Dunno if it's hard-wired or if it uses a battery (mine's hard-wired), but if it's the latter, just take the battery out when cooking. :)

hardwired... and I never worked with this smoke detector in the ceiling... same company I used to work for (SimplexGrinnell).

edit: maybe there's more than one device... but I think I'm wrong... I know this building is wired by Simplex... I don't think I've seen this one... maybe Thorn (UK) still operates... looks like a love-child of the Simplex device and the CO2/smoke detector from the Brits.

Yes... it is geekery... but its my only non-computer non-(strictly)-math job ever.

Yeah, you're kinda *ed, then. I literally thought about just cutting my wires, but figured that be really stupid, not to mention illegal.

Dry ice is easy to get, and since it sublimates, you don't have to worry about it dripping on anything while it's taped to the heat/smoke detector.

Another option is to just tape one of those freezer packs to it when you want to bake something.

Baking. Yeah, okay.

The times I'd want to bake something are less than the times I'd not want to bake something, so I'll stick to stovetop and microwave. And soon to be crockpot and maybe a Foreman.

Ya gotta give me credit for a while ago when I asked if I could refer to RalphPa as the Bear Jew: (not a real spoiler to the movie, btw):

One survivor of an attack by the 'Basterds', Private Butz (Sönke Möhring), is interviewed by Adolf Hitler (Martin Wuttke). Butz's account of the attack is shown in flashback: his squad was ambushed and his Sergeant was beaten to death with a baseball bat by Sgt. Donny Donowitz (Eli Roth), known by the Germans as "The Bear Jew". Butz then reveals that Raine (Brad Pitt) carved a swastika into his forehead with a knife.

The nickname works on a couple levels. :D

I haven't seen that movie, and I won't see it 'til it appears on the premium tier in a couple years.

I don't get HBO/Cinemax/Showtime; I'm talking about the Encore/Movie Channel/HDnet movies level.

Yeah, that's gonna be quite a while.

Frankly, it's worth renting. I don't say that often about movies.

Renting costs money. You know how I feel about spending money on non-essentials. :p
