Part II of the XXIst Winter Olympiad....and NBC still sucks.

Re: Part II of the XXIst Winter Olympiad....and NBC still sucks.

IIRC (and I was eight years old at the time), Harding was said to be a "power skater" - she could do the big jumps that most women at the time couldn't land, but often lacked grace. That and her choke artistry after the assault cost her any chance at a respectable finish.

Exactly. She had the power to master a trick that at the time none of the other women could master, but she looked like a Kelvinator doing it. There's more to it than just mastering a trick.

edit: plus, she's an embarrassment to the people on My Name is Earl.

I dunno, I think I'd be circumspect about it if circumstances were reversed. The NBC folks commented about Plushenko's routine being front-loaded, I know Lysacek hit one three-jump combo and Plushenko didn't have any of those that I can recall, and the little bobbles on the jumps were visible. I felt from the eyeball test that there was plenty of room for Plushenko to come in second.

Sure. I was just falling back on my reflexive Cold War response. Lysacek has been very gracious in this whole deal. He told somebody (Costas?) that he regarded Plushenko as his mentor/idol and he can't understand why the Russian is behaving this way. To my knowledge, Plushenko hasn't said anything positive about the American, just b***h, b***h, b***h that he didn't win. Lysacek skated the best routines of his life and had the scores to prove it. He deserves some credit here.

Re: Part II of the XXIst Winter Olympiad....and NBC still sucks.

Greetings from Vancouver.

Just got here today - weather is gorgeous, sunny and warm (50s) - not at winter-like here in the city. I've been all over the world and this city is the perhaps the most stunningly beautiful along with Rio, Paris and St. Petersburg.

There are thousands of people in the streets here and the mood is festive, to say the least. Lots of Maple Leafs and red everywhere you look, although lots of other countries have large contingents.

First event I attended was women's curling - never seen it live and judging by the 4,000 screaming Canadians and a few hundred Swiss in the crowd decked out in red and white, the place reminded me of a loud, but cozy college hockey crowd. Olympic Curling in person is kinda hard to watch with four games going on at the same time, but after a while, you start to understand it.

More events tomorrow - Hockey and Short Track. Will report more later.

Speaking of curling... that denmark team looked cute

True, and Putin whining is the more annoying part too. He thinks he's gonna become a hyperpower by whining about skating? At least Stalin had the balls to take over Eastern Europe!

Putin's putting his two cents out there now? Sheesh.

Colour me jealous!

Re: Part II of the XXIst Winter Olympiad....and NBC still sucks.

Sorry to be spouting off here, but I've been busy on the DU/MTU scoring thread. But how about a shout out to Evan Lysacek? Not only does he win the gold. But he keeps his cool and his dignity in the face of non stop whining by Pluskenko.

I'm far from an expert in figure skating, but the Russian seems to think if he does a "quad" the gold should automatically be his. BS! Remember during the Nancy Kerrigan/Tonya Harding imbroglio we were constantly told that Tonya was either the first American woman or the only American woman who could do a "triple?" Maybe, but during the rest of program she looked like a dump truck on skates. Not that Plushenko does, but to my untrained eye, Lysacek looked like he outskated him last night. Besides, a lifetime of watchig the USA get screwed in the Olympics has made me a bit jaded when a Russian complains.

I just watched Evan's one on one interview with Bob Costas from yesterday and he was so gracious. I am so happy he won and sooooooooo happy Plushenko has to suck on that silver. What a whiny crybaby. He apparently thinks one jump in a 4:40 program should decide the champion. Unfortunately Plushy, your skating-in-molasses spins, your pathetic attempts at artistry and your utter lack of anything resembling a jump in the entire final minute of your program might have also had something to do with it. I thought Dice-K should have won the silver over him.

I also thought Johnny Weir's scores were incredibly low. I do not think it was good enough for a medal (given that he was 6th going into the long program), but Canada's Patrick Chan was behind him, fell on his triple axel and managed to vault over him.

Re: Part II of the XXIst Winter Olympiad....and NBC still sucks.

That's great. And Nordic combined is one of the newer events. How many Americans were in the hunt in any of the cross country or biathlon events. Zero unless I've missed somebody. Ever is certainly a long time. And I wish we would do better in these events. My point, not especially well made, was that while we've improved in many areas of winter Olympic competition we still trail badly in the Nordic events and there's no reason other than optimism, to think that's going to change.

Actually, the Eurosport commentators were saying that one of the U.S. biathletes was tops overall on the circuit until late December when his form left him and has not been competitive since (I think he placed in the high 20s in the latest event).

Re: Part II of the XXIst Winter Olympiad....and NBC still sucks.

Replay of the Russia/US women's curling match on Universal HD right now. Worth it just to see the Russian women again. :)

Re: Part II of the XXIst Winter Olympiad....and NBC still sucks.

Shuster back in today for US men's curling. Sure that will make a lot of folks here happy. :D

Jinx.

Re: Part II of the XXIst Winter Olympiad....and NBC still sucks.

 to people ripping on Schuster. It gets old.

Re: Part II of the XXIst Winter Olympiad....and NBC still sucks.

Shuster is back in as skip, but throwing 3rd. Smith will shoot last today.

If they want to put him back in, that's definitely the way to go. Smith was money yesterday throwing last rocks. Hopefully, with some of the pressure off, Shuster will get back to throwing the way he's capable; he won't be able to kill them the same way from third as from last, but he could still put them in a hole if he's off.

I understand that it's not really fair - he's a bartender usually. It's not like people are going to rip a bartender. However, he's also an Olympian - he signed up for this. And I'm sure he basked in the glow of winning bronze in Torino.

He says he loves the pressure, but when that pressure has come he hasn't executed.

Plan working thus far. Sweden has a chance for 1 with the hammer, or 3 for the US if they miss.

Edit: US takes 1 in the first. Solid result.
