Re: Oswego State Laker Hockey 2012-13...Part 2..Because Norwich's thread didn't close
Here you go:
To the editor, We were among the many fans of DIII hockey to join in the excitement of the weekend in Lake Placid, N.Y. Oswego State was victorious in defeating our own beloved Norwich University Cadets on Friday afternoon; and while we encountered many high-quality fans of the Lakers this past weekend — we are also very disappointed by the actions of others.
During Saturday night's championship game, we witnessed many of the "fans" being very rude, crude and disruptive from their seats at the Herb Brooks arena — pounding on the glass, shouting with foul language at the opponents from Wisconsin, and actually being so disrespectful that they were ejected (and physically removed by NY State Police) from the arena altogether. Security was called in to make it impossible for other "fans" to return to their seats just behind the EauClair players' bench after violating some of the very basic tenets of behavior.
We had hoped to see the team from Oswego go on to victory — particularly for those hard-working seniors who persevered season after season; but after witnessing the outrageous and unsportsmanlike conduct of far too many fans, turned our cheers instead early in the first period of play to the visitors from Wisconsin.
Of course we ALL want OUR team to win! And cheer them on we will! But it is important to remember that these are student-athletes and as a fan we have an obligation to be respectful to the opponents on the ice, and to the legions of supporters of the opposing teams.
Shame on you — Oswego fans — for bringing such outrage and disgust with you that you tarnished the reputation of true fans who know how to cheer on their team properly.
Had it been only one or two — well, they will show up no matter which team is playing; but to witness this behavior from so many, all around the ice was nothing short of disgusting and it's just a shame that YOU cannot be individually banned from attending future games.
Perhaps there should be "class" in fan behavior required. Had there been such a requirement for this weekend, many of the Oswego fans would have failed with a "ZERO." Shame on each of you.
(Per The Palladium-Times policy the letter was signed but I withheld the names)
Can someone post the article or send me an email with what was said because I'd be very curious to see what written.
