'Morning, Lodge.

Sorry to hear about your friend, gmann. :(

In other news, I'm making good, old fashioned chocolate chip cookies today. :)

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 117: It's The Dog Days of Summer

I have had friends pass with cancer in the past and even though it is a terrible thing all those people who lost the battle had it really really bad and all involved knew that the end was near so family and friends had time to prepare. The tough part about this death is that he was actually beating this thing and even the doctors gave him good odds that he would be a survivor. However, with no notice the cancer literally exploded in him and within 15 hours he was gone.

not trying to get graphic on people... but what does that mean "exploded"... like the cancer burst? or it just decided its time for a cell-dividing party?

I don't usually give condolences because to me they're implied for bad situations so I apologize if i sound tone deaf. Sorry to see that happen.

No problem.

Thursday morning he actually checked out of Mayo because things were looking really good. The cancer was limited to an area around one of his hips. He was still experiencing some pain so the plan was to leave Mayo and check into a local nursing home (to manage the paid meds and begin some PT) and then go home within a week or so and then go back to Mayo to finish up his treatment (RICE).

I visited with him soon after he arrived at the nursing home. I left my visit around 6 PM Thursday feeling pretty good about things.

Later that evening the cancer rapidly spread to his internal organs and perforated his bowels which caused an infection. He was airlifted to Mayo and by the time he arrived there was nothing that they could do to assist him. He passed away yesterday around 1 PM.

Did it burst or was it a cell dividing party? I have no clue. Maybe some of the medical folks around here can add some to the discussion.

I'm just surprised that can happen... then again "cancer" isn't any one particular thing but like a class of things, right? Makes me thankful that my parents situations have been fairly "easy".

S'upp y'all.

Final round of club championship today (A flight). I shot 78 for a three round total of 238. Finished 2nd by a shot.

Now I get to relive every missed putt over 54 holes for a couple days.. :(

Did I ever give you the caricature poster from the banquet? I gave 'ewe hers last week. I still have two of them. I'm not sure why. You did get the poster that they gave away at the arena, right? The one no one got because people took 10 at a time or what not? I have an extra one of those in case you need/want it. Was doing a little cleaning today and want to get rid of what I don't need. Let me know. Maybe we can meet downtown for the handoff (if necessary). :)

I am no expert on the matter but that is what I was told regarding what had transpired. I will be spending some time with the family this evening so maybe some additional information/clarification will be provided.

Don't ask anything on my account... I'm just some guy on the internet... hope all that can go well does.

I should clarify - I am sure that during the course of conversation more details will be provided.

gmann, so sorry to hear about your friend. :(

Went to Flugtag today with two peewees (one forward one goalie). It was pretty amazing. Enormous *ing crowd  . Both sides of the river were packed, lots of boats on the river. Announcer said it was the biggest crowd he had sen at one. Competitor 10 of 32(?) set a world record of 207' besting previous of 195'(?)! It actually flew versus simply falling off the launch ramp as most did. Left early to avoid the crush getting out. Also my 2 hockey players had been up until at least 2 AM playing Call of Duty on Wii.

I did not see MNS, BBDL or Brent there. Not surprising given crowd size.

That's because I wasn't there. :p

Two possibilities I can think of:
1) It got into his lymph nodes and spread via the lymphatic system to the rest of his body, at which point the cancer cells began rapidly dividing and taking over multiple areas at once.
2) It got into his bloodstream and spread that way.

Patman - cancer is just a term used to describe any disease state where a cell doesn't stop dividing. If left untreated, the cancerous cells will continue dividing and taking over an area (or areas) of the body, hogging nutrients that would otherwise serve healthy cells (and thus killing them). Initial symptoms depend on where it is - but nonspecific things like persistent fatigue and loss of appetite are common.

ok... that definition is what I suspected was the case. thanks.

Those would be my best guesses as well about it as well. :(

evening lodge, feeling kinda weird from having my neck all worked on today in class. Its not everyday somebody shifts your windpipe over to the side to work on the deep muscles on the front of the neck. That and i think my partner over worked one of my scalenes as well. think its going to be an early night for me if it would just cool off a bit. class again tomorrow.

Cancer is a weird and devastating curse. I don't claim to be an expert, but I know that certain forms of cancer can be a "galloping" disease (meaning it spreads/grows quickly), especially in younger people. When that happens, there is often very little warning until it's too late.

Sorry to hear it gmann. :(

Hello

Rainy and chilly this morning

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 117: It's The Dog Days of Summer

Good morning, Lodge. Baked some flatbread this morning; might as well make some muffins while I'm thinking of it...
