Paris Olympics

As these games wrap up, just thinking out loud if any of them have a chance to become games here...

Team Handball- no. Not because it's a bad game, or that nobody would be interested- but the need to add buildings to house that size of court would be pretty prohibitive when we've got BB sized gyms all over the country. On the other hand, seeing that all of the teams are from Europe and the Med makes me feel a whole lot less bad about baseball and softball being called so "American". Especially for baseball- given that it's played not only in North, Central, and northern South Americas, but in many countries in Asia. It's spread is much larger than team handball seems to be. It's kind of too bad they chose such a big field, as team handball is a pretty interesting game. Still question some of the tactics, but that's just that.

Mens field hockey- almost impossible. While there are places in a lot of the US that have fields, it's not a lot. And it's also not much of a spectator sport- it combines the slowness of soccer and the unknown whistles of rugby. Team handball has more of chance because it's pretty entertaining and the penalties are not as obscure.

WRT Ruby 7's, it's interesting that it's a thing, but something like Cricket 20/20 isn't. Maybe because it's such a commonwealth game?

All in all, the part that is really a shame is that the NBC Olympics channel went under, as it really is interesting to see all of these various sports played.

I remember when the "America's Cup" or whatever it was called was such a huge deal in the 80's. It got huge coverage. Now it's so far out of my periphery that I don't even know if it's still a thing.

Thailand won a gold medal in taekwondo and has 5 medals in total. The Philippines has 2 golds and 4 total!!

It's still a massive thing, and is still called the America's Cup- since it's named after the ship that one the first challenge. They have progressed to some seriously fast sailing vessels. The current ships are single hydorplaning hulls. Really amazing. Way more money in them than in the 80s.

And it attracts Formula 1 designers, like Adrian Newey, to help design the yachts, as I'm sure you know. Fluid dynamics is fluid dynamics, whether air or water.

The first catamaran ever to compete for the cup was designed by famous airplane designer Burt Rutan (also did the Voyager, first round-the-world flight without refueling). He's on record saying that boats are harder than airplanes due to the interaction of the wind and the waves. Airplanes fly at an almost (plus or minus wind gusts) a fixed angle relative to the oncoming wind, but the waves toss sailboats about to all kinds of crazy angles and the sails (wings) have to keep producing power.

Another major final, another world record for Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone. People really wanted to believe that Femke Bol could challenge Sydney but it just wasn’t happening, Sydney is in a class of her own.

Be interesting to see how much NBC and the LA organizers try to lobby for a schedule change so Sydney could run both the hurdles and the flat in 2028.

Serbia out playing US, 13 point lead going into 4. Maybe next time they will take the best players instead of the players Nike wants
