Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.
The Providence College Friars men’s hockey team with be playing in the 6th annual Pete Kelly Cup holiday tournament January 1st & 2nd, hosted by the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds in Fredericton. UNB lost the first edition of the Pete Kelly Cup in an overtime shootout to the Saint Mary’s Huskies on December 31, 2005, but the V-Reds have won each year since.
The tournament alternates between a four-team format and two-team two-game challenge format, which is the case this season. The Friars will be the third NCAA team invited to participate, and could potentially be the first American team to win.

Kelly coached UNB for 20 years, from 1947-48 to 1967-68 and was an avid supporter of the hockey program right up to his death. Pete Kelly played professional hockey before coming to UNB, winning two Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings in 1936 and 1937. While a student-athlete at UNB Kelly both played hockey and coached the team from 1947-1950.
UNB last won the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) national championship, the University Cup, in 2009 and will be hosting this season’s tournament March 24-27, 2011 at the on-campus Aitken University Centre. The University Cup is similar to the NCAA’s Frozen Four, but includes six teams (four conference champs, host, and rotating wildcard team).
The University of New Brunswick is the oldest English-language University in Canada and is celebrating its 225th anniversary this year. Fredericton is the capital of the province of New Brunswick, and roughly a three hour drive east of Maine's Alfond Arena in Orono.
