Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 119: Legands of the Foopers

When I get my new Droid X, I'm planning on just having a cell phone. I'll get internet on the phone and use it as a wireless router and I have no need for a landline. I'm still undecided on TV, which will probably just be network TV for now, at the very most, basic cable channels.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 119: Legands of the Foopers

I have never texted. I finally bought a cell phone in January and had the texting ability turned off. :)

Can't understand what seems to be the obsessive clutching of the phone like it was some sort of pacifier. The other day a gaggle of college age gals walked into the restaurant we were in and they were all clutching their phones like they were ventilators or something. I wanted to jam the signal just to see what would happen. Someone should really market a toy for that....:D

We are another family that uses cell phones just as you do. We feel like dinosaurs but it works for us.:)

I always love it when I'm meeting someone for the first time (new co-worker, fellow grad student, etc.) and they presume they can just text me meeting times, availability, rescheduling requests, etc. Then I have to explain why I don't have the latest iPhone and a texting plan, and why my cell phone is currently out in my car and not in my briefcase, and that I'm not some sort of communist. :p

The way I look at is, if you have a job/career at a company where it is normal to communicate to the group via text or other smartphone means, and you don't hook yourself into that, you are automatically putting yourself at a disadvantage, whether you like it or not.

Oh I agree, eventually my hand will be forced. I'm not doing it to be elitist, I'm doing it because I don't have to do it yet - I work for a very small company.

Then the company should provide the means of accessing such information via text or smartphone means by providing a smartphone with those capabilities. :D

Sweet, just got an email from school that "due to budgetary concerns and other BS, we have to cut your RA Stipend of a reduced $500 from last year's $750. The good news is you still get a free room!" in about as many words.

I guess the contract I signed for a $500 stipend and everything last april holds no water, and of course if I raise an issue about that I'll get shown the door. Thank god I'm done with this school in 9 months.

In fact, I often swear that I must come from the only family who uses cell phones almost exclusively for outgoing calls, and keeps them turned off most of the time.
Ok... but do they still write checks? :D

Mrs. g and I are looking at all of the technology in our lives and debating what we "need" to have versus what is "nice" to have.
I can think of one thing Mrs. g should add to her list! :p

This is me too. I avoid talking on the phone to people unless they are close friends and family, I don't have a problem with talking in person, but there is something about being on the phone that freezes me. (this has lead to more than 1 disasterous phone interviews)

I find texting to be very handy when I'm having a casual conversation with a friend, while we're both at work, and can't really talk, but texting works. If I get busy with something I can just ignore the texts for a while, and its no big deal. It also gives me time to think out what I'm going to say before I make an *** out of myself, which I don't get to do on the phone. :p
This is true. Plus I have a good friend with hearing issues. It's easier for short conversations to do them by text and save longer stuff for email or when we see each other in person.

I don't use my cell phone for anything work related, except the rare phone call when I am not home. (my office is in my home).

Having a long career in medicine I was always on call 24/7. Had car phones before the discovery of the cell phone. Now I have the luxury of finally not being at anyone's beck and call most of the time so I find the need to be tied to a cell phone less than most. We do carry them with us if we need to contact someone but basically they are off most of the time. But we are in a very special situation-we do not need to be in constant touch with anyone.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 119: Legands of the Foopers

It's a shame that some cell phone company hasn't realized that they'd make a killing being just a "Data" provider (ie: like DSL/Cable Internet) and route voice calls as data.

But they're complacent in charging for "minutes of use," "texts (which actually reside as extra data sent with phone calls)," and "Data," when all three are the same thing.
I have Boost Mobile - $50/month for unlimited voice, texts and data. No contracts. I have a Motorola i1, Droid phone. Boost is owned and operated by Sprint, which has a similar plan, with a contract in order to get the phone purchase price reduced, for $70/month.

:(

And the procedure I had today still didn't work, but they wanted me to reschedule anyway. I'll reschedule the day after the Lions win the Super Bowl...
