Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

"Buffalo State has everything to gain and nothing to lose," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "They will throw everything they've got at us and work their tails off.

"We have to stay disciplined and stay out of the box. We have to play Cardinal Hockey and get the puck to the net where good things will hopefully happen for us."

Looking forward to welcoming Buff. State to the Stafford, Remy? Any big plans for the occasion?

Cardinals turn back Buffalo State (Excerpt from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican article from 2/13/10)

There was something lacking in the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team's 4-2 victory over Buffalo State in State University of New York Athletic Conference play Friday night at the Stafford Ice Arena.

Cardinals' head coach Bob Emery had a pretty good idea what is was.

"We lacked emotion tonight," he said. "It showed on the scoreboard what players did come to play with emotion.

"We did a good job breaking the puck out of our zone and limiting their shots. We didn't play badly, but we didn't play great."

"Buffalo State did a good job slowing the game down," Emery said. "Sometimes you play down to your opponent's record, even though Buffalo State is a better team than their record would indicate."

Plattsburgh State finished with a 36-17 shot advantage, but had a rough time on the powerplay, going 0-for-5, including coming up empty on a five-minute major in the opening period. Buffalo State, meanwhile, went 2-for-5 with a man advantage.

"At times, we moved the puck well on the powerplay," said Emery. "But, at other times, we didn't play smart.

"We're not finding the back of the net enough. We're not getting the easy goals in tough places."

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

You completely missed my point. (as always)

Still saving that post where I said the Potsdam game scared me more than the Plattsburgh game a few weeks ago.

How'd that work out for ya?:D

Well, I don't think I missed the point but (as always), I continue to enjoy your sarcasm. As for the Potsdam comment,: I'm glad you looked that one up. :D I still remember the one you made about the Cards not beating Elmira at L. P. Do you??? Have fun and enjoy your team's success. This Cardinal fan has enjoyed many over the years.

Cardinals win home finale (Excerpt from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican article from 2/14/10)

Fredonia probably wishes it could have borrowed a handful of the 10 goals it scored Friday against Potsdam to use Saturday at Stafford Ice Arena.

Unfortunately for the Blue Devils, it doesn't quite work that way.

"We played with a much better attitude tonight," Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said 24 hours after what he referred to as an emotionless 4-2 victory over Buffalo State.

"It was the complete package (Saturday), minus a couple mistakes on defense."

A critical part of that complete package was Plattsburgh goaltender Josh Leis.

Leis made 21 saves and earned every one of them, including a top-notch breakaway stop in which he baited a free Fredonia forward to shoot glove-side after receiving a nice feed in the slot.

"I just tried to go down and give him the glove side," Leis said. "Show him what he has, and take it away."

Leis earned second star-of-the-game honors behind Phil Farrow, who scored the eventual game-winner at 16:57 in the first period.

"We passed the puck well and attempted a lot of shots," Emery said about the Cardinals' 43-22 shot-advantage.

Fredonia forward Jordan Oye knocked in a relatively wide-open rebound after Leis scrambled to stop a Steve Rizer shot.

"They pulled their goalie and were 6-on-4 and just crashed the net," Leis said. "It was kind of disappointing to give up the goal, but the important thing is we got the win, and it was a big win.

"We didn't play with much emotion last night, and I think tonight we took it to them."

Plattsburgh will look to redeem a disappointing 3-3 tie with Potdam earlier in the season when it travels to face the Bears for the regular-season finale next weekend.

"Hopefully we can get a little revenge after blowing a 3-goal lead in the third period last time," Leis said. "Even though it was a tie, that game felt like a loss."

Emery added that each game, including next weekend's meeting with Potsdam, is important in attaining an NCAA tournament.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

Doesn't seem to be much crowd involvement, at least from what i can hear on radio. Seems like only one or two guys make all the "noise". Are there a lot of no shows at these games?

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

Since Plattsburgh is so close to Lake Placid I wonder if anyone could provide a list of reasonable Motels for the NCAA's in March. I know list have been generated in the past and would appreciate a little info.

Good luck in the Sunyac playoffs. If Cards can get Eric Satim back they should be able to make a run deep into the playoffs.

If you are talking about motel/hotels in Plattsburgh,
most of the chains are here. Best Western, Days Inn, Microtel,Econo Lodge, Holiday Inn, Americas Best Value Inn, LaQuinta, and a brand new Hampton. The Comfort Inn is still being rebuilt after the November 2008 fire.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

Always a must see game in the northcountry! I watch alot of D1 college hockey at both SLU and Clarkson and have wondered over the years what it would be like to see Platty or Oswego play either school. Has it ever happened? Could it happen?
Both teams have D1 quality players and I think the results might shock some folks. The difference between D1 and D3 is a narrower gap than b4. Some of Platty's and Oswego's players were probably recruited D1 but for some reason, grades or $,didn't end up going. I've seen many walkon players at both schools outplay alot of scholly players.
Clarkson has played some Canadian Univ teams in the past as preseason games so why not Platty?

Take out that and Plattsburgh's record is 33-50-3.

...and there are probably others in there as well. Most, if not all of the Union games, everything against Bemidji, at least a couple of the Lowell games (and probably more; I'm certain of the two because they were DII championship games in the early '80s), the Mankato win...not to mention teams like UConn that spent much of their existence playing a mostly DIII schedule. There's just been so much movement by teams on that list that it's hard to tell which were legit DIII-DI matchups without pulling the dates for each.

Nice work PSUCHAMPS2001,DEREK & Dyce. Thats a .400 winning % as good or better than the bottom 30% of most all D1 conferences.

That was also when DIII players were smart enough to play more than 25 games a year

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

Really! Most all d3 players play many more games b4 college. For instance the EJHL plays 45 league games + preseason + playoffs. The cjhl plays 62 league games + preseason + playoffs(up to 21gms to win league). Even prepschools play 35 games. There is no logical reason other than $ for D3 to play less than 35-40 game schedule.
If anything make the playoffs a best of 3 or 5. Most all of theses games would draw good crowds which could help pay for poor drawing in season games. Just a thought.

we , oswego 85-87 not sure the yr, played clarkson at clarkson, almost got into a fight during warm-ups with that knight that skates around, pretty funny, I think they beat us by 3 or 4 goals, seemed like the BIg difference was the speed at first few shifts then the 3rd and 4th lines of Clarkson were on par with our first and second, in otherwords the depth was a big problem for us at that time,as our first few lines did well...it would b fun to see again, but it seems now-a-days the scheduling is much more limited.....ow well.

Potsdam tie low point of Cards' season (Excerpt from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican article from 2/19/10)

The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team has hit a few bumps in the road during the 2009-10 season.

One of those bumps came on Dec. 4 at the Stafford Ice Arena when the Cardinals blew a three-goal third-period lead and settled for a 3-all tie with Potsdam.

"That (game) may have been the lowlight of my coaching career," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "I can't ever remember giving up a three-goal lead, especially at home.

"There's still a lot at stake for both teams in this game. Potsdam still hasn't secured a playoff spot and we're fighting for a potential at-large bid into the NCAA (Division III) Tournament, if we don't win the conference."

"Potsdam has forwards who are as good as anyone in the league," Emery said. "They have had a problem keeping the puck out of their net. But, a goalie can get hot at any time.

"We need to focus on keeping the puck out of our net. And, hopefully, we will get enough pressure offensively.

"We're always Potsdam's biggest game of the year, especially over there. But, the good thing is that we get a good group of our fans to travel to the game."

"We got the leadership on Saturday and it showed," Emery said. "We generated a ton of offense."

Cardinal skaters best Potsdam (Excerpt from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican article from 2/20/10)

"We battled back for a win on the road," said Cardinals' head coach Bob Emery. "We got two guys back in the lineup. And, we scored seven goals.

"If we have had a weakness this year, it has been finding the back of the net."

Despite being down, 1-0, after one, Emery wasn't discouraged.

"We played a great first period," he said. "One mental mistake cost us a goal, but we still played pretty well."

Todd Hosmer then put the Bears up, 2-0, at 10:38 of the second and that may have helped Plattsburgh State.

"We had three two-on-ones we didn't score on and then they made it 2-0," Emery said. "Maybe, that ticked us off."

Kyle Kudroch finally put the Cardinals on the board at 11:14 and was followed by Vick Schlueter scoring a power-play goal at 12:14, Matt Bessing at 17:49 and Patrick Jobb at 19:32.

"Our second period was our best one," Emery said. "We had some good chances, like we did in the first period, but we hit the back of the net with them.

"We also hit two crossbars and could have been ahead by more than 4-2."

Kavanagh and forward Eric Satim returned to the lineup Friday for the Cardinals and were welcome additions.

"Both played real well," Emery said. "I was surprised how good they were considering how long they have been out of the line-up."

Ryan Williams stopped 18 of 21 shots in the Plattsburgh State nets and Trevor O'Neill made 27 saves on 34 shots for the Bears.

Plattsburgh State went 2-for-6 on the powerplay and held Potsdam scoreless on three tries with a man advantage.

"Our special teams were also good tonight," Emery said.

I'm shocked at this 20th century approach to playoff tickets a the "new" Stafford

Ticket Procedures for Men’s Hockey Playoffs

The Plattsburgh State Athletic Dept. announces ticket procedures for the State University of New York Athletic Conference Men’s Hockey Tournament when the Cardinals host a semi-final contest on Sat., Feb. 27. Game time at the Stafford Ice Arena will be at 7 pm.

Even little Norwich knows how to sell tickets over the internet, and take advance orders by mail for season ticket holders. And Platty is a lot bigger school with the resources of the state of NY behind them :)

Seriously, I'm surprised at that approach. It's not like you didn't have some time to plan this either.
