Considering 100 of the electors are state are "at-large" by virtue they are appropriated via Senate seats, why shouldn't at least those be winner take all? I know it was argued that the others should be based on Congressional district, although I don't necessarily support that due to the number of people that straight-ticket vote, thereby diminishing the checks and balances between the legislative and executive branches.

If states want to do things a certain way, why not let them? State legislatures already hardly have any representation at all, especially considering the 17th amendment; this is what little they have left.

I agree that the GOP will accelerate and expand their racist and classist dirty tricks, but the only way forward there will be court action. Those sweethearts won't be happy until it becomes "one dollar, one vote." Stopping them and saving the middle class will take even longer than GWOT.

Case in point, large parts of Anchorage are heavily Democratic and it doesn't matter. Go to pop vote and suddenly it matters.

I'd change that to Pacific Coast Rs.
Seattle and Portland so determine those states that surely some Rs stay home (just as you suspect happens in CA).

It's funny how quickly it happened in OR. When I was there (97-03) it was still purple and state elections were still a near perfect balance between Portlandia leftists and Eastern OR Dildoian types. Within about 5 years the state went deep, deep blue.

I'm honestly not sure there's much future for PNW red. Even the conservatives there are socially tolerant and care about the environment. I expect the whole coast to be CA-style supermajority blue soon.

No. I know this is your schtick but Powell is in my opinion a great American tragic hero. He shows what happens when a lone good man moves among a sea of sleazebags. He was the one good apple in the barrel. Once he accepted that post, he never had a chance. He's Billy Budd.

He's also a delimiter: he is the last good Republican. With his demise of character, the line ends. It may start up again, but I can't see that happening in our lifetimes.

This election taught me, finally, that there is a broad swath of this country that if you inoculate their children they do this the second you leave the village.

I no longer expect anything but that. Going forward we will fight for those who want to save themselves. We will not fight for those who prefer to rise by harming others.

He is a good man, and there are many accounts of how Rumsfeld and Cheney marginalized him at state. When people use the term "good soldier" in a positive way, they are talking about him. He was damaged by what the Bush Triumverate did and how they used him, and he did not go into CYA mode the way most would have in that city. I may be mistaken, but I think Clinton's people held back on the "he did it too" response to the EMAILZ! hysteria out of respect for him.

Obviously if Trump's a competent President all bets are off, but who thinks that'll happen? American politics is littered with people who could campaign great and govern like sh it. Not to mention the inevitable recession that's going to come at some point in the next few years.

So, do the math. You're down 24 seats in the House. 24 Goopers sit in Hillary won districts including a whopping 7 in California alone. Hmm....why do I sense an opportunity there. You're also running to follow the failed governorships of Chris Christie, Paul LePage, Rick Snyder, Brownback, Scott, Walker, etc. Plus two states that Dems did well in this year (Nevada and New Mexico). This is where you mount your comeback. 1st mid-terms after Presidential elections are usually bad for incumbent party save for the 9/11 influenced 2002 contest.
