PC Hockey.....continues to grow

Re: PC Hockey.....continues to grow

Andrew Weiss‏@WeissFC

No decision this morning from Jon Gillies in terms of where he will be playing. Have to assume he has yet to get ahold of all of the teams

Wow. Well there's still the draft in 4 weeks but this sounds good. If he's a legit 6'3 flatfooted he's got to look huge on skates and between the pipes.

Matt Merten (PC/MSC) was about same size but Gillies would probably rank with Howard (Maine) as maybe the largest G in HE history?

Hopefully everybody who's committed ('12) arrive in Sept, ready to go.

Gillies commits to Providence
By Nathan Fournier Published: 21st May 2012

Portland, ME – Jon Gillies is taking his talents to Providence, Rhode Island.

The highly coveted goaltender from South Portland announced Monday afternoon that he will be attending Providence College in the fall.

Gillies’ decision to select the Friars over the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League came after visiting both locations last week.

Are you thinking of Ben Bishop of Maine he's 6'6

Todays ProJo has him at 6' 5" so he is a big one for sure

Re: PC Hockey.....continues to grow

Yah, he's THAT tall ... all arms and legs. Still pretty skinny, but more time in the weight room (& at the buffet) will help that. I'm glad he chose the NCAA route & I'll add PC hockey to my list of sites to keep an eye on!

Reports: Top Prospect Jon Gillies Picks PC Over Quebec

Posted by: Scott McLaughlin
Jon Gillies, one of the top goaltending prospects in this summer’s NHL draft, will play for Providence next season, according to multiple reports. Gillies had originally committed to Northeastern, but he chose to decommit earlier this spring when Chris Rawlings elected to stay for his senior season.

Gillies narrowed his choices down to Providence, Notre Dame and the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Andrew Weiss of Future Considerations reported over the weekend that Gillies had eliminated Notre Dame from consideration. Gillies’ pick of Providence over Quebec was reported by both Weiss and Nathan Fournier of the Maine Hockey Journal. He told Weiss that he picked Providence because it allowed him “more time to develop if needed.”

Gillies, a native of South Portland, Maine, played for the Indiana Ice of the United States Hockey League this past season. The 6-foot-5 netminder led the league with 31 wins and ranked fourth with a .915 save percentage. Gillies was recently ranked sixth among North American goalies in NHL Central Scouting’s final draft rankings.

The Friars now have four goalies lined up for next year’s roster — Gillies, senior Russ Stein, sophomore Julien Laplante and incoming freshman Dylan Wells. Gillies adds to an already-impressive recruiting class for second-year coach Nate Leaman. He joins, among others, fellow NHL draft hopefuls Mark Jankowski and Paul DeJersey, both of whom were ranked among Central Scouting’s top 100 North American skaters.

Re: PC Hockey.....continues to grow

Sounds like a good recruiting class is shaping up. If indeed Gillies selected PC over Notre Dame in addition to the Quebec team, as the CHN story suggests, it is nice to know PC can now win those recruiting battles. I am getting excited about the goings on at The Coffin but still know it will take some time to fully right the ship. Good job Mr. Leaman.

Sounds like a fine recruiting class. Unless last year's frosh suffer a "sophomore slump" PC should be a factor this year. As for Gillies, it is my understanding that Notre Dame didn't have a scholarship for him, but tried to use the "Fighting Irish" rep to recruit him on a 4 for 3 (ala BC). His personal game plan had him in college for no more than 2 years. Over at NU, Rawlings planned to stay for two or possibly three years. Funny how how these "game plans" get adjusted.

Re: PC Hockey.....continues to grow

I am ready to see where this program is heading. So far everything points to up. Looking forward to seeing Dejersey, Jankowski and Gillies
