when it came out of the ice cream machine this morning. :o Looking forward to trying to replicate his mom's sauce this weekend (perhaps) and eating some of the 2 chilis that we made for the chili competetion we entered last weekend.

I imagine it's possibly related to the dieting/cheating trends. If someone wants a bit of a sweet/treat, they'll feel less guilty eating a cupcake than a slice of cake. The cupcake lets you eat it in its entirety (so you get the satiated feeling of eating a lot of something) without eating an entire cake.

I've only been to one wedding with cupcakes and thought it was a cute idea and suited the couple. I, however, prefer cake. I love to see the wedding cake before it's cut into. A properly executed cake can be a beautiful thing to see and eat.

That's why I quit drinking milk. I couldn't drive to the store up the street to get hamburger buns without a safety squat beforehand and a box of Immodium in the truck.

As for the steak, a little garlic salt before it goes on the grill and we're all set here.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 121: How will you spend your days until the season starts?

Morning!

The doctors tell me I am apparently healthy. In celebration I drank more than I should of for a Wednesday night. :o :D

Was the drinking a reason we now need to call the Grammar Horse on you?? ;) :p

I put ketchup on steak. Deal with it.

While I do not doubt sweet potatoes are enjoyable, to me they look visually unappealing and therefore I cannot bring myself to try them.

I am cah-razed right now. So much to do, no time to do it.

So, you don't like steak, eh?

What, they clash with your nail polish?

Haha, I like the way you think.

My doctor once suggested that I go on a gluten-free diet, but being the picky eater I am, there's not a snowball's chance in hell.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 121: How will you spend your days until the season starts?

Just ventured out to find lunch and wow Houston sucks. I drove through places that looked like it was Detroit, with whole blocks that are abandoned.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 121: How will you spend your days until the season starts?

For all of you that were involved, I just checked out data on 22 seconds of magic the extended edition and apparently, it became a big deal in bulgaria last weekend :p

Nope, I am just careless with grammar. Especially in the Lodge where I know pictures can't be posted. ;) :D

and since Cosmo/Fitness/all the stupid health magazines promote cupcakes, and since women are generally the trend setters, the cupcake explosion has happened. I mean christ, there's a food network show dedicated to cupcake cook-offs!

this. People that do cupcakes at weddings are skimping on the cake budget. Not that there's anything wrong with that...but dammit, I'm splurging on cake! And photography

Save your money on all that crap and just have a free open bar. No one cares about that other stuff! :D

We warned you. :p

Hell, Detroit even has a redeeming quality - history. Houston is a cultureless boomtown.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 121: How will you spend your days until the season starts?

Quite frankly, I feel like a wedding is about the couple being happy, not the freakin' guests. If a couple chooses to have cupcakes rather than cake, then why the hell not. Some people like cupcakes better!! I'd rather have a bit of extra money to spend on my Honeymoon than at the wedding, when guess what, it all tastes the effing same.
I've seen weddings that were a dam potluck, and guess what, the smiles on everyone's faces were just as big and genuine than at the extravagant weddings I've been to.
