Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 121: How will you spend your days until the season starts?

Sweet potatoes aren't bad. Sweet potato chips are where it's at, however.

Just played video games for class credit for 3 hours. Our renovated ship simulator (went from just 1 simulator to 2 that can work together) allows us to operate a ship and a tug and work cooperatively in an effort to dock the ship. Yep, it's pretty sweet... we were in Port Elizabeth, NJ this morning, Houston last week, who knows where next week.
I'm in Houston this week, for real, not simulator. Was the simulator accurate enough to simulate the unbearable humidity?

you're telling me you'd rather have a sweet potato fry then a straight up potato fry?
Sometimes, yes. I often order sweet potato fries instead of french fries. Especially when the regular fries are thick cut pieces of crap. Thick cut fries are horrible.

Haha, we can't physically feel the weather, unfortunately.

I agree with bbdl on the sweet potato fries.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 121: How will you spend your days until the season starts?

you probably also put ketchup on steak :p

Now you're really proving you're a moron. Who the **** would ever do that? I haven't used any commercial steak sauce in 30 years (since I stopped eating bad steaks). Some sauteed mushrooms and onions or some of the special flavored butters the good steakhouses serve, otherwise naked steaks.

I'm a moron because I figure you put ketchup on steak? You're the one that doesn't like regular potatoes and joined in the sweet potato trend! That's right, sweet potatoes are a trendy food.

Never said I didn't like regular potatoes, just that I prefer sweet potatoes. I've been eating them since I was a little kid, didn't know they were trendy. And are you telling me ketchup on steak is trendy too?

I'm getting confused. Next thing I'll hear is probably something like "salsa is good on tortilla chips" or "beer is good for you".

My dad puts ketchup on steak, and I tell him he's an idiot whenever I see him do it. :p
Of course, I'd probably put kechup on a steak too if I cooked it so long that it turns into shoe leather like he does.

I never put any sauces on steaks, but like you said, some mushrooms and onions or chunk of a special butter on top is usually excellent.

That's not butter...

Sweet potatoes: blech. Been puking them up since birth. Same goes for butternut/acorn squash. Instant reverse peristalsis.

Yes! Especially with a chipotle dipping sauce!
I went to a restaurant yesterday that made wonderful sweet potato fries. Lightly salted and a cut to a good size, they actually went well with the Thai peanut dressing I had on my Ahi tuna salad I ordered.

My dad always reaches for the A1 or ketchup, and it doesn't matter if the steak is buttered or paired with sauteed mushrooms and onions. I've told him several times to at least try the meat before drowning it, but he never listens...

I've just become a huge fan of potatoes in general. Russet, Yukon Gold, Fingerling, Reds, Butterball, Michigan Round White, you name it, I'll find a way to cook it.

Besides, other than bread, potatoes are my carb/starch of choice.

sweet potatoes have really come into fashion over the past few years. As trends come and go, food is no different. Avocado, pomegranate, Quinoa, couscous, Hummus, and blueberries are a few that come to mind. Not to mention things like gluten-free, cupcakes, and sushi.

I'm just saying that a lot of people jump on foods like they have eaten them their whole lives, when in reality, they read about them in some magazine and are now pretending they have always loved them.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 121: How will you spend your days until the season starts?

When I was a child, I always used ketchup on steak. I haven't in years.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 121: How will you spend your days until the season starts?

I'll admit I'm seeing more sweet potatoes on restaurant menus now then I used to, but I view that as a good thing, 'cause I've always liked them. My kid is 13 now and and they were the first solid (semi-solid) food he had, the wife cooked and pureed them herself. He now prefers regular fries over sweet potatoes, but only by a slim margin, we still end up fighting over the last few fries.

As far as I'm concerned, cupcakes have always been excellent. I don't know what you're smoking.

and, I haven't heard of half of the crap you listed there, seriously, what the **** is quinoa?

Sweet potatos are classic american cuisine, that god**** pilgrims ate them with the injuns at the first thanksgiving!!! ;)

One comment about your list: Gluten-free is not the same sort of trend as the rest. It is around because of a greater recognition that there is a segment of the population that cannot digest wheat and wheat gluten. Not because of some diet trend. Prior to the emergence of this "trend" it was difficult to find foods that could be safely eaten as gluten often is present in foods that you wouldn't normally expect to find it. [/stepping off my soap box now]
