Quinnipiac Bobcats 2022-23: The Quest Continues...

Congrats Q-Pac, I'm at a loss for words ! Rand simply outcoached Motzko, to me, he was the wildcard ! Now...We still have the Bruins !

finally got the one we needed! i have been in the building for all three national championship games, and much prefer when they win. was a great atmosphere and a game ill always remember. go bobcats!

We need to refer to this as THE GOAL. The right play executed exactly as drawn up with Quillan totally undressing Close. Keep in mind that the initial drop was won by the Gophers and ended up in the QU bench. If Quillan doesn't win that draw back to Metsa, we don't score and who knows how it would have ended up. We had all the momentum but it was sudden death overtime where anything can happen.

So happy for the team and staff, the alums and students that have supported the team, and of course myself. But most of all I'm happy for Rand. He is the father of Quinnipiac hockey as we know it and has built this team, and others before it, for this purpose.

Bobcat fans be proud of your 2023 National Champions!

The third time was the charm!

As a long time Islander fan we have our team's version of THE GOAL; Bob Nystrom's OT goal to win the Isles first cup in 1980.

43 years later, that goal and Nystrom are still celebrated in Islanders country. May this goal last as long in Bobcat lore!!

Congrats to Brave-Bobcat nation. After watching the boys get outdrawn in crowd size ten fold by Hamden High in the mid 90’s to drawing the same size crowd as the Easties, to taking over the NIP to the brand new barn to national champs. Congrats to you all, congrats to Rand, my sympathies to those who were in Pittsburgh and/or Tampa 1 but didn’t make it last night… we held down the fort and repped for you. I can’t help but missing the heck out of my grandpa, who took me to games at all four of our home rinks throughout the years and then he worked the games as an usher at the new palace when it opened. I hope you were able to see that game last night gramps, you woulda been so happy. Let’s enjoy this!!

One of the best posts ever ! And,,,what a name Dr Bobkatz !!!

I usually don't post on other teams' threads, but...congratulations...as a diehard Colgate alum and fan and an advocate for ECAC hockey the last 30 minutes of the game may be the best hockey I've ever seen from a team competing at the highest level of competition...a great team, a great coach and a great program...you deserved this and the execution was great to watch...savor the moment, a moment that will last for a long, long time...

As an unbiased RPI fan who saw a lot of them this year, I feel like they both could benefit from another year. Both really young and would need a couple AHL years if they left now. Also Arizona apparently wants to sign Lipkin already. I think he definitely needs another year. A 7th round pick being a one-and-done would be crazy

I ask as an RPI fan...Do you think Rand calls it quits? Built the program from DII to the mountain top of DI..He's been at it for 29 years.....do you think he'll decide to move on?

I agree on Graf and Quillan, but we’ll see. I was told in Tampa on Friday night that Perets would likely return, but that was from no one associated with the program directly. Lipkin was great this year but he could probably use a year or more. Clifton came back for another year after he was pursued for the NHL, that worked out for him.

BUPHD brings up a good point. But if we know Rand like we think we do, I don’t think anything is drastically different. Maybe some more talented kids take us seriously in the process but Rand isn’t going to change the criteria that’s got him here. Total buy in and a willingness to defend and eat pucks. The interesting thing nowadays is you can reload when you have people leave early through the portal. It’s easier than it was following 2016.

Glad to hear they are honoring Rand with the locker room. More to come, but he’s got another 12-15 years in the tank!!

No way. He built this from nothing. He's not giving it up. Plus, he did an interview on the Sirius hockey show this morning and said one very important thing: his family is happy with where they live. I'm sure that plays heavily in his thinking. Also, he turned down the UMass job in 2012. He's a Bobcat and will remain a Bobcat.

No way he leaves for another college job. If the NHL came calling he might be tempted. But even that feels unlikely.

What you'll find though is that Qunnipac becoming a conduit to NHL interest will generate recruiting benefits. It'll change how the coaching/planning pipleline works to get to this point but frankly, from what I saw of Rand this tourney, you're in fine hands.

Oh I'm not worried. The program has never been in a better place.

Definitely hope to keep this thread going for a few more days before an off season one can be made.

I'll bite!

Probably my last foray into college hockey until (if) I check in in October, but I'll admit to re-watching the 3rd and the OT winner again just last night.

The Q played as close to a perfect game as I've seen in a while.

I heard a bunch of Rand's interviews and I don't think he goes anywhere. He still has young kids and he is in such a good place right now. Plus I think he will get some looks from some higher end recruits now, but I still expect he gets his types of players. I remember watching the Junior National team and Rand looked uncomfortable watching Hughes and the others play more of an individual game (instead of team game).

The COVID year definitely helped get us over the top. The portal is now the key to get those missing pieces and Rand has done well there. Let's see how the next few weeks plays out but we should still have a pretty good team next year.

Agreed There has already been a bit of activity by QU in the Portal.

Looks like Mattherw Campbell will be leaving he entered the portal the other day.

Also looks like we have 3 pickups so far
Travis Treloar (Forward 1 year eligibility) from Ohio State University
Cooper Moore (Defense 1 year of eligibility and a Detroit 5th round draft pick) from University of North Dakota
Davis Pennington (defense 2 years of eligibility) from University of Nebraska-Omaha

Will be interesting how the team shapes up between now and the beginning of next season

Looks like Jake Martin, D, Fr from Wisconsin is also committed, Looks like he left UW after 11 games and went to USHL. Rink Live and Elite Prospects DB have him listed with QU for 23/24. He should have 3 years of Eligibility.

Saw this excerpt from an interview Rand did on Sunday or Monday :

There's gonna be a big party in Hamden, CT, but don't worry about Pecknold going anywhere after it's over - because he's sticking at QU. Quinnipiac Hockey is about all he knows - he spent three years as an assistant at his alma mater, Connecticut College, and that's it before taking over in Hamden - and for the near future, it's all he's looking forward to.

"I have four kids to get through college, so I have a few years left in me and I ain't going anywhere," said Pecknold, who was 27 years old when he started with Quinnipiac in 1994. "I've had opportunities, but I love it here. I brought the team all this way from bad Division Ill, and we love where we live - the grass is not always greener. I've thought about the NHL a little bit, but that's a tough life, and as much as I'd like to be at that level, my buddies who coach in the NHL have told me to stay where I am!"

Congratulations Bobcats. That was an impressive run.

My 2 favorite teams are; 1. Wisconsin Badgers. 2. Anybody who plays East Dakota.

Well done, thank you.
