Plattsburgh State handed Buffalo State its first loss on home ice since Oct. 26.
Jared Docking, Andrew Smith and Dillan Fox, who skate on the same line, provided all of the Cardinals’ goals in a 3-2 win Friday in SUNY Athletic Conference men’s hockey.
“I thought the game wasn’t a 3-2 game. I thought we played really, really well,” Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. “We did a great job keeping pucks down low and a great job cycling all night long.”
No. 9 Plattsburgh (14-5-1, 9-1-1 SUNYAC) visits Fredonia tonight.
The Bengals were 5-1-2 at the Buffalo State Sports Arena going into Friday’s game.
Smith gave the Cardinals a lead 10:25 into the first period, but it didn’t last long. Buffalo State’s Mac Balson tied it less than two minutes later. Then Docking tallied a power-play goal at 14:20 to put Plattsburgh back in front.
Fox made it 3-1 in the middle of the second period. The freshman forward also had an assist in the game, giving him four points over the last two contests.
The Cardinals kept the two-goal cushion until the 14:37 mark of the third, when Shane Avery notched an unassisted goal.
“It came off a turnover, but I thought the goalie had it tied up. It was a controversial goal,” Emery said. “But we found a way to win. Once it was 3-2, we played really smart with the puck and took control.”
Docking finished with three points for his fourth consecutive multi-point game. Mathieu Cadieux earned his 10th win of the season by stopping 24 shots.
Kevin Carr made 28 saves for the Bengals (9-10-2, 4-7-1).
“We only had three goals, but Carr is one of the better goalies in the league,” Emery said. “We generated a lot of offense. The only thing didn’t do well (Friday) was fill the net.”
Fredonia (6-13-2, 4-7-1) beat Potsdam 2-0 Friday.

Didn't Josh win some academic award last year or something?I know one of Coaches rules is you can't travel if you don't have at least a 2.5 GPA. not sure if that's why Josh didn't make the trip or not, but I know that is one of his rules since Nate mentioned grades.
Slightly off subject here, but this is certainly worth sharing. I thoroughly enjoy listening to him at the games. He's very good, and obviously enjoys what he does. Hope he sticks with it.

Anyone know if Fredonia carrying the game live tonight??? I have been trying but nothing on yet. Maybe later????
This is just a minor set back for Platty. You have to keep in mind that you have to go through Oswego that you have historically owned. Platty has proven far to long not to count them out until the the wistle plows!!!
Oswego 88
I think we know there is STILL a lot of season left ,Oz makes that swing next week, then up north to pot/platty anything can happen, genny is playing well and ya never know about freddy??
the "lesser" teams always scare me as I remember as a player it was hard to get up for those games, hey platty and genny were a no brainer to get jacked up for.......yes the pressure will be on as next weekend games start which is good for the rest of the season.......fun next few weeks for sure, hold onBuff State has the more complete team and should pose the biggest test next weekend. The big "?" of the weekend will be Friesen. Plattsburgh pretty much dominated the game. Came out a little flat in the third as Bob mentioned but still no major worries until "the call". Hopefully they will add it to the highlight film. For Oswegos sake hopefully a nee set of refs will help. They missed icing calls all night long, and then would give a "make up" call (to Plattsburgh, not being a homer here jist proving a point). The key with Fredonia (as always) is to score early.
A) it gets in Friesens head and
B) they can't go into their prevent defense.
I don't see Oswego having an issue with Fredonia. Not to put pressure on Oswego but right now the regular season title is pretty much theirs. Lets see how they handle the pressure...
Plattsburgh State tied Saturday’s game with one minute left in the second period but didn’t carry over any momentum into the third.
Matt Hehr scored both Fredonia goals, including the winner 8:14 into the third, as the Blue Devils beat the Cardinals 2-1 in SUNY Athletic Conference men’s hockey.
“It was a game where defense won the game,” Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. “Fredonia played with a lot of heart and guts, sacrificed a lot and was great in the paint. And the goalie played well, obviously.
“The only thing that concerns me with our team is it was 1-1 at the end of the second period, and the first 10 minutes of the third we came out with no emotion at all. That was the only part of the game we didn’t play well.”
The loss puts the Cardinals (14-6-1, 9-2-1 SUNYAC) at a disadvantage in the conference race and likely ends their chances at receiving an at-large bid to the NCAA playoffs. They have four games left and can’t catch first-place Oswego unless the Lakers give up a point to someone else and lose to the Cardinals. Emery said Plattsburgh will need to win the SUNYAC tournament to get an NCAA berth.
“This puts us really behind the eight ball in the league,” Emery said. “I think we’re done now (in terms of an at-large NCAA bid) — we have to win the league now. We were a long shot with five losses; now with six we’re done.”
Hehr gave the Blue Devils (7-13-2, 5-7-1) a lead 17 seconds into the second period, and Dillan Fox tallied his fourth goal in three games to knot it at 1-1 at 19:00. Fredonia put just four shots on goal in the period.
In the third, the Cardinals took a charging penalty at 7:44, and Hehr recorded an unassisted goal.
“I just don’t get it how we don’t come out of the locker room,” Emery said. “I think we went in at the end of the second period thinking, ‘We outshot them 11-4, now we’re good. It’s just gonna happen. We’re not gonna have to work for it.’”
Plattsburgh outshot Fredonia 36-18, and Mark Friesen turned away 35 of those shots. Mathieu Cadieux had 16 saves for the Cardinals.
Plattsburgh was held under two goals for just the second time this season. Emery said that was a combination of Friesen’s play and the Cardinals not capitalizing.
“We had some great chances where we didn’t get shots on net. We had two breakaways, and one of them we shot it out of the rink — it didn’t even hit the glass.
“We gotta find a way. Good teams find a way to win.”
The Blue Devils came into the weekend having not won in their last nine games, but they beat Potsdam Friday before defeating Plattsburgh.
One road is closed to the Plattsburgh State hockey Cardinals while the only other route to the nationals is fraught with bumps and potholes.
The Cardinals’ chances of securing an at-large berth in the NCAA Div. III field, slim at best, were dashed on Saturday with the 2-1 loss to Fredonia.
The setback left ninth-ranked Plattsburgh (14-6-1) with the most losses among the top 10 teams in the latest United States College Hockey Online poll. Furthermore, the Cardinals trail three New York teams (Oswego, Hobart and Utica) in the rankings.
Fortunately for Plattsburgh, there still remains the State University of New York Athletic Conference and SUNYAC’s automatic spot in the nationals. The Cardinals have taken that path many times, but this year, the travel looks exceedingly dangerous. The good news is Plattsburgh will close out the regular season with four home games; the bad news is the Cardinals are still looking up at Geneseo and Oswego.
Plattsburgh will host Geneseo and Brockport this weekend and Cortland and Oswego the following week.
To finish first and gain home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs, Plattsburgh (9-2-1) will have to run the table. Four victories would give the Cardinals 27 points, but still needing outside help. Oswego (11-1-0) would have to lose or tie with Buffalo State, Fredonia or Potsdam, in addition to losing to Plattsburgh. If the two tie, Plattsburgh would have the upperhand with its two victories.
Right now, however, Geneseo is Bob Emery’s biggest concern. The Ice Knights (10-2-1) have only three games left: Plattsburgh, Potsdam and Morrisville.
The Cardinals must beat the Knights on Friday to move into second, which carries a first-round bye in the SUNYAC playoffs. A loss on Friday would all but assure Plattsburgh of a third-place finish and a first-round game.
Keep in mind, too, that Plattsburgh lost in Geneseo (3-2) in November and must find a way to negate that Ice Knight advantage.
A 3-3 standoff with Cortland further underscores the fact that nothing has come easy for the Cardinals this season in SUNYAC.
Card women still No. 1
The Plattsburgh State women are still No. 1 in Div. III for the ninth week in a row, but Gustavus Adolphus cut into the Cardinals’ lead. The 3-3 tie with Utica on Saturday cost Plattsburgh two first-place votes and trimmed its poll lead to six points, from 14.
Kevin Houle’s Cardinals will close out the campaign on the road, at Potsdam (Sunday) and Neumann (Feb. 16-17).
When was the last time a Platty team had to play in the first round of the SUNYAC playoffs?
