Crowd was pretty excited about the Russians losing. Wonder why. :p

I love the Slovaks. Expected their offense to be more of a factor at this point, instead of just Demitra, but I still love them.

Re: Part II of the XXIst Winter Olympiad....and NBC still sucks.

That was the best hockey game of the Olympics yet. :D

Today could only have been better if Canada had lost in the shootout too. At least the Swiss did us a favor and made Cindy bleed.

Re: Part II of the XXIst Winter Olympiad....and NBC still sucks.

You have to be glad the Americans won both their first two in regulation after these last two games.
These last two games make me feel a ton better about the 3-1 game to Switzerland.

I think the Swiss still have some fight in them and will surprise their way to the Quarterfinals.

This is either really sad or hilarious based on how much of a masochist you are.

She injured her knee on the fall. Basically wrecking the Olympics for her.

That was the event Vonn won the gold in. Saw that on NBC that night and commented on it. Must be hard to work that hard and that have something like that happen to you.

Re: Part II of the XXIst Winter Olympiad....and NBC still sucks.

I think they said Shuster's team was seeded 4th at the US qualifiers, and pulled off a couple of upsets to get to Vancouver.

A look at wikipedia shows that he tied for 2nd in the round robin at qualifying, won the tiebreaker for the #2 seed, lost to the #1 seed in the "quarters" (winner advanced straight to final), beat the #3 seed in the semis, then upset the #1 seed by one in the finals.

Why curling uses the cluster**** hybrid of a system rather than a true double elimination tourny, I have no idea.

Hey Canada, how is that own the podium thing going?

Would be interesting to see the ratio of dollars spent on the national program to medals won. Have to think Norway is far and away the most efficient. We have a great program, but we're also the Yankees.

(This doesn't help the Canucks any, they spent plenty. They're the Mets -- all that budget and nothing to show.)

The old days? Someone pointed out that shootouts have been part of the olympics way longer than the NHL.

I saw this last night but i was way too tired to say anything... people used the shootout in the Olympics to show that they should do it in the NHL... then the IIHF has gone "well, they use the shootout in the NHL...." So, of course change begets change due to bandwagon effect and the slippery slope effect.

Here's the thing that people may not notice outright... in this case the removal of tie games means that a tie in the standings occurs much less often. You'll need not only a "circle of death" where everybody goes 1-1 in that circle... but you'll also need for that circle to do it all in the same manner... regulation or shootout in each case (do they do OTL?). Yes, there might be some unusual exception to this but what you effectively do is remove a lot of the "run up the score" incentive. Now, its always there in short tournaments because things do happen but they happen with a fraction of the frequency they may have in the past.

So, while the shootout is still crap it does have an effective role in reducing a common problem in IIHF competitions.

Are we really the Yankees though? In the big money sports yes, but some of the other minor athletes from other countries get a lot more of their stuff paid for than our guys do.
