So the US Men's Curling team should be 3-1 and sitting pretty, but because their skip sucks they're 0-4 and all but eliminated?!

Seems to me we should be killer in curling. Every small town and city in the midwest has curling and most country clubs in that part of the country also have curling. So what's up here?

Poor team selection, obviously. Live and learn, I guess - try not to pick a mental midget for a skip next time.

Yeah, when I think "hockey," (men's or women's) I sure as hell don't think "China."

From what I've read around, when China was looking to make inroads at the Olympics to find events they could quickly rise up and become world powers at (that whole communist perception thing like the Soviet Union did) women's hockey was viewed as a weak enough sport worldwide that they decided to devote resources to it.

It's already paying off for them as China is ranked 7th in the world and obviously has some talent on their roster. In another Olympics or two, they'll be challenging for medals.

I think they said Shuster's team was seeded 4th at the US qualifiers, and pulled off a couple of upsets to get to Vancouver.

Blind squirrel finding a nut, maybe? Then again, some competitors just implode under the pressure of the Olympics.

We have open trials, where reputation and previous accomplishments and some national committee or another don't enter in to it. So even Michael Phelps had to qualify, and if he had had a bad go of it in Omaha, wouldn't have made it in all those events. That system works most of the time, but it can lead to sending someone who's clearly not our best

Certainly given the large fall-off after the US and Canada it's something where you could get to a medal after some time. Though they mentioned there are only like 500 women hockey players in all of China, and that U.S. players were actually involved in program's to get more rinks built and more women playing over there.

Ching Chang passes to Ping Ling...shot..save by Irina Ghronovokova...

Re: Part II of the XXIst Winter Olympiad....and NBC still sucks.

Did the announcer just say someone was shooting, or is there a Chinese player named "Shoo Ting"? Cuz there was a pause between the syllables, got me wondering.

I believe her name is Qi Xiuting. (pronounced "She Shoot-ing")

Add into the mix that ruthless central organization so typical of socialist states and the rewards for people who succeed, and I predict they'll be competitive soon. Years ago, in an ABC "Up Close and Personal" profile on Soviet gymnast Nelly Kim we learned this single gal had her own apartment in Moscow (a duplex with her coach living on the second level) and drove a foreign car (okay, it was a Pinto, so there's no accounting for taste). In those days, I'm guessing the number of young women with their own apartments and cars (let alone a foreign car) was very small and limited generally to world class athletes. The Soviet Union was a country where having a Pinto was a big deal.

Ah, I see. Well that's got to be confusing as hell for non-Chinese announcers. (Wasn't there a female athlete in the 08 games named "He" (spelled differently of course)?)

It's the ChiComms. They'll just grab up all the baby girls that get left out to die in the countryside and put them into toddler skates. In 20 years they'll be curbstomping us.
