PC Hockey.....continues to grow

Re: PC Hockey.....continues to grow

Been quiet so let's look at some issues PC and Leaman face in the next couple of years.

First goaltending, playing time and how much of your scholarship money you have devoted to the position.

To begin with I would think Gillies has a pretty solid promise he has to lose the job. Would also think that he doesn't have to outshine the others to get the job in "preseason". I would guess since college experience among the 4 is equal immediate past performance and ranking are his aces. That between the 4 of the contenders there is exactly 20 minutes (and the guy with that looks to be the bottom guy). Deeper though and steering towards the discussion of scholarship money, who dresses. to me it seems Stein does not stack up and is the odd man out. Realistically since Wells is a walk on with no experience he gets bumped. Maybe it provides flexibility down the road if he has red shirted and in a few years you are looking for a dependable back up. Still moneywise I don't wonder if it is not LaPlante who is odd man out. Of the 3 he was clearly directly recruited over to bring Gillies (Stein playing out string senior year, Wells walking on and was going to be backup anyway). A look at the roster suggests strongly that we are at or just below our 18 scholarships this year, with the 4 commits for 13-14 I think we are pretty much a wash. However I think with some of the backend money going to the rising sophomore class we are set to be a hair over already without even having a 14-15 recruit. One answer of course you need to think about is Gillies proves to be a 1 and done guy. Still you have Ellis scheduled to come in and now with USHL experience. If Gillies stays year 2 I would assume you might seek to delay Ellis a year, but you very well might have the reverse situation with Gillies where Ellis sees a roadblock to playing time. Especially if he senses at all that Gillies plan is not quite on the schedule he has now.

All that said the most obvious route to getting money freed is that LaPlante becomes totally fustrated. He now sees Gillies in front of him for a year or two and potentially a more talented prospect in Ellis jumping in front right after. Still with a tight scholarship situation can you endure 3 more years of using almost a sixth of your scholarship money on goalies--we still need to prove we have solved the lack of goal scoring . The only reason I can't see LaPlante leaving is that A) has already lost a year of playing time, a transfer would cost him another B) I believe he has aged out of juniors since he is 21 by the start of the season so he can't go off and play somewhere else and wait to gain eligibility a la Kaib.

Since goaltending is so key to success how Leman handles this is set to be a key to how fast the Friars climb.

Re: PC Hockey.....continues to grow

2nd issue. A lot of articles have pointed to Jankowski spending a year in the USHL. Do you want that or think both him and PC would best be served with im at PC.

There is a question of how strong his competition has been. The sample of skill that has dazzled people in his rise in the rankings is a very small sample. Age wise he is a Sept '94 birthday which puts him on track at the moment to be the 3rd youngest player in Hockey East, with one of the younger players already having USHL expereince. Also at 170 pounds on a 6'2" frame he clearly has some need to bulk up.

On the other hand you minimally open yourself to another year of potentially going the major junior route. Since you have bound him this year with an LOI you can not do so again to cover next year, since you can sign only 1 LOI and it is good only for the upcoming year. Then you get to the structure of this year's team. Losing Berland and Balysky and gaining what they have is an improved offense but by no means is it lights out. Would not a chance to play 4th line at his natural center position at this level be the greatest benefit to him growing. I am sure he will put some bulk on by sept anyway. If he proves ready you can move him to a wing position on the top 3 lines and feed him into the 2nd power play unit. We are not that deep that his presence on the 4th line is not a gigantic gain in talent over David Brown. Further you have to assume his plans for the 16-17 season are to be getting paid to do this and I certainly wouldn't bet the ranch that plan is to spend the 15-16 season in Providence unless it is with the PBruins. the point being wouldn't we get the most out of him by bringing him in now?

Re: PC Hockey.....continues to grow

Third issue is How good is John Gilmour.

Clearly Leaman is banking quite heavily on him, he saw fit to move on 2 of his younger defensemen. Yet on paper Gilmour was not extraordinary in the USHL. You can give him he was younger than many of peers in the USHL, but by no means is he the youngest or most highly regarded. There is offensive potential, his 10 goals did rank fairly high on the defensemen scoring list but his assists were not anything really special. At about the same height as Kaib he has considerably less bulk.

Still Leaman has a lot riding on him. My understanding is he is a full boat guy. consider that is more than Army gave to New, Baier, Adams Hart or Wyszomirski. To an extent you can carry some inexperience on the blue line with 4 juniors and seniors. However is what he brings to the table enough to greatly improve a defense that consistently had trouble clearing the puck at key moments.

My point is I think this is the guy to see if Leaman/staff are really capable of getting us the underrated player who will be so key to building out a winning roster.

Gillies expects a busy summer ahead
By Nathan Fournier Published: 6th June 2012

Gillies recently took part in the NHL Combine in Toronto. The South Portland native will attend Providence College in the fall.

Jon Gillies is gearing up for a busy off-season.

The South Portland netminder attended the NHL Combine last week in the Toronto, Ontario

Despite dealing with an injury to his hip, Gillies thought the experience was a positive one.

Just curious, can someone tell me why Adams was a DNP for so many games last year, particularly the stretches in the early and late parts of the season (7 straight and 9 straight games missed)? Injury? Benched?

He had an injury at the end of the season.

Re: PC Hockey.....continues to grow

Mike Logan seems to think Jankowski can defer his admission to Sept. 2013 while remaining within the LOI he signed with PC.

Coach is showing him as either 2012 or 2013 right now, not as a definate 2012 meaning he could play USHL in 2012 and still come to PC????????

Re: PC Hockey.....continues to grow

Jonathan Quick MVP. Interesting that some didn't think he could play at PC. Congrats to the kings and also Mark Fayne on playing for Lord Stanley's cup.

Portland, ME — What a great start to the week for South Portland native Jon Gillies and Cumberland native Brian Hart.

Re: PC Hockey.....continues to grow

Jankowski being drafted that high was the reach of the draft. The good news is he looks like at least a 2 year player for the Friars. I didn't realize how thin he was. Gonna need to hit the Schneider weight room.

I'd say they let him develop at least 3 years.

There were plenty of mock drafts and lists that placed him in the late teens, so for some he actually slid. As you kind of hinted at what he is delayed graftification. When he does put that weight on all the reports talk about the tremendous upside/ceiling. You have to remember if he was an American kid he would just be going into his senior year in high school. They pointed out he very well might be the youngest guy in the draft since he is eligible by 2 days. Techinically (since it appears he is going to Dubuqe for a year) he will still be an 18 year old when he walks onto the PC campus in Sept 13. I had looked quickly some time ago and he would have been the 3rd youngest guy in the league this year. Still is going to be one of the younger guys in the league when he arrives in '13. For instance of the already recruited class for Sept 13 only Florentino will be younger than him. Rufo, Ellis and Reed are all older than him by several months

Clearly he does have work to add muscle to his body in filling out. With the year in the USHL I would venture he will be coming in at almost 6'4 and about 195, which is still mean the 2nd year will still have growing pains. By sophomore year he should be at about Schaller's size. Good sophomore year and he will move on as the physical growth would be pretty nearly done.

My bigger concern about him holding off coming a year means we have an unused scholarship for the upcoming year. Last year it hurt by not getting the full use of our scholarships (Accari being ineligible, Luke taking a half year to get eligible + the expectation that we had Murphy (who without ever playing a game has been named a captain--I'll have to tip my cap to Hokydad for calling that) We have more depth this year but we still must prove we have solved our lack of goal scoring before we move up..
