Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

The Providence College Friars men’s hockey team with be playing in the 6th annual Pete Kelly Cup holiday tournament January 1st & 2nd, hosted by the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds in Fredericton. UNB lost the first edition of the Pete Kelly Cup in an overtime shootout to the Saint Mary’s Huskies on December 31, 2005, but the V-Reds have won each year since.

The tournament alternates between a four-team format and two-team two-game challenge format, which is the case this season. The Friars will be the third NCAA team invited to participate, and could potentially be the first American team to win.

Pete Kelly Cup Champions:
2005-06: Saint Mary’s vs. UNB (Shootout)
2006-07: UNB vs. St. Thomas (Overtime)
2007-08: UNB vs. Union College
2008-09: UNB vs. Boston College (Shootout)
2009-10: UNB vs. Moncton

Pete Kelly was a former UNB player, and long-time hockey coach and athletic director who died in 2004. Kelly coached UNB for 20 years, from 1947-48 to 1967-68 and was an avid supporter of the hockey program right up to his death. Pete Kelly played professional hockey before coming to UNB, winning two Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings in 1936 and 1937. While a student-athlete at UNB Kelly both played hockey and coached the team from 1947-1950.

UNB last won the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) national championship, the University Cup, in 2009 and will be hosting this season’s tournament March 24-27, 2011 at the on-campus Aitken University Centre. The University Cup is similar to the NCAA’s Frozen Four, but includes six teams (four conference champs, host, and rotating wildcard team).

The University of New Brunswick is the oldest English-language University in Canada and is celebrating its 225th anniversary this year. Fredericton is the capital of the province of New Brunswick, and roughly a three hour drive east of Maine's Alfond Arena in Orono.

Someone please riddle me this..... Why is alex Velischek NOT on the roster anymore.

I take it that he has decided to take his talents elsewhere. Do we have another deserter from Timmy's Army?

This is a big story that seems to be going untold, unless I'm just not being consulted by Timmy and Bobby Driscoll on hockey matters anymore.

Unless he got injured and red-shirted

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

UNB fans are probably hoping that the Friars sneak away from the coach and have a REAL good time New Year's Eve in Fredericton, since the legal drinking age here is 19.

Where is Reggie when you need him?

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

Does anyone know what the heck happened??? Is he coming back next year? Just when things seemed to be getting a little better this year....

He's looking to transfer. He can play in the USHL and begin playing for another Division I team for second semester next year, like V Saponari is doing after leaving BU. I believe former PC goaltender Goepfert did the same before going to St. Cloud.

You'd have to admit, it'd be hard to turn Michigan down no matter how close your ties were with the PC program. I mean I'm a Notre Dame football fan. I don't even like Michigan, but if I had a chance to go to Michigan to play hockey, I wouldn't pass it up with very few exceptions.

I, too, am disappointed that the Friars program has fallen. It is mind boggling to me to see how poorly the team has played in recent years. What is really sad is how as much as some of you hate Tim Army, he is an alum. I'm sure he wants nothing but the best, but it is clear he has unable to lead the program. It would be a lot easier to dislike the coach if he was not an alum.

Seriously doubt Derek is going to go anywhere...but I'm really mad/sad that Alex left. I totally understand why he did, but I wish it didn't have to come down to him leaving.

I can only speak for myself. There are NUMEROUS reasons why I dislike Timmy and most of them cannot (read should not) be posted in a forum such as this. Just know that Timmy is all about Timmy both professionally and personally. I think that he is of weak character and his reputation with most of his former college players sucks based on the games that he's played with them during his time at PC.
AV leaving should speak volumes but it won't because nobody in power is listening and the fan base has become numb to most of the goings on of this program.
It is truly sad to see the current apathy toward a once fine program.

You'd have to guess Randy must have had a rude awakening after the storybook scenario of his son going to his alma mater to play for his former teammate...like everything we've seen it's one more sour ending to the Tim Army tenure. Which apparently is going to last well into the new millennium! Just wait until he gets another extension for making the Hockey East playoffs.

Merry Christmas everyone!
