Re: Part II of the XXIst Winter Olympiad....and NBC still sucks.

Hehehe!! Bully for Kramer!!! Most of the guys there at the Olympics all have jersey or other numbers on them. Would it really kill the reporters there to scan the roster real quick, and maybe try their hand at pronouncing some of the names there??

It's no different than attorneys asking thier clients to state the name for the record when they testify. The Dutch athlete's being a ******. It's not that the reporter didn't know his name, it's that for purposes of editing the tape by some guy sitting at a desk in New York, that info needs to be there.

Re: Part II of the XXIst Winter Olympiad....and NBC still sucks.

Are we really the Yankees though? In the big money sports yes, but some of the other minor athletes from other countries get a lot more of their stuff paid for than our guys do.

We're the Yankees in the sense that our Olympic training facilities are amazing. Ole Einar Bjørndalen's stipend is nice, but so is having hundreds of millions poured into everything from coaching to equipment to computer modeling.

None of this is the athlete's fault, of course, but it would be a true even playing field if they retired the flags and anthems.

That would not sell a lot of TV rights, though -- or we'd wind up with corporate-city teams like Rollerball. :D And the flags are fun, although no amount of patriotic fervor can prevent me from wanting to see Apolo Ono face-plant on his douchy little soul patch.

100,000 free condoms in the Olympic Village. Given that there are a total of 7,000 administrators, coaches, and athletes living in the OV, VANOC must be expecting every one of them to have sex approximately 14 times during the Olympics. :D

Just think how many they'll have to provide when golf is an Olympic sport and they have Tiger to worry about...

So apparently the women's curling team has been getting pointers from the men...

I agree with that to a point I guess. Why do we suck (comparatively) at ski jumping and biathlon then?

I'm beginning to think that if I ever want to participate in the Olympics, I should take up curling.

how many people do you think consider taking up these sports... i was talking to a guy this weekend who is from the Albany area who more or less said that the US olympic people went around the HS and asked if people wanted to try luge. The talent pool is very thin regardless of the tech advantage given by the USOC's resources. Unfortunately you can't teach genetics or innate ability.

Nah. Say you're a speed skater and choose an African nation...no Olympic qualifier and you'll probably be the only member of the team from your country ;)

I don't know why we suck at ski jumping. Maybe we're too fat. We suck at biathlon because all our snipers come from the slave states, while Norway's biathlon training is its actual army training. :D

Not so much with biathlon. Unfortunately, shooting in the US is looked down upon (in many areas), mainly by the Mothers of America, as being too dangerous at young ages. So instead of properly training the youth to have a great respect for firearms, we basically tell them that they are dangerous and to never use them. That, and the stringent testing for lead contamination has shut down many indoor ranges, causing shooting programs to fold. This, along with cross country skiing not being real popular (not a ton of organized areas with a trail, really), means not many people can be prospective biathlon athletes.

Luckilly, I was brought up in a family that hunts, or has a family background in hunting, and was taught at a young age to shoot. This has helped me become a major supporter of shooting, and has sparked my interest/involvement in competitive precision shooting, where I shoot on an NCAA team. Now if I can become a solid cross country skiier... look out 2018.;)
