Re: Part III of the XXIst Winter Olympiad Or how I Learned to Stop Worryng & Love Curling

No, I'm a realist.

NBC is in the business of getting ratings and selling ads. Did you notice that there were NO commercials during the game? Combine that with the ratings they are *guaranteed* for a silly ice dancing exhibition and a gamble on hockey (which gets DISMAL ratings) is not a viable option. Any network executive who wrote a memo or went to a meeting and said, "Let's put our highest rated shows on MSNBC and put a hockey game on NBC" would be summarily fired.

I dont disagree that hockey would not have had great ratings (though we will never know). Again my point was that if that game could have been on NBC it could have been huge for the sport. And only if it would have been that game as it was played. That was all I was trying to say. A game like that is what attracts people to the sport.

That would work, and is apparently what NBC did, as Scarlet pointed out below.
Since nobody was watching NBC for the duration, we don't know how late they cut into the hockey game. My idea was to cut in for the entire 3rd period, not just the last 2 minutes or whatever it was that NBC actually did in this case (I doubt they cut in for the whole 3rd).

Indeed - :D

Apparently they only cut in for the last minute...

Ice Dancing had exactly one moment when a significant number of people cared. That moment has come and gone, and Torvil and Dean have retired. Game over.

Who and who?

Did you notice that there were NO commercials during the game?

For which we should thank the Tourism British Columbia folks who sponsored the commercial free broadcast, it was awesome. :)

The last 30 seconds or so of the game is what they showed on NBC. We don't get MSNBC; nmu_27 was watching on the computer and I was watching NBC.

Re: Part III of the XXIst Winter Olympiad Or how I Learned to Stop Worryng & Love Curling

Maybe the fastest tempo game I've ever seen, and I give credit to playing the game on regulation North American ice instead of letting teams waste time in the wide lanes of the traditional 100 foot width rink. Well, that plus the teams are incredibly well designed.

I hadn't seen a lot of Ryan Kesler the last couple years, but he had an outstanding game.

From a North Dakota fan perspective, watching Canada send out Toews to shut down the Parise line left me with mixed emotions. If not for Johnny! setting up a couple goals, where would Canada have been?

I take back all the bad thoughts I had about selecting Chris Drury for the team. He was really good tonight too.

Couple USA guys had problems keeping up with the speed of the game, but give credit to USA coaching staff for a game plan that was the only way to beat Canada (counterattack, come at them fast and on the direct line, hit them when you can).

PS I still think USA could have used Oshie ... ;)

I think he's still the same guy he was back then... He just doesn't have the weight of the hype machine on his shoulder this time...

Since NBC is tape-delaying everything, that would have been reasonable. Bob Costas could have said the ice dancing venue was having ice problems :p

Yeah, he could've thwarted Canada's offense by urinating in front of the US goal.

God, the delay between the "studio" and the three at the ice arena is staggering.

Gary Bettman coming up on MSNBC...just a reminder not to throw rotten vegetables at him - you'll only ruin your TV.

It's basically like having Jason Blake on the team.

Who and who?

Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean who are the only skaters who received all perfect 6.0's. That was quite possibly the most amazing gold medal skate I've ever seen.
