Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

...and (if what I see on WPTZ is true), getting less and less state funding. An odd confluence if ever there was one.

True! And higher tuition rates because when NYS economy is poor, an easy solution is to raise tuition!

Plattsburgh Lands Four on All-SUNYAC Team

FREDONIA, N.Y. - The nationally-ranked Plattsburgh State men's hockey team has placed four members on the All-State University of New York Athletic Conference team, including left wing Dylan Clarke, center Eric Satim and goaltender Ryan Williams to the second unit along with honorable mention choice Mike Kavanagh. Regular-season champion Oswego State led the way with six selections. Click Here for the Complete All-SUNYAC Team

Clarke, a junior out of Belleville, Ontario, is a three-time SUNYAC All-Star. He currently leads the Cardinals with 17 assists and 24 points. He recently registered his 100th career point with an assist during a 3-2 loss Jan. 30 at Oswego, becoming the 48th Cardinal to reach the milestone.

Despite missing several games due to injury, Satim still has put up impressive numbers of 10 goals, 13 assists and 23 points in 17 contests to rank second on the team in scoring. The junior from Montreal, Quebec, was a honorable mention pick during the 2007-08 season.

A freshman from Milton, Ontario, Williams has posted a 10-1-1 record (.875, 2nd) with a 1.89 goals-against average (3rd) and .917 save percentage (4th) in 763 minutes and 48 seconds of action--ranking in the conference Top-5 for those categories. He was named the Nov. 30 SUNYAC Goalie of the Week after he made a Plattsburgh season- and career-high 35 saves to help the Cardinals salvage a 1-1 draw at then-No. 10-ranked Norwich. He was named to the all-tournament team at the PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout where Plattsburgh was the runner-up to the host Cadets.

Kavanagh, of Little Neck, has four goals and five assists for nine points in 17 games in this, his sophomore campaign. The blueliner has helped anchor a Cardinal defense that has allowed just 47 goals, which would be a school record if the season ended today. Plattsburgh is second in the SUNYAC and fifth in the NCAA Division III scoring defense at 1.88 goals per game, and the team has given up a league-low 14 goals in the first period.

Personally, I am surprised PSU has any forwards on this years All-SUNYAC team. I would have put Kudroch in before Clarke....

Cards reach SUNYAC final (Excerpt from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican article from 2/27/10)

Today's SUNYAC Championship game, as Plattsburgh State goes for the for title and NCAA tournament berth, will be broadcast live on the web at: primelink1.com. game starts at 4 p.m.

opps, wrong team...

Cardinals maintain good balance (Excerpt from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican article from 2/27/10)

The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team, despite a 17-4-4 overall record and 13-2-1 mark in the State University of New York Athletic Conference, doesn't have any players on the all-conference first team this season.

However, that typifies the Cardinals.

"We have a real balanced team in every sense of the word," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "We've had guys out of the lineup with injuries this year and others out for other reasons. And, some of our players aren't having the years they've had in the past. But we have been the epitome of a team with whoever has been in the lineup."
...
"We want to keep a good balance of skating four lines and six defensemen," Emery said. "We want to wear teams down.

"Cody Adams was our best plus-minus defenseman this season and he is out. But, this is the one of the first times this season where we have had just about the entire team ready to go. But that doesn't guarantee a win. We have a team of hard workers and if we do all the little things, big things will happen for us."
...
"Sheridan is a first team all-SUNYAC goalie and he has had a great career," Emery said. "I'm sure he would like nothing better than to end his career with a win at Plattsburgh.

"You can see in the Olympics with Ryan Miller how much a goalie has a say in the outcome. The goaltender position is so important.

"We have to play well defensively. We have to be prepared to win a 1-0 game — we need to take that kind of approach. It's always a case for us to get the puck in deep and to the net where we have to outman and outwork our opponent for rebounds."

The Cardinals have also done a good job staying out of the box and that's a key in any game.

"We need to take advantage of special teams and continue to stay out of the box," Emery said.

Too lazy to look it up but Cardinal b-ball has been good for a couple years now. Finals last year too right?

No, last year they failed to make the SUNYAC playoffs after a three peat the three years before (coinciding with the graduation of probably the best player to ever lace them up at Plattsburgh Bouncy Ball). They did make the Sweet 16 two years ago at the NCAAs.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

PSU won the SUNYAC title today I think. At least I think that's who it was on the ice celebrating during the 2nd intermission. BTW, the SUNYAC has to have the UGLIEST conference title trophy EVER. They need to come up with something better.

Cards return to SUNYAC ice final (Excerpt from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican article from 2/28/10)

For the last two decades, things have been pretty much the same this time of year in Cardinal Country.

This will be the 19th straight season the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team has reached the conference championship game, thanks to a 5-2 victory over Brockport Saturday night.

Plattsburgh hit a lull in the second period, giving up a goal by Brockport's Ryan Silveira and getting outshot 12-7.

The Cardinals had been losing the transition battle and turning the puck over in the neutral zone for much of the first half of the second period. So with the score still at 2-0, Emery called a timeout.

The break in the action did little to solve the Cardinals' problems, as Silveira found the back of the net shortly after.

"That's something we've focused on since the beginning of the season," Emery said. "I tried to correct it during the timeout, but the guys didn't listen and react. It was a waste of a timeout, I guess."

On to Oswego

Oswego flirted with disaster Saturday night against Morrisville, falling to a 3-0 deficit early in the first period.

The Lakers, however, did manage to battle back, scoring eight of the game's next 10 goals to defeat the Mustangs, 8-5.

The Cardinals' only two conference losses this season have been against Oswego — a 5-2 defeat at home and a 3-2 decision at Oswego.

"Oswego is real good in their own barn," Clarke said. "It's going to be real tough. We've got to come to play."

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

Clarke had Hat trick in last game. I think he'll be big in playoffs, no knock on anyone else but I think the right choice was made. I think the opposing coaches pick these guys, these are the guys they key on when their teams play Plattsburgh. It could be the reason that the scoring was down since guys like Clarke etc got a lot of attention while the other guys did not.;)

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

i know this has nothing to do with college hockey.. but tonight at the stafford Beekmantown High School and Plattsburgh High School squared off for the sectional championship in front of a crowd of 1,348! i cant say many D111 programs get that many people.

Plattsburgh won 2-1 in a well faught battle, and face Amherst in regionals.

I was there. The atmosphere was WAYYY louder DURING play in this game as opposed to Plattsburgh State's typical home games. Alot of student support and a terrific hockey game. Pretty cool to see 1,348 at a Section 7 Hockey Championship Game. Both crowds made more noise then those at PSU's game this past Saturday Night. =/

I've got a blog on this very topic that I am sitting on until after the season is over. The title of said blog is called: Cardinal Country Has Lost It's MoJo. It's gonna p i $ $ some folks off, but quite frankly I don't care.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

Amen. It's like a dinner theater crowd most nights. You can clap, chant and yell. You could here a pin drop most nights. I guess they need a little infusion of youth in the crowd.

When the guys came out to start the game, what 15 20 people actually stood up and cheered? The rest stayed seated...... I don't blame the fans 100% on this either. PSU can share some of the blame in regards to the atmosphere going down hill big time.

I honestly think this might be a large part of it. Cardinal Hockey hasn't been a very big draw among area high-schoolers since...well, before I was in high school, anyway. Combine that with the total lack of a perpetually younger fanbase provided by college support, and I think you'd find that the average age among Cardinal fans has advanced more markedly over the past 20 years or so than any other well-supported team in DIII.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

I am not saying one horn makes a difference but I just love it how last week in Potsdam after the goals the same fans who "disslike" the horns were all fired up going right with it...and it was louder with us 100 or so fans then half the home games....but noisemakers don't bring atmosphere to a crowd....

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

No doubt the horns help improve the atmosphere. It gets people to chant Lets Go Cards. But this problem has gone beyond the horns. Not sure even the horns could save Cardinal Country right now. Maybe Strippers? :D

Plattsburgh + Strippers = Scary.;) :p

Unless of course you're talking about a certain PSU graduate...then by all means:D

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

Kudos  & more.

While I sincerely believe much of the poor atmosphere at the Stafford is a result of Brucey's "competency", it is no doubt that the above has some impact on reducing student fan participation (also a short walk versus a hike).

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

Hmmm.... No problem getting the crowd into it here:

"Tickets for the upcoming Oswego State men's ice hockey SUNYAC championship game between the second-ranked Lakers and fourth-ranked Plattsburgh will be available for SUNY Oswego students and current season ticket holders on Monday, Mar. 1 starting at 10 a.m. at the Campus Center Box Office. The game is on Saturday, Mar. 6 beginning at 7 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear white to the championship game to show their support and create "White Out" conditions for the second time this season."

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

What I saw last night from PHS/Beekmantown students in terms of participation was phenomenal! Chants going back and forth to the opposing crowd, it was a loud enviroment and as a hockey fan I was lovin' it.

What factors have hurt Plattsburgh Hockey for crowd participation/interest?
-Loss of the Plattsburgh Air Force Base.
-Our ***** of an A.D stripping horns (noise makers) and making the place just as quiet as a funeral home during the games.
-Average age of a Plattsburgh Hockey attendee: Middle to late 40's? They are so nonchalant and have no ambition to even stand up when the team comes out on the ice or scores.
-Location of the rink. Students don't want to hike up the road in the cold North Country weather. Just a little walk and they can go watch PSU Basketball. When I was at the the basketball game against Brockport last Thursday Night there was something like 847 people. If I could take a guess...5/8th's of that place consisted of students.
-Yes, the students are to blame too. How do you have the 4th best Division III hockey team in America and most of your student population doesn't even know that? And when they do come to the game, it's going to take a brave three or four of them to get chants going (timeouts, end of close game situation).

What do I do? I'm trying for more student awarness. I spread the word and notify as many of my fellow students as possible when upcoming game dates are, times, etc. I'm pretty vocal at the hockey games. IMO, hockey is the best sport in the world and their is nothing else that could get me more excited than a Plattsburgh State hockey game. Now if we had the old Staff and packed 3,500 people for that game vs 'Wego in November would we be talking about this right now? I GIVE Oswego MAD PROPS, because the CC has taken over as the premire crowd in our SUNYAC Conference. Getting 1,700 students to your games is unheard of. I'm supportive as can be. Comments, your thoughts, suggestions?
GO CARDS!
