Penn State Womens Hockey

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

Taylor Gross (Junior/Forward) has been named the captain for Penn State's inaugural D-1 team. She transferred from UConn last season and was an immediate force for the women's club team, scoring 10 goals and 17 assists in 16 games. The official school announcement will be tomorrow, and the 2012-13 roster is supposed to be released with the announcement.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

There will be a D1 transfer goalie coming from Hockey East. It is not one that has been discussed yet, right school wrong goalie.

I was told that the goalie was from UConn. Don't know which one but they have a Jr and a So from last year. It seems the So would be the starter. Maybe with all the transfers from Uconn, there is some disention on the team.

We'll know tomorrow sometime, but only Paniccia and Garcia have stats on UConn's page from last season. That leaves the Freshman, Emily Walsh, assuming the other two with playing time are sticking with UConn.

Emily Walsh is likely a non-recruited walk-on at UConn. She played lower level boys travel hockey growing up. She played Boys Illinois High School hockey for Benet High School. She never played girls Tier I hockey.

I heard about Brooke going to PSU a while ago but couldn't see anything public.

Brooke played boys hockey and has never played Tier I girls (although she absolutely could have). Last few years, she has played AA hockey on the top Huskies Midget teams (as the #1 goalie) that won their league and have gone to Nationals.
She also was the #1 goalie on her boys varsity team a few years ago. She attended USA hockey National Camp a few years ago which is hard to do if you aren't playing girls.

She was just voted outstanding fenale athelete at her high school (3000+ kids) and is a standout shortstop of their softball team. It wouldn't surprise me if she plays on PSU's softball team as well.

Great kid, best of luck.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

I was looking for game results and stats on Penn States womens program last season and agree they should do much better to support fan development of the women's program.

Lindenwood did not have a stellar first season, but their game coverage was first rate. Each week saw a set of game notes for the upcoming weekends play and there was a game recap following virtually every game. Box scores typically went up within an hour or two following completion of the game.

Apprarently all CHA games wil be available this season on the Internet. With that capability, I cannot see why a school of Penn States stature cannot create a top rate site with writing coverage on every game, be it from staff or student journalists.

Lindenwood really is a first rate operation in most aspects. Their men's team takes a lot around the ACHA for their (alleged) creative ways to get aid to club players, but I really have no doubt they'll eventually have a very good NCAA women's program.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

With the women's program getting their own SID sometime before the season starts, that should improve on last season's coverage, to say the least. I'm sure the NCAA is a lot more strict about timely submissions from the game scorers than the ACHA was last year, so that will be a big difference.
The women are getting their own SID? Is that per Brandwene? Hadn't heard that. Going to go apply, brb.

Looking at the PSU staff directory, it looks like football and men's and women's basketball are the only sports that get their own SID. Wrestling and women's volleyball (both of which are big at PSU for outsiders) have SIDs with other sports, but they're fairly light assignments. I'm guessing the new SID would take over M&W golf, at minimum, to go with women's hockey. The men's hockey SID maybe keeps men's lacrosse, but is largely freed up to focus on hockey.

Basically, I'm trying to say don't count on someone who lives and breathes women's hockey 24/7/365 to fill the role. It will probably just be one of several sports that person covers.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

A lot of players from the Lady Icers and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Interesting, is it because the Pittsburgh girls will only have to pay in-state tuition?

I know the women's team isn't getting an exclusive SID, but an SID that doesn't have to cover men's and women's hockey. He or she will have other assignments, but there will be one SID to cover the women's team and one SID to cover the men's team. That's how I understand it, anyway.

that's pretty standard, nothing new or different from the way the other major programs do it..

There are multiple reasons: (I am not sure that tuition played much of a decision)

1. A LOT of PA kids, especially Pittsburgh, grow up wanting to goto Penn State, I suspect the same as a lot of Minn kids want to goto The U. As soon as PSU announced ice hockey, many of the Penguins girls reached out (most even during the rumor phase) to the club coaches at the time, expressing their interest. I know for 2 of the girls it was their #1 choice.

2. Jill Holdcroft, who played for Pittsburgh as it was the closest tier 1 program (3 hrs away), she lives in State College and played Varsity (boys) ice hockey for State College HS. Her dad played on the PSU club team and she's always wanted to go there.

3. Darby Kern (maybe Hux will add her to the list now that she's on the roster), both parents are alums and brother goes there now. This is very, very common at Penn State. A lot of legacies. She was only considering other schools until PSU announced ice hockey.

4. Stephanie Walkom is from Pittsburgh and didn't want to go very far from home. While she has no family connection to PSU (both parents are from Ontario), and Penn State was high on her list due to proximity to home.

5. Tess Weaver is also a Pengiuns Elite player and she went to Penn State knowing that one year was club, hoping to make the d1 team and by all accounts she had a good year and earned her spot.

As someone else stated, it was a little surprising Katie Vaughan wasn't on the roster. She was recruited by several other d1 schools but wanted to goto Penn State (close to home and they are very well known in her major).

6. Due to proximity the coaches at PSU were able to watch the Pens Elite play quite a bit. Again, same as New England girls get exposed to Boston, HE schools more, etc. I suspect at will continue into the future. Obviously everyone knows some top girls out there who wouldn't have considered a start-up program, so that may have opened some spots for these girls. But, Josh has done a decent job, including some transfers, all this considered.

Also, the Pitt Pens Elite program, girls hockey in general is very "young" in Pittsburgh. They've only had 3 graduating classes of girls from u19. And they have shown they have developed into a very competitive program. This class has 7 girls playing d1 next year -- Walkom, Holdcroft, Kern, Brown, Lesperance, Vesci and Bell. I would say that level of advancement per year ranks up with top pwhl teams, Assabet, Little Caesars, etc. so, I think there will be more Penn State players in the future.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

While I am sure she will do an excellent job and looking at her past the hire is not out of the blue. However, their were far more qualified and experienced candidates with some high end DI experience who did not even get a call back. Somewhat curious to say the least.

Maybe she was brought in specifically to work with the goalies given her background, but then you'd think she'd be listed as a goalie coach and not an assistant coach. Alas, nobody axed me first.

Why? There are plenty of former netminders in the coaching ranks .ot listed as "Goalie" coach.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

I was just engaging in mindless speculation. I'm bored. The Bulldogs have a goalie coach on staff, so I thought maybe that was the norm.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

Why would a coach with D1 experience make a better coach than a coach with D3 experience? If no one hires coaches to go to the next level, then no coaches will ever move up the ranks. Penn State obviously thinks she fits their need the best, otherwise they wouldn't have hired her.
