Oswego State Laker Hockey 2012-13...Part 2..Because Norwich's thread didn't close 1st

Re: Oswego State Laker Hockey 2012-13...Part 2..Because Norwich's thread didn't close

Thanks to all who replied. I thought that this had been mentioned earlier, but appreciate the correct information. May I assume that since only "student athletes" are excluded from the International Student Undergraduate Scholarship program, that this action not a budgetary one, but a compliance one?

Yes - the decline in International students overall threatened the college's ability to conform to NCAA regs despite aggressive foreign student recruiting and outreach. President made the call at the end of last season...it's been widely reported that most (all) of the women hockey recruits bolted...which is ironic since their shorthanded squad had their best season in program history and secured a home playoff berth, which is another first, I believe...

Is that program still available for non-athletes? I see on this page that the International program is not listed. Again, thanks for sharing your knowledge of this topic.

Note the quote currently (3/17/2013) on the Freshman FAQ page.

What merit scholarships does Oswego offer?
Over $4 Million in Merit Scholarships will be awarded to SUNY Oswego students this fall. These scholarships include:
* $18,800 Presidential Scholarships ($4,700 per year, renewable for up to four years; $2,350 without on-campus housing);
* $6,000 Deans' Scholarships ($1,500 per year, renewable for up to four years);
* $3,000 Merit Scholarships ($750 per year, renewable for up to four years);
* $1,000 Transfer Scholarships; (non-renewable)
* $31,960 Residential Scholarships for qualified out-of-state U.S. residents (includes double room occupancy charges, approximately $7,990 annually, for up to four years);
* $48,000 International Student Undergraduate Scholarship; international students only ($12,000 annually for up to four years).
For more information, visit our merit scholarship page.

However, visiting the "merit scholarship page" does NOT show a International Student Undergraduate Scholarship).

So it begs the questions - does it still exist at all and if not was it stopped because of budget issues - or because it no longer "served its purpose".

Sounds like a proactive move to avoid ending up in the same situation as had hit other schools who had too many athletes and not enough civilians on such scholarships.

I can't see the link you are referring to (wifi on this ferry is down and cell Svc downloads are crap), but to the best of my knowledge it was in place this past year and I have not heard there was any changes made....that said, merit and need based incentives are being tweaked all the time....

While I would enjoy blaming Double-D, it would be a slight to W-EC....

I know they played one helluva game. We threw a lot at them in the 2nd period. 3rd not so much. At one point they had us in our zone and they were setting up a power play offense.....except it was even strength. The NCAA announcer also stated as much. Ouch.

Sorry, I know that links don't work on all devices. This is part of the page I was referring to....for your information....you have already given a great response.

Re: Oswego State Laker Hockey 2012-13...Part 2..Because Norwich's thread didn't close

See my various answers Norm...facts are as presented.

Perhaps (I sincerely hope it was), purely coincidental that it was due to the "decline in International students overall threatened the college's ability to conform to NCAA regs despite aggressive foreign student recruiting and outreach." But odd that a decision from the President had no press release - especially considering the large size of the grant and the number of third parties that promoted it. As of last spring, it was still on both the Freasman FAQ page and the merit scholarship page - but with a disclaimer that Student Athletes could not receive it. The way it went down - with no public acknowledgement - looks bad IMO - almost as if they wished no one noticed.

Re: Oswego State Laker Hockey 2012-13...Part 2..Because Norwich's thread didn't close

I am into my third term sitting on the board that raises and allocates the funds for these programs...this was business as usual...programs have been launched and shut down routinely to create the best mix that yields the student profile you are hoping to enroll. You will note the "out of state" program for US citizens - with the college age population of NYState dropping like a rock over the next 10 yrs, out of state recruitment is far more important and will generate a much greater yield in terms of quality and numbers than the international program ever did.

Very critical situation for any northeastern college, public or private. Your responses, as someone involved, are even more appreciated.

I do fully agree with you on the above - that said - the International Student Undergraduate Scholarship was a very special program - and possibly well utilized - as the NCAA did NOT make any public notice of infraction on Oswego's part - and I do understand - and agree - that 'programs are launched and shut down routinely' - but not really on the scope of $48,000 public school scholarships. Not to mention that it is NO secret to the president - or ANY one involved in the financial aid at a NCAA Division III school that ANY international scholarship is subject to extreme review by the NCAA - particularly in the past several years - that said - I stand by my opinion that they handled its termination poorly - and I struggle to avoid the "conspiracy theory" that it its non-public handling was intentionally so as to avoid negative drawing attention to it.

Whatever.....

Re: Oswego State Laker Hockey 2012-13...Part 2..Because Norwich's thread didn't close

Just wanted to congratulate the Oswego Lakers for playing two well played games. It was the best I have ever seen Oswego play in my years as first a Plattsburgh fan and now a Norwich fan (for over 15 years now, wow). You guys have quite the team and although it will be a rebuilding year next year, Coach Gosak will have a team that is capable of winning to be sure. Good luck to all your seniors.

Re: Oswego State Laker Hockey 2012-13...Part 2..Because Norwich's thread didn't close

That sucked......that said, what a GREAT bunch of seniors,they had a great run and just missed out on the final goal, but nothing to be ashamed of,lets hope they all get there degrees and move on and be as successfull in life as there were in their 4 yrs of oz hockey....As for the game, the biggest thing I noticed was their speed,fassssssst, and they sent 2 men in full bore on the forecheck,I think we need to adopt that as well, seemed like this is a out west thing as I remember St N,doing the same, and yes i thought they would ware out but didnt...bad bounce on their 3rd goal but it happens in this game...bottomline they were better last night for sure, and our PP didnt help things..Great yr and the Lakers move on to re-load and see what next yr brings

Re: Oswego State Laker Hockey 2012-13...Part 2..Because Norwich's thread didn't close
