Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 117: It's The Dog Days of Summer

Morning!

Today should be the best day of the week for Scarlet, as it is the farthest she can get from a Tuesday. :)

Oh and do you realize its already almost August?

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 117: It's The Dog Days of Summer

Morning Lodge

Are those ****ting menaces the same birds that people hunt, or do the hunters go after a different type of goose? If it's the same bird, I just say make goose hunting legal all year.

**raises hand**

My buddies and I hunt them like crazy. They're actually good eating, and if you have too many for the freezer they make excellent jerky. We prefer hunting them over most ducks because it's usually done from land (not sitting in a friggin duck boat) and it's exciting as all get out when you get a flock to come in on your decoys. They're also a nice big target. Labor Day weekend is the opener of the "early season" when we can shoot five a day per hunter. :) After that first week it's two a day depending on which part of the state you hunt, some areas are only one a day.

Canada geese are 1000 times worse. F-ck those things.

geese are the worst. I mean, christ, they brought down an Airbus into the Hudson! And people have the nerve to say that these *kers don't deserve to be killed?

That seagull cranking off the airplane was just a small thud, like someone threw a baseball off the airplane. Passengers heard it though.

Hola Lodgerinos

agreed. They **** all over the golf course, then they get ****ed when you get close to them to play your shot. I've hit one with a golf ball before, it was awesome. Obviously not on purpose, I'm not nearly that accurate.

yep, same thing. Want to go hunting next fall? We can have a USCHO goose killing outing. :D

How did you end up going to Manhattan? (Assuming that you did.)

What the others said, but the geese that hang out in Rochester you probably don't want, as I'm guessing they've been urbanized enough to not taste that good.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 117: It's The Dog Days of Summer

I don't think I'd attend the USCHO goose hunting outing based on the fact that I don't want to be anywhere you loonies while you're in possession of a gun!

Checking in from class (we get a 15 minute break during the 3 hour lecture). Got 4 hours of sleep last night and my first cup of coffee in weeks. To say I'm feeling a little off would be an.understatement. :o

They're as good as any other goose, taste wise, and probably better. Geese sit on and near water all night and during the mid day, leaving the water to feed in the morning and evening. Despite the stuff people throw them in parks, they typically still head out to grassy/meadowy areas before the crops are harvested to eat. Once harvesting begins they're on those fields right away. Geese in the Dakotas and central Canadian provinces are mostly wheat eaters, while geese around Rochester and the central US are corn eaters. When we goose hunt, we try to arrive a day before so we can scout the fields the geese are using to feed, then contact the land owner for permission. It's VERY rare to find a land owner who won't let you out in their fields when you tell them you're looking to bag some geese. Someone who would never let you on for deer or pheasants is actually pretty anxious to get you out there to take ducks and geese, and usually will give you names and numbers of adjoining landowners or someone who's having a lot of trouble in the area. They hate them, and are pretty appreciative of those of us who take as many as we legally can.
One of the best spots we've shot from happened to be a chisel plowed corn field that was smack dab between the Wheaton, MN airport and the municipal golf course. That rough plowing right after harvest gives a lot of texture to the field and there's left over stalks and cobs to make excellent blinds and enough scattered corn kernels to attract sometimes thousands of birds.
When you have several hundred geese coming down on top of you it's pretty hard to miss. The thing to keep in mind is not letting a 10-20 lb. bird fall on top of you when they're hit.

I'd want Gonzo on my side.

Nope, same bird. Thing is, goose meat is very dry and chewy. I'd rather spend my time hunting tastier game.

Just make sure you're armed yourself!

I'd have to go buy a bird barrel for the Weatherby before I went goose hunting, since I bought it as a slug gun, so I only have the rifled slug barrel for it. I could put the bird barrel on my .20 gauge, but I don't want to take a .20 gauge goose hunting.
Like cows! :D
seconded.

As long as the only thing I have to do is aim a gun at the stupid things and fire repeatedly, I'm all for it. I don't care so much about bagging/eating the ****ing things - but I'm all in favor of killing them. It's been a long time since I've hunted, though - at least 15 years (went a few times as a teen for grouse - managed to have the wonderful record of killing just one on something like five trips).

What type of firepower do you use to bring down a *'ing goose? I remember using a .410 for grouse.

Good morning! Quick stop, I have to head to the DMV this morning.

Yes, I am very aware that it is almost August. For that matter, I also know that September is less than 7 weeks away.

This.

Fortunately Canadian Geese are the one thing I haven't seen since moving home. I hope it stays that way! They are a big problem on the lake where I lived in NC. We'd have to rake my buddy's yard before we could play volleyball to get the poop out of the grass.

What Model Weatherby? I have the Weatherby Orion (field grade) O/U I use for pheasants. Love that gun.
I use a Benelli Super Black Eagle II for my waterfowling.

3" or 3 1/2" steel shot magnums. They kick like a mule and you know you've been shooting them when the day is done.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 117: It's The Dog Days of Summer

I hate those mother effin geese so I'm all for a USCHO Goose Hunt. I'll bring the snacks. There were a bunch in Belmont, MA (town next to mine) that **** all over the football field and the bleachers. Whatever is in their **** was acidic enough or something to eat through the wooden bleachers. One group in the town wanted to get rid of the geese, then some animal lovers complained. What the town should have done at that point was bill the animal lovers for the cost to repair the bleachers. Seriously, the bleachers were a hazard and could have resulted in damaging accidents, but get rid of these ridiculous birds?? Oh no, can't have that.
