Quinnipiac Bobcats 2015-16 - Another journey begins...

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 2015-16 - Another journey begins...

Absolutely going to be a blood bath. After Yale this is a team that I feel like Quinnipiac despises. Expect the series to be physical and chippy. No love lost for Ben Syer as well.

I doubt it will be chippy. For one thing, Cornell's something like 56th in the NCAAs in PIM per game this year. But more importantly we have exactly zero interest putting Q on the power play. For their part I doubt Q wants to get bogged down in chippy play.

The first two meetings were weirdly good games, and the results were odd: we should have won the game we blew and Q should have won the game that was tied. For some reason the teams seem to match up well, as sometimes happens. Q is demonstrably the best team in the conference by far, yet we seem to do OK when it comes to actually matching line for line. We tried out a new second line for the Union series (9-15-16) and it worked well but I don't know whether Schafer will risk running out what is essentially an all-offense line against a team that can roll lines as well as anybody in the country.

We shall see.

There is a great article in the March edition of the New England Hockey Journal on Rand Pecknold if anyone wants to check it out.

Great piece. I'm also of the belief Rand is misunderstood. When I was a student reporter at QU, he was so good to me. I was learning the sport of hockey, and learned so much through my interviews with Rand. Always generous with his time.

Rand takes his job seriously. He coaches the team like a pro team but still expects his players to be great students in the classroom which they are. I have no issue with the way he coaches and think he deserves a lot more praise from around the country than what he gets. Tell me another coach in the country that can take a program where he did in D2 as a part time coaching job (teacher by day coach at night) and take this team from crappy D2 team to the number 1 team in the country in Division 1. I am not sure many coaches have the patience for that.

His consistency is what gets overlooked. This team has won 20 games in almost every year for the last 15 years. It's a remarkable stat.

#FireRand

I think the biggest knock against Rand isn't his record or accomplishments... it's his perceived attitude. Yet in the almost 10 yrs I've been following this program I have never heard of a single player bad mouthing him. Not one. That, combined with the academic record of the team, and the general success of this program under Rand, is enough for me. You don't like him? Fine, but his record speaks volumes.

hey hey, that's not what my brother's roommate's Dad who grew up with a guy whose son once visited Quinnipiac said. ;)

Great to see Toews reenter the game after what appeared to be a serious arm or hand injury. I was fearing the worst like losing Anas last year right before the national tournament.

Great game! Finish the job tomorrow.

Let's do it!

A little rusty/passing and breakouts not as sharp as they could have been, but they certainly played hard. Both of Cornell's goals were on the first shot taken on an odd-man rush; I'd like to see Garts at least get a piece of them/stop the first shot. I expect he will be sharper tomorrow.

edit: rewarched the goals - Garteig did have his eyes taken away, at least partially, on cornells second.

I saw a focused and determined team on that ice last night. They controlled the tempo of the game and imposed themselves on Cornell, minus those two lapses. I felt like the two goals came off ****ty lone changes and a ****ty breakout, other than that they looked solid. I hope they role Shiplo tonight.

They need to keep that focus. Cornell will undoubtedly adjust their game plan and I would expect them to try and be more physical. Our key is our biggest strength: speed. Those big pylons can't skate. Get around them and it's us against Gillam.

Give me an early birthday present boys!

Go Q!
