Raids on Collge Hockey Programs

Re: Raids on Collge Hockey Programs

I read that he'd miss the whole season, but I guess that's yet to be seen.

I'd bet the NCAA route might look more appealing to him now than it did just a few weeks ago is because he's sustained yet another injury. He's missed more time than he's played the past couple seasons, so it's not that unreasonable to forsee him not being able to be healthy enough to ever be able to play professionally or complete any significant time to accrue the CHL school funds. The NCAA route at least would have given him the education to fall back on.

He will still have his education to fall back on....as a high end player, he signed what are known as "gold packages" that guarantee his educational expenses no matter what with the exception of signing a NHL contract.

Re: Raids on Collge Hockey Programs

And Murphy likely to miss all of 2011/12 with yet another injury. bet the NCAA route looking a little better to him now.

Agreed...The gloating of the Sting in that video made me sick. I'd really like to see a journalist do an investigative report to determine if money is changing hands.

Murphy has signed with Phoenix.

Sad to say, a scholarship from Miami would not have been contractually guaranteed for four years. I hope he recovers.

Re: Raids on Collge Hockey Programs

Never say never :) Which high school if you don't mind me asking?

I went to Eden Prairie. When I played in the early 90's, we were the whipping boys for Edina, Minnetonka, and the great Bloomington Jefferson teams at the time. Actually, pretty much everyone.

The Wingers. We got our one Class A championship with Johnny Pohl.

True, but most schools would find a way to honor the scholarship if he wasn't able to play any longer. He wouldn't be a member of the teamand could not take part in official team activities (as to not count against the 18 scholarship limit) but would have some place in the AD that would come with some funding and keep him in school and learning the administrative and operational side of running a organization.

As it stands now he has his NHL signing bonus and will have the opportunity to focus on rehab and hockey without the distraction of classes and a college social life.

Cool. Love the Red wing area. The MSHSL can start by forcing the larger private schools to Class AA and maybe more schools in Class A will have a chance. There is no reason why schools like Breck and St Thomas should be playing Class A (enrollment size or not). If Holy Family Catholic can make the move up, so can these other schools.

Re: Raids on Collge Hockey Programs

Eaves was talking about the percentage of players. Many more total MJ players than NCAA, so they are saying that the number of NCAA players in the NHL, as apercentage of total NCAA players is equal or higher than the MJ

No, you are incorrect. Some of us were squabbling about this sentence: "Yet, as Eaves and his college peers are quick to point out, NHL rosters currently have the same percentage of talent from colleges, Major Junior and European leagues." Read more: http://host.madison.com/sports/coll...fa8-11e0-86b9-001cc4c002e0.html#ixzz1UqEaKuXw

In other words, Eaves was proposing that the NCAA, CHL and Europe have each developed an equal third of NHL talent. Which is untrue. Which was already been beaten to death and I carry a lot of the blame. For not letting it go.

Re: Raids on Collge Hockey Programs

Then he has no financial worries as he can easily afford his education now.

I believe many entry-level contracts don't pay you a dime until you actually reach the NHL level. Case in point, the deal that Jonas Brodin signed with the Wild.

http://www.startribune.com/sports/blogs/125454883.html

Brodin signed a three-year, $2.75 million deal, one that won’t begin until he turns pro with the Wild. In the NHL, his salary-cap hit is $1.475 million when potential bonuses are taken into account.

And the distractions in Oxford for the hockey team are numerous ;)

Wish Connor the best of luck in getting healthy - if it doesn't work out for him he has ways to go get an education and will be just fine. No use being bitter/glib about it all, if getting an education at this point in his life was that big of a priority to him, he would be showing up on campus with the rest of the Miami team next week.

I suppose so, the details of his contract with Phoenix weren't disclosed. Would he stay with his billet family in Sarnia?

Re: Raids on Collge Hockey Programs

AVFC,

I agree with just about all you wrote but have one quibble.

4. Why isn’t CIS hockey better? I honestly think it is fine. The total number of ex-CHL players playing in it, however, is comparatively low. This educational money disappears if you sign any pro contract. The kids that don’t get an NHL contract and decide to try their hands in the ECHL (or lower) can kiss this money good bye.

I agree that the CIS hockey is fine, and a great game to watch (and not just because outside of Ontario the players wear half-visors instead of full face cages). However, there is disparity because the CIS doesn't have a Div I / II / III configuration. In two CIS conferences, the AUS and Canada West, there is a strong competitive balance and the majority of the rosters are filled with CHL grads, and even former minor-pros. Not surprisingly, these two conferences are the strongest and produce the most national champions. Unfortunately, in the much larger OUA conference, which encompasses Ontario and Quebec, there are a lot of CIS teams and only a few good ones. Only the handful of top teams in the OUA have a majority of CHL grads. Also not surprisingly, the OUA teams are really challenged when they play AUS or Canada West teams (and this only happens in exhibition games or at the national championship since there is no out-of-conference play in the CIS). It's a shame, because good clubs like McGill don't consistently play enough good teams in their own division and conference to adequately prepare them for national competition, in my opinion.

If I'm not mistaken, most 1st and 2nd round NHL draft picks would have got a signing bonus of $100,000 or more, and would keep that money no matter what happened. This may be one of the reasons the NCAA gets so antsy about signed players.

$100,000 doesn't go very far these days when it comes to quality education. What do mean by NCAA gets antsy about signed players?

The Sarnia Sting are no more worthy of an investigation on how they conduct their business than many NCAA sports programs. It is what it is.

The Sting have had a tradition of losing since since the Cicarelli's brought the franchise to Sarnia in 1994. They may have made the playoffs a handful of times, advancing to the second round once thanks to Steven Stamkos. There is a new Coach & GM in town which is a big reason the pre-season hype seen the video.

I try to stay out of the internal politics of high school hockey. I don't expect Red Wing to ever win a championship again, that way it keeps my blood pressure down. That's one reason why I don't see why letting in CHL players is needed in NCAA, if player really thinks he has to be on a NHL fast track from when they are 14, let them go, they are probably head cases anyway. I enjoyed watching the Gophers when they had a lot less draft choices on the team, and if that's the future, it's OK by me.

NCAA would still be enjoyable to me even if it loses a few kids to the CHL.

My thoughts as well. I don't think this effects MN Hockey or the Gophers much either way.

Well $100K appears to a minimum signing bonus for a 1st or 2nd rounder (and would certainly cover all costs for a four year degree in Canada). I've read that some get 2 or 3 times that, which certainly would take care of a four-year degree at an American school.

Antsy? Oh, I meant the fact that there are players in the CHL with NHL signing bonuses in their bank accounts is probably one of the many reasons the NCAA uses to classify the CHL as a professional league versus Junior A leagues.
