easy, state, not yet, but getting Canada and Russia to meet in the semis is part of the plan! ;)

I have to say, even though I haven't figure skated since I was 9 (not being from a hockey family as a girl it was assumed that was what I would want to do and thus where I started skating) and never plan to again, I have to respect these guys. I'm a wimp on the ice without at least shinguards, and they do insane stuff with no padding at all.

All else aside, figure skaters absolutely KNOW EDGES in a way that would benefit lots and lots of hockey players.

I really don't get the judging for figure skating. 10% bonus after 2:15 into the program? W T F.

At that point I would imagine they are exhausted and dizzy from spinning, so I sort of get it. If you try and succeed at harder things when you're tired, I guess you deserve more than those that do all the hard moves when they are fresh and don't have burning legs and lungs.

I like China's jerseys. They remind me of old Flames or Denver shirts.

Dutch speed skater to NBC: 'Are you stupid?'

By Mary Vallis, National Post

Today's blooper comes courtesy of NBC, the same network being lambasted state-side for refusing to air Olympic events live. Looks like some of their reporters would have done well to study up before the Games, too.

When an NBCer got her chance to interview Dutch speed skater Sven Kramer, one of the most famous athletes in the Netherlands, about his gold medal right after the race, it started like this:

Reporter: "I need you to say your name, your country and the medal you just won here."

Kramer: "Are you stupid?"

Reporter: "For tape identification purposes."

Kramer: "Oh, hell no, I'm not going to do that."

At least Kramer was kind enough to note that the interviewer was American, not Canadian. And good for him. With this quip, 15 minutes on the international stage have probably just turned into at least an hour.

SteveP - nice!

Who let the figure skaters near the facepaint?! First clowns, now, some sort of little artistic design...

At least Tony Dungy and Jerry Jones are in attendance... they should straighten out these skaters.

At least these guys will have great careers as interior designers ahead of them.

Hehehe!! Bully for Kramer!!! Most of the guys there at the Olympics all have jersey or other numbers on them. Would it really kill the reporters there to scan the roster real quick, and maybe try their hand at pronouncing some of the names there??

Re: Part II of the XXIst Winter Olympiad....and NBC still sucks.

There's no doubt these male figure skaters are like a bunch of gilded show ponies--skittish with nostrils flaring and eyes rolling wildly. And they leave the men in the room searching for a copy of Popular Mechanics. On the other hand, they spend their entire competitive lives in what amounts to sudden death overtime. There's no next inning, or next possession or next hole. You make a mistake (and not necessarily a big mistake) in the short program and you're done. And perhaps a life time of work is out the window. And their sport (let's just give me the benefit of the doubt here) is judged--which means objectivity is sometimes out the window. Occasionally it's just old fashioned cheating and vote buying. So while we smile indulgently at their behavior and flamboyant costumes, let's remember underneath it all, some of these guys have a competitive drive and will and focus second to none.

Once again people, objectivity = uninfluenced by personal prejudices
Subjectivity = Judgment based on personal opinions and prejudices

:D :D

Re: Part II of the XXIst Winter Olympiad....and NBC still sucks.

When watching Ryan Getzlaf take a penalty shot against Jonas Hiller [they're teammates in Anaheim] in the Canada-Switzerland game tonight I couldn't get the thought out of my head that Ilya Kovalchuk may get the chance to do the same thing against Martin Brodeur [they're now teammates in New Jersey] at some point in the tournament. It might even be possible the gold medal would hang in the balance when/if Kovalchuk and Brodeur go one on one.

Thanks, I fixed the post. I really do know the difference, must have been a senior moment. :)
Or maybe the Olympic pressure got to me.
