Wow. Amy Williams wins GB's first medal of the 2010 Olympics and the Canadians are protesting her helmet, which was cleared before.

What happened to the Canadians being nice.

Olympic themed:

(757):
I understand Curling. That high.

(262):
i just jacked off to lindsey vonn, i feel so patriotic
(414):
USA! USA! USA!

(310):
Weird s* dude, I just realized that the girl I f*ed last night looks like Shaun White's twin sister. I dunno if I should be scared or turned on

(1-310):
I hope her Double McTwist was as good as his

Never interrupt a guy on a roll. But White says he wants to rename the trick The Tomahawk after some monster steak he ate at Vail (I think) last year. When I read that, John Candy's face popped into my head. He didn't get an Olympic trick named after him.

My thoughts exactly. It looks terrifying.

It's much scarier in person. TV tends to compress the downward slope. It's like in the downhill, you don't realize how steep and how fast they're going 'til somebody crashes, and they fly azzhole over teacups for two or three hundred yards.

It looks terrifyingly fast on tv. As in *whoosh* - the camera can't quite keep up. I can't decide if I'd actually like to see it live. :o

A line has to be drawn somewhere in ogling women. That line is figure skating/ice dancing. :p

Without this line, one could justify watching Lifetime movies if the 5th rate actresses are hot or dress scantily.

And there is no justification for Lifetime. It should have been password locked out on your tv by a one night stand that you never speak to again.

What a terrible, terrible stone by Denmark.

I've been able to up in Lake Placid... well, as much watching as you can do as guys go past you around a corner at 80mph or better. It's only a little crazy, almost as exciting as underwater basket weaving.;)

What non-racers don't know is that these courses are about as hard as the ice on a hockey rink. Course workers actually ice them down at night.

We were heading up to the start house for the men's downhill in Sapporo. To get there you took a tram, then a chairlift and then climbed the last little bit on some stairs. Our producer slipped off those stairs and started to head down an Olympic downhill course backwards, on his azz. 42 degree incline coming out of the start house. Fortunately some people behind us were able to get ski poles out for the guy to grab on to. Otherwise no telling how far he would have slid. It was exactly like a frozen pond. Only a mile and a half in the air. Pass.

I would say the sliding sports are much better seen on TV. You stake out some place on the course and all you can see are people whizzing by you, one right after the other. And they're all going way fast, with the difference between winning and losing measured in hundredths of a second. Same thing with an Alpine event. You're at the bottom of the hill and all you see live is people crossing the finish line.

Re: Part II of the XXIst Winter Olympiad....and NBC still sucks.

Sorry to be spouting off here, but I've been busy on the DU/MTU scoring thread. But how about a shout out to Evan Lysacek? Not only does he win the gold. But he keeps his cool and his dignity in the face of non stop whining by Pluskenko.

I'm far from an expert in figure skating, but the Russian seems to think if he does a "quad" the gold should automatically be his. BS! Remember during the Nancy Kerrigan/Tonya Harding imbroglio we were constantly told that Tonya was either the first American woman or the only American woman who could do a "triple?" Maybe, but during the rest of program she looked like a dump truck on skates. Not that Plushenko does, but to my untrained eye, Lysacek looked like he outskated him last night. Besides, a lifetime of watchig the USA get screwed in the Olympics has made me a bit jaded when a Russian complains.

IIRC (and I was eight years old at the time), Harding was said to be a "power skater" - she could do the big jumps that most women at the time couldn't land, but often lacked grace. That and her choke artistry after the assault cost her any chance at a respectable finish.

Re: Part II of the XXIst Winter Olympiad....and NBC still sucks.

The thing of it is, aside from the quad, I get the impression that Plushenko's program was fairly conservative, and particularly with a lot of minor mistakes, that cost him. He wasn't doing as many or as interesting jumps and combinations late in the program as Lysacek was. As they pointed out tonight, Lysacek actually had a higher technical score than Plushenko did.

(It's also noteworthy that it's not as though Lysacek has completely eschewed the quad in his career. He has a place for it in his program, but has foregone it over the last month or so due to injury concerns.)

The truth of the matter is if it had come out the other way, Lysacek had landed a "quad" and Plushenko didn't even try one and Plushenko had taken the gold, I'd probably be b****ing. But you're right, it's not only a matter of doing the tricks, it's how do you get from one trick to another. And Lysacek looked better to me.

As I said last night, these figure skaters spend their entire competitive careers in the equivalent of sudden death overtime. No margin for error, no real chance to make up for a mistake. I think I'd be a little high strung, too.

Uwe Krupp clearly doesn't understand what it means when a NHL team keeps one goalie over the other.
