Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

Hockey East title and 2 NCAA apearances...

The 2001 Hockey East and New England coach of the year and a two-time finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award as the national coach of the year, Pooley was instrumental in the development of four All-American players during his tenure at Providence - forwards Chad Quenneville and Devin Rask, goaltender Nolan Schaefer and defenseman Stephen Wood. Six players who played for him with the Friars - Hal Gill, Joe Hulbig, Fernando Pisani, Mike Farrell, Jon DeSalvatore and Schaefer went on to play in the National Hockey League (NHL).

And all those other years in which they sucked....do you acknowledge any of those?

Or the fact that he's never been a head coach anywhere else? Do you acknowledge that? lol.

Maybe antibiotics will make the rash go away.

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

You can't quibble with the success of the Jackson-Pooley team. I would welcome them, as a team, at Providence. PP is a fabulous associate head coach in that combo. I wonder how Jackson would do on his own?

Just like some can coach college some can coach pro but few can do both

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

I'm no insider so I'm just guessing.

Oh no worries, I was just throwing it out there. Thanks for posting the article. I do wonder if he was ever on PC's radar at all if he's that close to taking the Lowell job, which seems to be the case.

An update to Ken Schott's blog contains the following quote from the AD: In a statement issued through the UMass-Lowell athletic department, school athletic director Dana Skinner said, "Rick is not a finalist, but Rick has been invited to campus and we look forward to meeting with him." Sounds kind of odd. Maybe someone jumped the gun. If he's not a finalist then why the visit?

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

I would hope that the hockey guy has made some progress in the coach hunt and if Bennett is on the radar screen he has been invited here as well, but if he is not one of the targets for PC then good luck Rick and we move on.....blindly as always

That is one of the weirder things I've read in some time.

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

If this is true and Driscoll allows a former alum in Bennett who is more than qualified for the PC job to go to Lowell, FR. Shanley should fire Driscoll. For the BBall team he made his decision fairly quickly, but hockey he has to over analyze. Driscoll do the right thing and hire Bennett today. And I agree, bring back an alum who is a college coach is the way to go.

Driscoll do the right thing and hire Bennett today.

So there's not one other candidate in the entire world you would consider other than Rick Bennett for this job?

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

Personally I don't think you can read anything into this.

First it seems part of this comes from columnist in NewYork and Lowell who threw things into a column based on what they hear. We have no such wroter here in Providence to give us any such information. The only thing to get out is that Driscoll was building a list of 10.

So that kind of indicates that Driscoll is doing this hire using the Lamoriello Cone of Silence. My guess is we have the coach by April 15. I think Lowell's time frame is later then ours. I thought somewhere in one of the links I read May. Meaning we have first shot.

Now there are different ways to look at it. We could be going the cheap route and that means we are looking even cheaper then what Bennett would cost us (If so god help the program and hello Jerry Keefe). We are in the midst of it, but we are being quiet and Bennett could be of interest to both schools. Again we have let no information out. Lastly we could be looking higher (though I think some of those names would leak out somewhere). Remember the same guy who put the link in aobut Bennett and Lowell mentioned that Leaman was on PC's radar. While I don't think we will pay Army money for a new coach, especially in light of how much is going to buyouts, and Cooley and company. Remember we get a welfare check from the Big East/CBS while Lowell does not have such a source of money only a state in budget cuts.

So my opinion is since there seems to be some stepping back this is a non story, that Bennett is on our radar and most likely our top choice I think Bennett is the benchmark against which Driscoll will compare the other choices against. I also think it will be how the fans measure how well Driscoll does with the hire. If he gets someone better no one would complain...for example land Bennett's present boss and we will say Driscoll meant when he said he was going to work to revitalize the program. Get someone we perceive as lower and we know it is the same old same old..

I think jump the gun is the answer. I believe as a state job Lowell has to post their opening for like 30 days so clearly if so they are not in interview mode yet never mind finalist picking. PC has no such restrictions.

Maybe Driscoll just can't multi task very well. 3 things on his to do list...hire a bball coach, run the Frozen Four, then hire a new coach. One thing at a time. Are you mistaking the guy for Lou Lamoriello?

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

The rumor mill often has a way of getting things almost right. Perhaps Mr. Bennett is a finalist, but a some other school.
