POTUS 45.1 - You take the high road and I'll take the low road

Re: POTUS 45.1 - You take the high road and I'll take the low road

Wait a minute, slavery used to be legal. Preventing people of one race from marrying another used to be legal. Segregating school children by the color of their skin used to be legal. We should defend what is just, not what is legal. Sometimes there's an overlap, but sometimes there clearly is not.

Just reminding you Joe, just because it's legal doesn't mean it's right. And unless you agree with the law, I still don't understand why you continue to defend it.

Re: POTUS 45.1 - You take the high road and I'll take the low road

It's fun to get the echo chamber stirred up?

Sure, we all get our kicks from that. :) But I think there are a fair number of people who can't not support him and are too embarrassed or ashamed to admit it

Re: POTUS 45.1 - You take the high road and I'll take the low road

Step 1: Restrict immigration
Step 2: Build the wall
Step 3: Ban foreign travel for all citizens except a small list of approved countries (I hear Siberian Russia is lovely this time of year)
Step 4: Welcome to East Germany II - Electric Razor-Wire Boogaloo

;)

Re: POTUS 45.1 - You take the high road and I'll take the low road

This is how you guys are going to be citizens? You have no interest in whether the president's actions are effective, legal, or moral? Just going to play politics with it?

Fine, we won't expect any help from your side. Which is too bad, because this is likely the only time in our lives we will be called on to actually live up to American values.

And the right won't answer the bell. Because of a letter. Sad!

How loudly they yell about RIGHTS and FREEDOMS, and how quickly they are willing to turn their backs and cower when those things are actually threatened.

Makes me ashamed to be an American, kinda. I've never felt prouder to be an American than when I watched that one Chinese guy stand in front of that column of tanks, or when those crowds of Russian students surrounded wherever it was when they were standing up to protect Boris Yeltsin. That was the American tradition right there, our principles, spreading throughout the world via nothing more than our very existence and what we stood for.

This just makes me feel sad. Sad that so-called patriots will let stuff like this happen in out very own country. This is how fascism was allowed to spread and grow in Germany and Italy. From good people refusing to take a stand.

Kep - it looks like it is legal.

Constitution still trumps. If this is a religious test as Brent argues and as it appears since Christians are being fast tracked, then you still run into the establishment clause.

Re: POTUS 45.1 - You take the high road and I'll take the low road

So you're trying to say that the Constitution applies outside of the US? I can go to Saudi Arabia, where Islam is the official religion of the country, and state that because I'm an American, the Constitution takes precedence?

When it comes to our government, yes it does. It's why there are laws on how our military is to act. An American Soldier can't go to Saudi Arabia and break American laws, even if they are legal there.

And our Government can not pick and choose based on religion.

When you are overseas, you are not representing our government. You are just some person. Duh.

Exec. Director of the ACLU was on MSNBC discussing this. Mentioned that because the Executive Order allows preference to "minority religions" (i.e. Christians) it violates the Establish Clause and discriminates based on religion.

This is the America I was born and raised in, the America that shown as an example and an aspiration for states the world over. This is what we have been for over 200 years.

“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

Never mind. Forget that hippie ****

Re: POTUS 45.1 - You take the high road and I'll take the low road

Somebody explain something. Are Trump's isolationist measures part of a philosophy he displayed in the primaries, or is he just making impulsive decisions as they come to him? He continually faulted Clinton for what she didn't do in response to unrest in Africa and the middle east, but has he every said what he would have done in keeping with his isolationist bent? I'm serious about the questions--not just trying to tweak the GOPers.

Never mind.
What's heartening is all the protests already. So many of us still believe in this.
Sadly, the moronic minority who did this believe more strongly in their right to be stupid, uninformed, and the right to keep dem gunz and control women. And healthcare? Who needs that? LOSERS
Funny how republicans are attempting to trample a few amendments but god forbid anyone even want to talk about gun control...

Re: POTUS 45.1 - You take the high road and I'll take the low road

He explicitly said he was going to ban Muslims from coming into the US. The economically anxious loved that about him.

They are happy to moan and complain about rights and freedoms when those are extended to others (see the ACA and Obama's actions for immigrants), but do the exact opposite, that's ok.

The Constitution is for a select few, and lets make that as little as possible. And we can violate it if we don't like you.

Again, next time my friends complain about gun rights, I'm going to ask where they were to defend others rights, as well as the rest of the Constitution. If the Bill of Rights is that much open to interpretation, then it's pretty clear that "well regulated militia" clearly means that runs can be restricted in what is available. You can have your smooth bore muzzle loader, since that was all there was when it was written. But beyond that, extra taxes, licenses, and perhaps some outright bans.

Entanglement.
