Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

2011...Plattsburgh barely beat Morrisville on OT in playin round and then went on to win SUNYAC as well as clinch home ice for NCAA quarterfinal before losing to Norwich.

And now I will crawl back into my hole where I shall attempt to improve my knowledge of very recent history :(

It's crazy to think that if Plattsburgh lost that game, they probably don't even make the NCAA's. Instead they win the SUNY and find themselves hosting an NCAA Quarterfinal....

I think a better one would be, when is the last time Oswego played in the Play-In round unless my recent memory is now failing me too as well. I'm 95% sure while I was at Oswego we never played in the play-in round.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2011 all first round for Plattsburgh.

2000 and 2004 for Oswego

(Note it only goes up to 1999-2000 season)

Better question: When was the last time the Cardinals didn't play in the SUNYAC Championship game (series)?

Better question: When was the last time the Cardinals didn't play in the SUNYAC Championship game (series)?

Quick look at last year's media guide... the 90-91 season, when Plattsburgh was post-season ineligible. Don't want to count that? The 88-89 season, Hoar's last year at Plattsburgh. (Were they postseason ineligible that year too? They went 10-1 against SUNYAC teams, but don't seem to have played any postseason hockey, SUNYAC, ECAC-W, or NCAA.)

Their first SUNYAC Title game was in the 84-85 season. No mention of SUNYAC Playoffs before that season, so am I correct in assuming that was the first SUNYAC postseason tournament? Also, they went 10-2 in SUNYAC play in 85-86, but the regular season goes right up to the ECAC-W Playoffs, followed by NCAAs... was there no SUNYAC Championship that year? In any case, Plattsburgh appears to have made the final in every SUNYAC tournament in which it has participated, having not done so in 86, 89, and 91.

I could very easily see that happening this year.

And this is what I was thinking the whole time I was looking it up. History is history, this year is this year. It'd be nice to keep the streak going, but we can't take it for granted.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

History is very important in the scheme of things. Without it, we are doomed to repeat our mistakes. I am certain they were not eligible in '89 and '91. In '86 I am quite sure they participated and won with ease. When people say history means nothing, it's only the here and now that counts, it's ridiculous. If that's true, last week is history too!
Ask Oswego if they want to play Plattsburgh or anyone else in the SUNYAC playoffs.

Potsdam would LOVE to play in the SUNYAC playoffs.

To the first part of your question - YES (speaking for myself, not the program...but I believe they would agree)YES, Oswego wants to play Plattsburgh...(respect the game, respect the opponent). To be the best you have to beat the best... (I am running out of cliche's). Not sure I understand the context you are after with the "anyone else", but I think Joe captured it - those who are not in the playoffs would be glad to play ANYONE.....

Plattsburgh was banned from the SUNYAC playoffs in '86 for fluffy bunny violations, but made the NCAA tournament anyway. There's an NCAA minor infraction report floating around somewhere, but I can't produce it because the NCAA decided some time ago that less accessibility is the wave of the future.

Plattsburgh
That would make sense. One has about a 70% winning percentage against you all-time, has broken your heart dozen's of times and ended your season who knows how many times .....and the other has about 10 wins against you in 35 years and has never sent you home. Wise choice.

some news on Bryan Hince...

Bryan Hince is returning to the Knoxville Ice Bears in a move the team hopes will bolster its chances for a Southern Professional Hockey League title.

Hince, the Ice Bears' No. 1 goalie last season before being called up to Greenville (S.C.) of the East Coast Hockey League, agreed to contract terms with Knoxville on Wednesday.

Hince was playing for the ECHL's San Francisco Bulls, where he played two games and was 0-1. San Francisco was Hince's third stop in the ECHL along with Greenville and Idaho.

"(Hince) called me and said, 'I'm tired of the game up here, I want to come back to Knoxville and win a championship,' " Ice Bears coach Mike Craigen said. "I did everything I could to accommodate him to come back here. He told me he would be here for the rest of the year, and I think we're on the same page. I trust him and we're excited to have him back."

The Ice Bears released goalie Peter Skoggard to make room for Hince on the roster while keeping rookie Connor Toomey.

Craigen said Hince will be in the lineup for tonight's game against Huntsville at Civic Coliseum. Game time is 7:35 p.m.

"He's obviously an established goaltender," Knoxville defenseman Mark Van Vliet said. "When he was here, we went on quite a run with him. He's had the opportunity to grow as a player and goalie up at a higher league. We're just really excited to get him back."

Hince earned the Ice Bears' No. 1 job as a rookie out of SUNY Plattsburgh in 2010-11 — beating out Andrew Gallant.

Last season, Hince returned as the starter and began the season with a 16-1 record — an SPHL single-season record for goalies with at least five decisions — before being called up by Greenville on Dec. 30, 2011.

His 12 consecutive victories last season is also an SPHL record.

"It's huge," Craigen said of Hince's return. "To win a championship, you need a game-breaking goaltender like that. As hard as our goalies have been working, as hard as they've been playing, I just felt like we were missing a little of that swagger since Hincey was gone. I've never seen this team play better or more confident than we were during that run he went on early last year.

"To be honest, we've kind of had a little bit of unrest in net ever since (Hince left). To be able to add him back to the mix and put a game-breaking player in there immediately makes us a much better hockey team."

When Hince left, Jesse Kallechy took over as the No. 1 goalie. Kallechy was 6-8-2 last season before being cut when the Ice Bears signed Kyle Rank, who finished the season with a 9-4-4 record.

Toomey beat out Rank for the No. 1 job this season. Rank was 3-3 before being cut Dec. 13, when Skoggard was signed. Skoggard was 4-5-2.

Toomey, who is 14-6-1 this season, now goes from go-to goalie to backup.

"I've heard nothing but great things about (Hince) as a player," Toomey said. "He has what it takes to get to that (next) level, which he showed. It's pretty exciting to be able to play behind him and learn from him and hopefully get better as a goalie myself."

Notebook: Craigen said defenseman Brad Pawlowski probably won't play tonight, but could be in the lineup Saturday against Pensacola or Sunday at Fayetteville. … Toomey was the SPHL's Player of the Week after posting two victories. … Knoxville also re-signed Shaun Arvai and cut Zach Tatrn.

Is he saying he needs Ryan Scott? (Couldn't resist! Please don't kick me out of this thread like the Utica thread!)

Cardinals trying to catch 2nd-place Knights {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 2/8/2013}

Plattsburgh State and Geneseo both face an uphill road to first place in SUNY Athletic Conference men’s hockey, but one of them can get a firm grip on second tonight.

Both teams trail first-place Oswego in the standings and would need some help to catch the Lakers. The second-place finisher also receives a first-round bye in the SUNYAC tournament and home ice in the semifinals.

The Cardinals host Geneseo tonight and Brockport on Saturday as the regular season enters the final two weekends.

“We have the standings in the locker room and they get updated every week, so we know how big they are and we know these next four games we gotta win every one of them,” Plattsburgh forward Dillan Fox said. “So, you know, every SUNYAC game’s a big game, but now they’re getting even bigger.”

The Knights (15-6-1, 10-2-1 SUNYAC) are currently second with 21 points, and they have three games left. The Cardinals (14-6-1, 9-2-1) have 19 points with four games remaining. Oswego (22 points) also has four left.

If Plattsburgh wins tonight, it will be in great position to finish in at least second place. Likewise, if the Knights win, Plattsburgh won’t be able to catch them unless they falter in one of their final two games.

Geneseo beat Plattsburgh 3-2 in November, when Devon Rice scored with 57 seconds left.

The 14th-ranked Knights have won seven of their last eight, with the only loss during that stretch coming against Oswego. Their only other defeat in the second semester was to Adrian, which is currently ranked seventh.

Zachary Vit leads the team in scoring with six goals and 16 assists. Jack Caradonna has a 2-18-20 line. Adrian Rubeniuk and Bryan Haude have handled most of the goaltending duties this season.

“I think the jury’s still out on what Geneseo’s going to bring,” Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. “I think they’ve got a lot of numbers; they’ve got four lines that can play, so they might come at us. Or they might not.

“I do know they’re probably going to watch the tape from this past weekend. Both Fredonia and Buffalo played a lot alike, and we could see that as well.”

No. 9 Plattsburgh had been on a five-game winning streak until falling at Fredonia last Saturday. Emery said the Cardinals played well in that game except for one stretch early in the third period.

I do think we have to play with a sense of urgency and more desperate at times,” he said.

Jared Docking tops Plattsburgh’s scoring list with 22 points (nine goals, 13 assists), and Luke Baleshta is right behind him with 21, including a team-high 14 assists.

We gotta persevere,” Emery said. “I’m a big believer in the power of now. Learn from the past, but the only thing you can control is the present.”
