There are just to many Seniors on the team to be looking ahead. Whitelaw and Brown have provided great leadership this year which at times wasn't there the last couple of years.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

Going into tonight, 36 of the team's 89 goals were scored by freshman (that's now 37 of 71), and the freshmen have been credited with a combined 60 assists. The team leader in goals, and the leader in assists, are both freshman. We've gotten some solid defensive play from freshmen such as Botting and Calabrese.

Is anybody else as impressed by the freshman class this year as I am? Lots of potential - not only for this year, but also for the next 3.

Agreed, and something that I don't think is talked about too often. This freshman class is solid, but the big thing is they are getting lots of playing time now, which will make them that much better next year with all the experience under their belts. The only thing that worries me is I hope Emery and Moff can bring in a goalie either next year or the year after that is equal or better than Cadieux. That would make Plattsburgh quite dangerous in two years.

Cardinals complete weekend sweep, defeat Brockport BY RICKY ST. CLAIR {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 2/10/2013}

Plattsburgh State men’s hockey coach Bob Emery said from the outset that the toughest games to win are the ones you’re supposed to win.

The No. 9-ranked Cardinals (16-6-1, 11-2-1 SUNYAC) overcame an early one-goal deficit with three unanswered tallies in a 3-1 victory over The College at Brockport at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena Saturday night.

“I didn’t think we came out of the locker room with enough emotion (Saturday),” Emery said. “I thought the leadership should’ve been better, but I thought we played pretty good defense. Obviously, our best leader (Saturday) was our goaltender and that’s the most important position in the game. I think we rallied behind (Mathieu Cadieux), who was there equal to the task every time.”

Jesse Facchini helped the Golden Eagles (5-16-2, 4-10-1) get on the board first with just 4:06 gone in the opening period.

However, the lead was short-lived.

Kevin Emmerling found Brandon Beadow joining the rush and fed the sophomore defenseman on a one-timer in the low slot, tying the game at 1-all just 48 seconds after Facchini’s marker.

Then, Dillan Fox sent home his second goal of the weekend on a rebound chance just outside of the crease at 14:36.

“I was just kind of breaking into the zone and Nick Jensen passed it to (Jared Docking)…I just went to the net and the puck was lying there,” Fox said. “I was able to put it on net, and I just saw (the puck) lying between his legs and jammed it in there. I think we started off kind of slow, so it was a big goal to give us the lead going into the locker room.”

The Docking-Fox-Andrew Smith line finished with a combined four points on the night, while Docking and Fox each registered a plus-two rating.

That line is playing well,” Emery said. “Our biggest energy guy is on that line. Docking carries that line and (Fox) is playing well, but Docking is carrying that line.”

Neither team was able to register a marker in the second period, but Plattsburgh held the advantage in shots on goal, 16-13.

“In the second period, I thought we had a lot of good looks; a lot of great looks,” Emery said. “They had 13 shots in the second period, but I thought we did somewhat of a good job keeping them to the outside. That’s what we want to try to do — keep our opponents’ shots to the outside if we can and eliminate second shots around the front of the net.”

The game remained 2-1 until Alex Jensen buried his second goal in as many games, extending the differential to two.

Entering the weekend, Alex Jensen had gone 14 games without a goal. However, the sophomore forward ended a drought that dated back to November and now has six goals this season.

Cadieux, who finished with 24 saves on 25 shots faced, said his team’s ability to block shots in the second and third periods allowed his team to gain confidence.

“Not only are they stopping a potential scoring chance, but they’re getting some emotion to the bench and everybody on the ice,” Cadieux said. “The pucks they didn’t block, they made sure to get guys out of my way for a clear lane to see the puck.”

In other SUNYAC action, Kenny Simon’s game-winning goal at 0:40 of overtime helped Potsdam slip past Geneseo 4-3. Oswego’s Bobby Gertsakis tallied a marker with six seconds remaining in regulation, helping the Lakers to a dramatic 3-2 win over Fredonia.

Plattsburgh currently sits second in the standings, three points behind Oswego and two points above Geneseo. The Cardinals control their own fate when they host Cortland Friday and Oswego Saturday to close out the regular season,

We’ve got to be able to turn it up a little bit more,” Emery said. “We only play 25 nights a year. This is one of those teams — we don’t have a lot of high-energy guys, but we’ve got to find some more energy here in the next few weeks. The season has come down to seven days, so we have to find the energy.”

Oswego is clearly more talented than the rest of the pack. It's that "dry throat "thing that gets them at times.
. I disagree that Oswego is "clearly more talented than the rest of the pack". In fact, after Oswego's top line, they are a very ordinary team and not as deep as Plattsburgh or Geneseo up front. I also feel their defensemen are average at best and prone to mucho turnovers. They have squeaked out a lot of games that could've gone the other way this year but that is to their credit. The goaltending is also no better than 3rd or 4th in the conference.

Going forward, Oswego's senior class has not produced the ultimate prize yet and anything less would have to be characterized as a disappointment. I would've marked them down for one or two when they all arrived on campus in 2009

It's too bad the upcoming Platty game isn't going to mean a whole lot. I'm feeling confident the Cardinals can beat them at the CC assuming they both get there.

I don't know what team you've been watching, but it doesn't sound like you've been watching Oswego. Just the three forwards on Oswego's first line have combined for 93 points this season. And that's with Whitelaw missing about 10 games due to injury. Platty's 3 best scorers have only combined for 69 points (and I don't even think they're on the same line). Oswego's SECOND forward line has combined for 75 points which is STILL better than Platty's 3 best scorers. If you only count SUNYAC games, Oswego has the 4 best scorers in the SUNYAC (which come from two different lines), while Platty's best scorer comes in 9th.

And to say that the goaltending is 3rd or 4th in the conference is a joke. While it's true that Cadieux has a better GAA and save % in the SUNYAC, Andrew Hare commands second place in both categories. Not to mention that Hare has pulled off 5 shutouts this year, 3 in the SUNYAC while Chewy has managed 2 total. Keep in mind that just last year Hare shutout Plattsburgh. And don't hate on Oswego's defensemen either. They have 3 of the 5 highest scoring defensemen in the SUNYAC. Plattsburgh's best scoring defenseman is two points behind Oswego's third best.

Every once in awhile Oswego chokes up and has a bad game. That's happened a few times this year, that's true. But do not underestimate Oswego. That would be a serious mistake.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

Oswego's Senior Class (through past wknd) 93-15-2 overall (6-2-1 vs Platty) and 4-3 in NCAA tournament. Platty is 74-25-10 overall during same period... Yes - we have high expectations for them and they for themselves and there will be sadness if they are unable to win the last game of the season - but if they fall short, it would be hard to characterize this class and this team as a disappointment, especially when compared to their peers...IMHO

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

Will there be live video of the Plattsburgh-Oswego game available on the internet this Saturday? And if so, what quality is it?

there should be video. some people complain about the quality of the video, but it's hard to complain when it's free video...

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

I thought I would get more of a response to my post about Oswego being a "one-line team" with "average defensemen" and the "3rd or 4th best goalie in the conference". I'll try again later in the week.
