Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

After the game Army said he was pretty happy with how they played against "a quality opponent who wouldn't look out of place in Hockey East, and you can see how UNB won a national championship." He said they didn't plan to change much before tomorrow's game against UNB, maybe a few tweaks.

That's the problem. Timmy is happy with a 3-1 loss. No other coach in HE would say that they are happy with how a team played in a regular season loss. I don't care who you are playing, if you have high expectations for your team then you can't be happy in a loss.
Is it me or has this become the PC attitude for both men's hockey and basketball? The "we are just happy to compete" syndrome.
That's not acceptable. Just my 2 cents.

1-0 Win for PC with Gates in net.....guess the two teams are very much alike.....PC did play well and are a better team than I thought.....the HE test now starts

The Friars played well. They did a real good job taking time and space away from UNB and keeping them to perimeter. And yes, they play a similar game to UNB, which shows the difference between CIS and NCAA -- UNB is one of the two best teams in the CIS and they won't see a team in their conference this season as quick on the puck as Providence. UNB averages 38 shots per game in conference play, but only managed 24 tonight. They were definitely outside their comfort zone.

UNB has more success against Hockey East and ECAC teams in the fall as they have a conditioning advantage based on starting their season sooner. This advantage has of course disappeared by Christmas.

Pete Kelly Cup All Tournament Team:
F - Kyle MacKinnon, PC
F - Nick MacNeil, UNB
F - Lachlan MacIntosh, UNB
D - Eric Baier, PC
D - Bretton Stamler, UNB
G - Justin Gates, PC

MVP - Dion Campbell, UNB

Coach Army thought Beaudry faced more difficult UNB shots yesterday, but the host committee gave the nod to Gates for the shutout.

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

Great job by Gates on recording a shut out. I can't lose sight of the fact that PC scored two goals in two games. An average of a goal a game. That won't get it done most nights in HE and PC has been hurt in the past by a lack of timely scoring. I hope that this past weekend is the exception rather than the rule.

All the best to UNB the rest of the way. They are a quality team. FF, you are a gentleman and a great represtentitive of your fan base. I wish you nothing but the best in the coming year!

The Daily Gleaner has their story on the Pete Kelly Cup posted here. The UNB version is at varsityreds.ca

Friars pick up a commit for next year - and he's a local. Noel Acciari from Johnston, RI plays for the Kent School now, but started his high school career at Bishop Hendricken. He's a forward ( 5' 11" 190) that in only 7 games this year has 14 goals. His "stock" really rose lately when he was named MVP of the Avon Old Farms Tournament a few weeks ago. After that he had UNH, Clarkson, etc, offering.

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

The real season starts this week, lets see how they play win or lose..... is this team real or have we all been wearing those rose colored glasses

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

Are any of you lesser Dominican fans coming up to the Jesuit place Friday?

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

I'm glad the game is on TV this week. It would be nice to get a win at Conte. We won twice there during the years where we actually made the playoffs. And of course we were swept by the eventual national champions in the HE QF's because it's us and our entire athletic department has been in a skid since Corey "the lunch line doesn't work for me" Wright was taking the final shot against Arizona in the Elite Eight in 1997. Sigh.

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

I'll watch on tv Friday and I'm probably going to be in Providence on Saturday. Here we go....

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

7-6-5 has got to be a pleasant surprise, but when you start crunching the numbers, the only wins they have over teams with winning records are Merrimack and Quinnipiac, and neither of them are setting the world on fire either. And yes they did tie Maine thanks to a goal that shouldn't have counted.

I hadn't looked at the HE standings for a few weeks but it is amazing how awful the bottom end of the league is...those records in the "bottom tier" are collectively some of the worst the conference has ever seen below the Friars even at the holiday break (Northeastern 3-9-4, Umass 3-9-3, UVM 3-10-4, Lowell 2-14-2).

When you consider most of PC's HE games this year have been against those teams (don't forget 2 wins over a 2-18 Alabama Huntsville team, also one of the worst in the nation), I don't know how "real" they are -- certainly the 2nd half schedule is far more difficult (11 with teams ahead of them in the standings vs. only 5 with teams below them) and they'll have to show even more than they have to have any real hopes of finishing much higher than, say, 6th or 7th.

That said, if those bottom end teams continue to struggle, and PC can scrape some points together, the Friars will be able to make a move up the ladder basically by default. It's just incredible to see 4 teams struggling so bad in this conference -- usually it's a couple, but 4? The gap between the "haves" vs. the "have nots" in this conference seems to grow wider every season.

Hopefully PC won't be joining them with the murderer's row they've got on tap for most of 2011, but would anyone be surprised if they struggle? 3 with BC, 3 with UNH, 2 with BU, even 2 with Merrimack -- none of those games is going to be easy.

The bottom of any league is going to be crap. It's not like Colgate, Michigan Tech or Bowling Green are scaring anyone right now.
It should also be noted that we played tUMD twice. And lost. But they have #1 or #2 all year.

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

Have to think a key to a good second half of the season is Bergland and Jamnick playing better and putting up some points.

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

I hope people were watching the bruins intermission, because army just was the guest.
Catherine tappen saying it was their best year since he took over made him look like a saint. When Milbury asked why army left the pro level to go back to college, the only response I could think of was "to destroy the hopes and dreams of all pc hockey fans"

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

Just caught Timmy's interview in between periods of the Bruins/Wild game.

Wow. Denial is NOT a river in Egypt. Keep it in mind coach.
As an alum, I wish he'd talk less. He does not come off as confident or bright and Milbury had a field day watching him sing the praises of a team in 6th place while their coach tries to sell them as a contender for the HE title.

The Hockey Guy would have been proud.... which is sad in it's own right.

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

The bottom of any league is going to be crap.

This conference typically not though. Usually you've got a couple of teams that struggle. But 4 with pitiful records for Hockey East is very odd to see. It's more like how the ECAC typically is.

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

The snow won't be too bad this evening.
I'm meeting my BC boyfriend (for the evening) at 6:15 and we are going to have a romantic dinner then watch the Friars crush the frauds from the Heights. BC doesn't realize that the tables are going to be turned tonight and PC starts the take over of the top spot in HE!
Don't believe me? Just listen to Timmy and you'll be convinced!

I'm so excited about tonight I just might put out for Murray! Hope to see some of you there at Conte tonight.
