Quinnipiac Bobcats 2022-23: The Quest Continues...

The Covid shutdown was definitely a huge part of why they won because it granted the extra year which enabled 5 of the guys to stay and add two transfers.

Congrats Q! Just to add to the discussion. I heard many saying while at the Frozen four that Q would move to Hockey East. I spoke to a source very close to the current AD who has said that Q would not leave the ECAC while he is in charge. As said about Rand being happy where he is, I think Q is just as happy in the ECAC.

The COVID year changed a lot, but every team had the opportunity to extend eligibility and get free transfers. Q might have navigated that better than others, and the transfers seemed to generate from what happened at other schools. It seems clear now that RPI's handling of COVID caused some transfers out (six former players appeared in the NCAAs this year), including Jake Johnson. Collin Graf said in an interview earlier this season that the uncertainty in Union's direction after Rick Bennett stepped down motivated him to enter the portal.

So, yes a factor, but Q did well over the long run to build a winning team.

I wonder how NIL money will change the college hockey landscape

I just watched Rand on Spittin Chiclets. Absolutely fantastic segment. It's worth watching.

He did say that he would want to coach in the NHL. But not as an assistant, only as a head coach. And he does not expect that to happen.

Rand being interviewed on NHL Network now just stated that Perets has signed an AHL contract. Didn't want to announce the team until it's official. Thank you to YP for being a huge part of the National Championship!!!

I have been watching hockey for 65 years.(Great Ct. high school hockey 1960-65-New Haven Blades-Eastern Hockey League-every game a bloodbath
(Slap Shot movie ha-ha)-New Haven Nighthawks- Hartford Whalers (NHL). This FF in Tampa, particularly the QU games with Michigan and Minnesota, was the most exciting sports event I have ever been at. A few previous games ( BC semi final with QU in FF 2016, UMass overtime, and OT win in MSG with Harvard), were nail biters, but the OT thriller with Minn. was the best. Rand's timing and strategy were perhaps the deciding factor in the Title game. My wife and I have been to all 3 QU FF, but were disappointed in the Title game, until now.
Today I played golf (in Fla) with Grant Standbrook (Former coach of Maine and Wisconsin). He made some very favorable comments about our team. He likes the tenacity and our ability to play with the top national teams and high end talent. He was also impressed with the OT play winner. I told him that I read (on this forum) that the winning play was practiced often and used during the season. His response was that in all of his numerous FF appearances as a coach, he would spend all night if necessary, watching films to prepare for opponents plays, and call a team meeting the next morning to prepare the team. He wondered how Minn. was not ready for this play.
Congratulations to Michigan and Minnesota on great seasons, and a great FF. We know very well the feeling of loosing the National title game.
And from the Bobcat Nation Congratulations to Rand and our Bobcat team on the National Title.
(PS- Thurs night sat next to QU 99-met for 1st time-great guy and knows QU hockey)

Jim, that was me who sat next to you in Tampa. I enjoyed our conversation, hope we can chat again at a future QU game. You could always find me at the top of Section 105 at The Bank.

You brought up the New Haven Blades and Nighthawks. Two teams near and dear to my heart. Though I never saw the Blades in person, it was the Nighthawks that made me a hockey fan. It's sad New Haven never won the Calder Cup, despite making the finals four times. The loss to Adirondack in the '89 Finals still stings to this day.

Yaniv…..thank you for all you’ve done for the program and Bobcat nation. We will all be following you in your professional career. It’s hard to see you go…..but no one deserves it more than you. You’re gonna be playing for Skyler’s dad soon!

NIL is the million dollar question. Rand said in interviews we lost a kid due to NIL. NIL is out of control in college football and getting there in basketball. Many teams are using it as a pay for play instead of how it was intended. If the NCAA can only do one thing, they need to fix NIL now otherwise this only hurts the smaller programs. College hockey needs the smaller programs because that is what makes it special.

He mentioned QU lost someone to an NIL deal last year (maybe a committed kid?) Any guesses who that was?

Some schools' alumni are creating separate organizations to assist athletes in getting deals. Here's Siena, which is in the same hoop conference as Q: https://www.timesunion.com/sports/article/siena-athletes-eager-cash-new-nil-collective-17744032.php

Creative, but obviously a lot of issues to work through. I don't think regulation of this market is likely, given the legal decisions that led to it.

I was thinking, what are our 5 greatest wins in Quinnipiac men's ice hockey program history? I came up with these 5. #1 is a no-brainer, and probably #2 and #3 as well.

1. Minnesota 2023 (National Championship Game)
2. Michigan 2023 (National Semi-Final Game)
3. Boston College 2016 (National Semi-Final Game)
4. Harvard 2016 (ECAC Championship in Lake Placid - First ever Whitelaw Cup)
5. Harvard 2005 (First ECAC Conference Game & Win - at Hartford Civic Center)

Honorable Mention Wins (in no particular order)
St. Cloud State 2016 (National Semi-Final Game)
Union 2013 (NCAA East Regional Final - Peca's Natural Hat Trick)
Cornell 2013 (ECAC Quarterfinals Game 3 - Kevin Bui's 2OT Win)
Mercyhurst 2002 (MAAC Championship Game - First NCAA Tournament berth)

Thoughts?

I think 5 gets subbed out for Cornell 2013, but Union or St Cloud in 2013 could also be 5. It's funny...before the game Sat I asked multiple people who were in school with me, at Cigar City, biggest goal in QU history? Everyone said Bui. Quillan changed that soon after. The funny thing is, in hindsight, an ECAC quarterfinal game winning goal is not that significant, but it meant everything at the time. One could also say Canisius in 2016, felt like we needed to get over that game and the nerves of being #1 (Bui goal again a massive one) and then we were skating downhill against Union and then St Cloud.

Dumais interview on the radio in Maine was a good one. He gave two nuggets that perked my ears. First, I got the sense he thinks someone else goes pro, he said something to the effect of “we got to see who else goes pro this week” when asked about the portal etc. Then he said “we need to find our next goalie” then proceeded to say they like the kid they are bringing in from the USHL. Interesting to not mention Chase Clark. Couple interesting days ahead of us. Picked up a “transfer” from Wisconsin who left school and went back to the USHL. Mike McMahon called him a perfect fit into our system.

Selfishly hoping Graf, Lipkin and Quillan all return. Think Graf is the risk more than Lipkin and Quillan.

Also as time goes on, it feels like Cooley will return to Minnesota. They are going to be the favorites next year, but we have RAND

Nothing selfish about that. I think Lipkin is the biggest risk being drafted already but feel (selfishly) they should stay. I understand the $$$ factor but if they're not NHL ready they'll languish in the AHL or ECHL. Another year would serve them all well in my opinion.

I'm not sure they will be the favorite. They lose a lot of talent. This was their year as the prohibitive favorite. Could just end up being a more balanced group of favorites considering what you guys are losing as well.
