The democrats have complete control of the state and yet we have a third world transportation system. That was the original point.

How about telling them to raise taxes, then?

Funny that you call your system third world. Have you ever been outside of the US?

Still- tell your rep to raise taxes and just get on with the program.

Everyone thinks they are worth more..... but the fact you left some on the table just shows you got what you deserved :)

Scooby sr got his pension when he was scheduled to die at a reasonable age. If you have to pick one now, which is it?? Life or $$$$? Neither is bottomless

No. Nothing was left on the table. It was negotiated into retirement. And now retirement is being taken away. Why is that so ****ing hard for you to grasp?

Re: POTUS 45.60: He's Such A Delicate Boy and a Hysterical Man

People were made to take jobs as teachers and cops and toll takers cause Burger King paid more?!? :)

Pensions are archaic and need to be replaced with national retirement. Nobody except public hacks nowadays get pensions, cause their time has gone. Healthcare is too good (;)) and peeps live too long.

And states need to get out of the income tax game. Use property taxes and sales tax. Leave income tax to the feds (mookie’s well publicized plan!) and encourage retail spending. If it goes off as planned feds will have surpluses that can be returned to states to supplement their intake.

Thing is, the government added pensions because corporations added pensions. Which should be a safe way to put away your own retirement fund. And corporations are seeing the shift from pensions to 401k's bite them hard, with massive amounts of turnover that they have to pay a lot of money for. It would be cheaper to give out golden handcuffs than it will be to constantly retrain.

You want national retirement but not pensions... they are the same thing WRT government employees. It's money you get after you retire, based on your salary over time. Did I miss a memo?

Tax is tax- the problem with property tax is that the value can be manipulated, the problem with sales tax is that it's regressive (unless the laws are written correctly). Income tax is less likely to be manipulated, especially as people get raises without changing homes, and it's a lot easier to make sure poor people pay less tax than rich.

Tables had retirement to last X years.... so once you go X+1 it fails.

Simple math

Social security (National) paid by government, not corporations

Pull that 7% off all income and fund pensions. Business isn’t in the retirement funding business. Let them make widgets.

Yea, a contract was signed with a agreement that if you worked X years, they would continue to pay you Y salary after you were done. How is expecting that you get Y salary after retirement thinking they are worth more? A contract is a contract.

And pensions are being cut not because people are living longer, it's because of crappy mis-management of the pension funds. And the raiding of said funds for people who really don't need more money.

A deal is a deal, just deal with it.

Except that they said they were in the retirement funding businesses. That's what kept people at GM instead of moving to Ford. That's what kept people at GE instead of going to Westinghouse. It's part of the salary. And part of the contract.

Is it that hard to save money that you promised people?

If business isn't in the retirement fund business, then they should not promise what they signed in the contract. This isn't rocket science- it's just saving money, as promised.

Oh, and SS is paid by taxes. So we all pay it. Instead of the responsible business owners who keep to their contracts....

Well bankruptcy is part of the potential deal too. So deal with that :)

Stingy wheel gets the splinter:eek:

Minneapolis vs. St. Paul is nearly like this, although St. Paul isn't quite that messed up.

Need to raise more money and fix the problem areas first. The 93/128 interchange should have been fixed 25+ years ago. It doesn’t take a roads scholar to figure out what needs to be done.

How do they raise more money? Who pays? Do they have enough manpower to do all that needs to be done? If they need land to re-route, will people give it up? At what cost? Etc.

Basically, all you just said is "They need to fix it" Genius.

Sounds just like a Republican. Oh, this sucks, we have to fix it. Here's a tax cut so we can farm out roads and bridges to the private sector.

As I said previously I’d double the gas tax and increase the income tax by a percentage point. These arent easy problems to fix but they are important ones. Doing nothing isn’t a recipe for success.

How were they ****ed over on wages? Fantasy land to think one works 20yrs (Or 30 or 40) and retires at 80% or some nut of salary. That’s why fares go to cover pensions and not the tracks or trolleys or trains.

Idea made sense when people died at age 60. :p
Not so much anymore

If I work for the state for 25 years, I'll get 50% of the average of the highest 5 out of my last 7 years with the state. 30 years = 60%, 40 years = 65% (cap). And to get any of those amounts in full, I have to meet other eligibility requirements based on age and years of service before claiming retirement, or else there is a steep penalty for taking it early.

Roughly 6 percent of my gross pay, and a state match of about 9 percent, are paid to the pension to fund that.

In the mean time, my base salary is probably 20 percent below what the private sector pays (and until my last promotion, was probably 50% below the private sector). And I don't get quarterly bonuses.

In other words, **** off, and don't even think of screwing with my pension.
