Since sirens are used for a different purpose here around DC (incoming Russian ICBMs, bad crab harvest, MD-Duke riots in College Park) we Marylanders usually look outside for the weather. Plus there's always "HAL" on the National Weather Service on Marine band radio whenever I'm out in the bay.
You think we're kidding, but when the sirens hit, the majority take it as a cue to go outside, rather than take shelter, just so they can see the storm.
