Quinnipiac Bobcats 2015-16 - Another journey begins...

Speaking as a Yale fan (and general college hockey fan) who goes to the Bank 4- 5 times a season, including every Yale -QU game since they started playing, many Yale fans are not going anymore. Just not the game you can bring the family to. It has gotten pretty rough the past few years.

It is what it is. Q fans are hungry. Same type of behavior by our fans at PWG the other night. Game ended with Harvard s*cks chant by our student section. Plenty of BS's etc aimed at refs, Harvard bench. It's not the ballet. Like my 11 year old says to me "Nothing I haven't heard you say before..."

It's tough knowing what a great team you have the last four years & coming so close but no cigar - yet. Q has a chance - again. Thought Yale played with the same type of edge Q normally does against us. It's getting feisty.
Until we meet again...

Some of it is hunger, but most of it is stupidity. Our students have always thought of these games as a social event more than a hockey game -- let's just say beer goggles get in the way of responsible fan behavior.

The fact that this was a Saturday night game gave students ample time to get hammered before entering the bank. I'm not sure it would have been as crazy with a Friday night game with that behavior. You have to figure that a bunch of the students in line early were boozing in the cold.

That doesn't excuse the behavior. The f-bombs have no place at a hockey game at any level.

I've said for years that the real problem is there's no "leadership" in the student section. The kids for the most part don't know what to do so they just do whatever. A small group of students knowledgeable in hockey needs to lead the pack. It needs to become a tradition and the student section needs to build a tradition. Otherwise it will remain nothing more than a social event. The atmosphere is totally different when the students are engaged.

Fair enough. You guys know your situation better. Still when O go to the Whale, I bring the average age down from 60 to 59 3/4. And students don't even show up at the Bowl anymore. The kids could use to be a little more creative, a little less crude. But I really am amazed at what you guys have built at Q in such a short period of time. Tradition will build more decorum - I wonder sometimes if that's all a good thing. :-)

I seem to recall a couple of young whippersnappers who graduated around three years ago that really had that student section working as a well-oiled machine!

Then they left, and the Teletubbies came in, and its been all downhill since.

Let's be real, the Teletubbies are mutually exclusive from the student section. I love that there is that shock factor of the Teletubbies behind the goal but they also don't add or subtract from the student section. If they disappeared, I wouldn't even notice. You are talking about a student population that is heavy from NJ and Long Island where hockey is an after thought. I will take any noise. I grew up in Hamden so all we know is loud obnoxious for a student section. I particularly like the not so family friendly chants, that's my take on it. Some people don't like it but you don't become "The Big House" or "Cameron Crazies" by chanting family friendly things.

Why are we trying to be Michigan and Duke? That's the thing -- you can't TRY to be those places. You come up with your own traditions. Then people will talk about the "Bobcat Den." Stop trying so hard -- just be natural. The TD Bank Sports Center is a difficult building to play in due to the student section, but if you think you're intimidating a college hockey player by chanting "F Yale," then that's a bit silly. That's not intimidating. Intimidation is understanding the sport, understanding when to cheer, and making copious amounts of noise at the right time. Intimidation is screaming your ears off during a PK. Intimidation is calculated. Intimidation is being loud, but under control. Our student section -- and this was the case when I was a student there -- has never been under control. It's been a madhouse, and while it's great they're loud, it needs to be under control.

I'll give you an example: The cardboard pictures of Rand, Garteig, etc -- that's awesome. That's good stuff. Chanting "F Yale" -- come on, guys. Grow up.

Some of us old dinosaur's have noticed. ;) There's been a lot of small groups of students who "get it". The problem is nothing has really stuck and taken hold for the long term.

I'm not, by any means, defending the ***** Yale chants but it's something that comes with the territory. Think about how prevalent this Yale-QU match-up has become, for one there were watch parties up and down the Pacific Coast. I agree with you on the fact that there is no organization from the student section and the ones that call themselves the "Spirit Squad" go about trying to control the cheers the wrong way. They yell at people for cheer Let's Go Bobcats more than 3 times. Quinnipiac is not, and will not, be filled with hockey fans instead they will be filled with the Quinnipiac brand fans, which is why you hear the more vulgar and unnecessary chants. I hate to say this but we got to just be glad that the students are actually showing up now and not leaving before the 3rd.

The fat head thing is great and the little kid, who I think is the IceCats Coaches kid, with the pun signs are great. I really like when there are a ton of signs behind the goalie, on my TV it really adds to the fact that I am watch College Hockey. I think what needs to be down is give these students more reason to go. The T-Shirt toss is a joke and the once in a blue moon car shot is great, but what other incentive does a student who could careless about hockey have?

I love how loud the crowd was on Saturday -- love it. The building was rocking, and you're right -- the QU-Yale game is annually one of the biggest sporting events in the state of Connecticut.

And you're also right -- there are far too many non-hockey fans at the QU-Yale game. But that's not a problem for the rest of the season. So here's what I'd like the school to do. Stop doing the lottery for the QU-Yale game. Everyone -- even non-hockey fans -- want to go. But the lottery locks out kids who go to every game all year, then get unlucky and can't get a ticket for the biggest game of the year.

The more games you go to, the bigger chance you should have to grab a ticket to the QU-Yale game. The school should do something of a points system. They know who reserves a student ticket for every game, and every game is worth a certain point value. The 1,200 students with the most points at the end of the season get tickets to the QU-Yale game. That should be how it works. As far as I remember, this game almost always is played near the end of the regular season, so it should work out most years. That way, you get the actual hockey fans in the building, not just the people who are there because it's a social event.

The only issue I see with that system is that you will get those self-entitled kids who will call Mommy and Daddy to complain about how their baby isn't being treated fairly.

:DHey Q fans, the road to the national championship will go through Providence this year. I don't expect any survivors. The Friars will repeat.

Nope. No tournament games in Providence this year. You'll have to go on the road this time like everyone else! :p

I'm sure that's happening now with the current system.

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 2015-16 - Another journey begins...

All this talk about the student section is moot because they'll be starting spring break the weekend of the playoffs. For as loud as it was this past weekend, it won't be duplicated on the 11th-13th. We'll need to hope plenty of locals show up and carry the ball. The Bank can get loud even without the students, but it's just not the same.

As for this past weekend, I thought the team played as well as they have all season. I've been saying for weeks that it needed to start with Garteig and he came through big time. Made some incredible saves and stoned Yale's Hayden 4 times!

For my money, one of the best guys on the ice all weekend was Landon Smith. He may not be putting up the numbers we hoped for, but he is always near the puck and forechecks with the best of them. He plays extremely well on the defensive side as well. He thwarted at least 3 clearing attempts by Yale Saturday by digging hard in the corners and behind the net.

Shiplo is going to be a star. The kid has speed and a laser beam... plays D pretty well too.

Both games were played well and they made adjustments as the games went along to keep ahead of both Brown and Yale. Except for a few questionable penalties, it was a great effort. Hopefully the bye week lets them heal up a bit... I just hope they don't get complacent and rusty.

The 2 or 3 toe drags coming into the offensive zone were just a glimpse at what that kid is going to do for us. And then that big ole shot from the blue line was so pretty.

The QU vs Yale game at the Bank 2 years ago was played either week 1 or 2 of the ECAC season. It was the first match-up after the national championship.
