Watching the game closely from 4-4 to 7-4, I kept asking myself, where are the Defensemen? They were getting beat, literally left, right and underneath. I do not blame Shortridge at all.

Pinching in to help a bad offense and getting caught in bad situations.

Yeah, I mean I'm getting a little tired of the 20% rule. 26 SOG should not end up as 5 GA (I know 1 was an ENG, but the point remains). Not nearly enough saves getting made, and the blame for that goes on the goalies and the defensemen who really aren't giving the netminders a chance.

I see the pressure on the defensemen and goalies as byproduct of no speed, no spacing, no consistent offense --> defensemen must come up to help on offense, end up out of position, goalies over stressed play to play, game to game - - it all breaks down to exactly what we see. saw lot of anger, post game. At some point, this team has to loosen up and play like the under dog it is, but they need to see themselves as that and I doubt Rand will allow that.

The season begins January 2nd!

I'm convinced the problems are as much mental as physical. They've been pressing and haven't been getting any breaks. Talent or not, some of these shots need to go in sooner or later. The holiday break might be just what they need.

Yes, they're a bad team right now... but I think they have enough talent to at least make a decent showing. It starts in net (I'm really surprised Rand went/stayed with Shortridge tonight) and I agree that the D is jumping up and paying for it (though they were a little better tonight).

Whatever the problem is it's time to forget the first half and regroup. All is not lost... at least not yet.

An at-large berth is totally lost at this point. There only chance to reach the NCAA's is winning the ECAC tournament. This is clearly a talent issue. When your 3rd and 4th lines aren't talented along with being pretty limited in your top 6 with maybe 2-3 top 6 guys at most you are going to struggle. It affects the defense which is being forced to pinch in more to compensate for the lack of offense the forwards are generating and it hurts the goaltending because the defense cannot always get back when they are pinching in. I am not sure they are going to fix it this year and just hope they play respectable in the second half.

Exactly my point. They can still achieve the goal. That's what they need to focus on in the 2nd half. They cannot give up simply because they're not going to get an at-large. There's still a lot to play for.

This is clearly a talent issue.

If they work hard and play with heart they can overcome the talent issue. Teams do it all the time.

This season is not over by a long shot...

Yeah sure, maybe they can surprise some teams in the regular season, but in the playoffs talent usually wins because everyone's playing hard. We should continue to work at it because what other option is there, but this team clearly isn't good enough this year.

And by the way -- that's OK. We've had such a long string of success, we were bound to have one of these at some point. A season like this isn't fatal, it's a speed bump.

This and these next few weeks are going to be used to be finding talent for next season and beyond.

If you guys want to write off the season at this point, that's your prerogative. I choose to remain optimistic because teams win with less than headline talent all the time. Heart and desire can go a long way in sports. And if anyone is suggesting that the team should just fold at this point and stop trying, well, then, you're not true fans IMHO.

I agree Seth... it's a little bump in the road, and we will overcome.

I am not giving up on this season but I know what this teams limitations are. To win championships and be a great team in hockey you need two things. Skill and will. This team may have some will but they clearly don't have the skill.

If you do not have a goalie that can steal you some games, all the skill up front and will ain't gonna get you far in the post season.

Not sure how much you can put this on Shortridge. He's been getting left out to dry by a defense that has played poorly. He shouldn't be off the hook for any means but I'd put other issues higher on the list than him.

I agree whole heatedly. I'm not giving up but given the way the guys are playing we need to be realistic. I would love nothing better than to see them turn it around in the second half and win the tournament but realistically it's not likely but not impossible. As a fan who goes to all the home games and most of the local away games (Uconn, Yale, Amherst and the games in Boston) its one thing to watch them play and say they played well but lost that I can accept, but the recent games I walk away just shaking my head. I will still show up and cheer them on and hope for the best but my expectations have gotten low. I hope they use the next half of the year to develop the underclassmen who will be the core of next years team and hope some of next years incoming freshman can elevate the team back to the heights we have seen recently.
 
We’ve been in attendance at every game thus far and hope to continue that throughout the rest of the season. I’d really like to see them use the UConn game as an exhibition game. Try some things, switch up lines per period even. Give Shortridge the start, let Petruzzelli play period 2 and the better one gets period 3. And if they both stink it up, give Mayanja a period in goal. At this point the non conference games mean nothing. But the next 4 after that, could be the season. We’ll continue to wear our Blue and Gold and continue to support them on the ice. But expectations for this season have definitely been lowered. Maybe the break will give them a reset. Anyway, Let’s Go Bobcats!
