Penn State - Division I Hockey 2.0

Re: Penn State - Division I Hockey 2.0

Penn Live

This article shows the time line and how long the talks had been going on.

Hope Battista was able to get all the slime residue out from being in contact with David Jones. Yuck.

But this article is a perfect illustration of why I'm skeptical when Paul Kelly drops the names of 20 schools where NCAA hockey is allegedly imminent. Even at PSU, a large northeastern school with a great club program and rumors since forever, it took a ridiculous number of things coming together over the course of years, not months.

To be fair, the only one of those things that mattered was a filthy ****ing rich donor. It's funny how things just sort of happen when money is around.

True enough lol...but even so, what if said filthy rich guy doesn't have a hockey-playing kid who camped at PSU? And even with everything working out, it was still five years from the first conversations until an announcement.

I guess I probably should've just said "how many schools have alumni with $88 million and willing to spend it in that way?" Because without that, it's **** hard.

I think a few teams in recent years have proven that you don't need $80+ million to start a D-I program.

Re: Penn State - Division I Hockey 2.0

Yeah, but having 88 million to kick things off sure helps. Schools like Findlay and Wayne State didn't have that kind of backing, and they're not skating any more.

Another way to start up is have ice making capabilities installed when a new arena is built case in point UMASS.

Zing! :D A month or so ago Jones had "confidential sources" that told him the Jordan Center was going to be retrofitted with ice-making facilities.

Right you are -- we've known about this for some time, but there was always the chance that the whole deal between the Pegulas and the university could get flushed down the dumper.

Penn State's move is not going to open the floodgates of teams joining the NCAA, either as a "move" from the ACHA or an entirely new program.

More to the point, it makes me wonder which masters Paul Kelly is serving. I have no problem with things that aid college hockey at large... but a raft of top level schools does not help the main body that is currently college hockey. I'm sorry, I know this whole talent level fight with the CHL system is important to some degree... but mostly because the CHL will lie to the kids and rework their systems for the benefit of the CHL and not the kids. Other stuff? Higher profile is nice... what matters is the cost.

FYI, Bruce McLeod said on TV (BSU vs. NoDak) that Jim Delaney has told him the Big 10 intends to start the BTHC in 2014. Not surprising, just haven't heard anything like this from anyone official before.

There you have it the announcement is semi-official.

What do you think about Penn State starting a Division I program? And what about early conversation that Penn State is trying to lure Wisconsin and Minnesota away from from the WCHA? Does the WCHA need to make some early moves to protect itself? Do you predict some of the same changes in college hockey that we saw in college football?
--Rich

Jim and Rich, the Big Ten Conference has stated their intention to sponsor a Big Ten hockey conference once Penn State officially begins Division I play. It is estimated they would start for the 2014- 2015 season.

All six of the Big Ten hockey schools (Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State and Penn State) will be obligated to play in the Big Ten hockey conference no matter what their loyalties are to their current leagues.

The WCHA is determined to maintain its status as the best college hockey conference in the country. The WCHA is currently reviewing and discussing all future strategies for scheduling and expansion.

Coach, thanks for taking the time

The design firms for the new arena were selected on Friday. Details are here, and here's my interview with Assistant AD for Hockey Joe Battista. The audio is a bit out of synch - stupid YouTube! :D

Re: Penn State - Division I Hockey 2.0

Actually, much of the best talent in the United States comes out of California right now. Whether that can be attributed to Gretzky or simply the NHL expanding into non-traditional hockey markets is debatable but the facts are that some of the best players in the country are from California.

I agree that the sport has significantly grown in California over the years, and yes especially since the Gretzky era, but to say the best in the country is a stretch still. They are still behind Minnesota, Mass. Mich. and New York as far as producing talent. Minnesota alone contributes to about 40% of the total participants in NCAA Div. 1 Men's Hockey. Which blows everyone else out of the water. Has the most Americans drafted this past year and many years previous, and has the most current active NHLers playing by a narrower margain. I'm not disputing that there has been some good players from Cali, but I wouldn't say the best. Currently Minnesota has the most Americans in the NHL with 36, Michigan 27, New York 26, Mass 15.... and California has 3.

Really! Since when is the state of Pennsylvania known for great hockey? Did we miss something?

Well it is the birthplace of professional hockey. Don't believe a word of what those Yoopers tell you.

The WCHA is determined to maintain its status as the best college hockey conference in the country.

That ship has already sailed. HE all the way :D

Re: Penn State - Division I Hockey 2.0

Steve what rinks will Joe Battista visit?

I already saw him at Mariucci this season. I suspected something when I saw a guy in a Penn State Hockey shirt carrying a camera around and I believe it was the guy in the vid. Can't recall which game, maybe UMass.

Might be easier to answer which ones he WON'T visit.

Off the top of my head, I know Joe, Terry Pegula and others from the athletic department have been to Mariucci, Duluth, BU and BC, Miami, Notre Dame and I think Quinnipiac.

I thought I heard they would announce a new coach after the Frozen Four.
