Re: Rep Lodge Thread 89: As The Holidays Approach
gmann, I held Air Force Academy season football tickets for thirty years until choosing not to renew them earlier this decade. I see BSU and the Falcons' football program occupying similar positions.
In the time I held AFA tickets the Falcons played as a member of the 8-team WAC, then an expanded configuration of the 16-team WAC and now as a member of the Mountain West Conference.
BYU, Utah and TCU have each made concerted runs at busting the BCS bowl picture in the last five seasons or so. TCU is doing so again this season. About once every ten years Air Force has enough elite cadet/student/athletes on its roster to compete with the top three teams in the MWC. I've also been in Falcon Stadium and Notre Dame stadium to witness, first hand, victories by AFA over the Fighting Irish.
I expect BSU will be the same kind of outfit when it plays in the WCHA. No, on an annual basis the Beavers won't challenge North Dakota, Wisconsin and Denver [or whomever it may be at the top of the heap] to win a league title. However, in those years when BSU has a top flight scorer or two and a hot goalie I expect the Beavers will make a strong run at being able to crack the top three in the league standings. Being in the top three is beneficial in that it means having to play only two games in the Final Five conference post-season tourney. I for one am looking forward to BSU's [and Neb-O's] inclusion in the WCHA.
I don't get involved and I don't post in those threads for a reason. I find it humorous that living in a basement and owning a compter with dial up equates to being a college hockey know it all.
BSU doesn't get much repsect and IMHO that is justified. Taking this series will help in gaining a little more respect to the program.
BSU will never be a top team year in and year out in the WCHA but rest assured they won't be a bottom team either. I predict that over the long term BSU will spend more time in the top half of the WCHA versus the bottom. I am willing to bet a substantial amount of cash on that. Unlike other programs, BSU has a tradition of winning and wanting to win and most importantly actually winning is in our DNA. We have done it at every level and stepping into the WCHA won't change that.
BSU has a good chance to make a statement this weekend. Even though BSU has had a fairly easy schedule to date even a down gopher team should be a good test. Even though mn has yet to find themselves and they have played poorly to date if BSU ends up poking the bear to many times they might regret it.
Even if the gophers sweep I will still be happy with a 7-2-1 record ten games into the season.
*steps off soap box*
