Re: Oswego State 2009-10 Regular Season Thread

Back in the day, when rowdy was truly rowdy, we would have to get to Sage rink an hour early to fill in the spots above where our players would come off & on the ice to keep the students from Hamilton from spitting on our players.

when we used to play hamilton, they used to skate the wrong way in warm-ups, caused a nice fight b4 the game one day, old time hockey.-))...they also used to throw sneakers and dirty clothes at us, not funny, but the Zoo at romney was the best, couldnt hear yourself think in that rink.....taste great less filling was the best chant ........

Re Fox -- "the Whitby Wizard"??

re John Sterling -- way back in the day, he used to call Islander radio and sometimes TV. His goal calls were annoying to say the least.

Re: Oswego State 2009-10 Regular Season Thread

A couple notes from the Oswego-Hobart game....
A couple incidents led to a lot of penalties, on both sides. Hobart didn't seem as disciplined as Oswego, which is strange. Usually it seems like the Lakers are taking all the penalties. I don't know how Fox got his game misconduct, but he was furious and had teammates holding him back after the ref called it. So many guys were around, couldn't really see what he did....Tonight was the first game I ever heard this "2 minutes for Spraying the goalie with snow." I've played hockey since I was 3 (I'm 31 now) and I have never seen that, never even knew it was a penalty. I'm a goalie. I've been made a snowman many times, it was never called. I think that is b.s. First period shot totals seemed off. It seemed like Oswego controlled the play, even though they went to the locker room down 1. I looked up at the scoreboard at one point and saw the shots at 7-3. I said to myself that I didn't think Hobart had 3 shots yet. I looked again, and it said HOBART had 7 and Oswego had 3. No way that was true at the time. But thats just details. Overall, Oswego needs to play better 5 v 5. They looked sloppy at times, but did enough to get the job done. Hopefully they don't get stale before the Pathfinder Classic

From the boxscore:

HOB-7 Mike White (2-HITTING AFTER WHISTLE) 17:16
OSW-5 Justin Fox (5-GRASPING THE FACEMASK) HOB 1x4 17:16
OSW-6 Justin Fox (10-Game Misconduct) 17:16
OSW-7 Justin Fox (2-Slashing) 17:16

Indeed, there was:
OSW-9 Chris Brown (2-SPRAYING THE GOALIE)

Spraying the Goalkeeper

SECTION 51. A player shall not deliberately spray the goalkeeper.
PENALTY—Minor.

Though I still think it sounds like a pet marking its territory ;)

Whenever a goalie is turned into a snowman it does insight actions that can result in a penalty.
This Probably was the Refs trying to stop the B.S. that was going on.
In other sports sometimes an official with tell a player to stop "something" and if they do it again they hit them with a "penalty." The ref should have just said it was unsportsmanlike.

Re: Oswego State 2009-10 Regular Season Thread

"Spraying the Goalie"
Tripping

plus,

Yeah, crazy penalty night.

My apologies if Anthony and myself didn't make it all clear on air.

Re: Oswego State 2009-10 Regular Season Thread

OK, Here is my take on the "spraying the goalie" penalty. I sit on that end of the rink near the Oswego bench. The play ended as any other play at the net with the goalie covering up the puck and the offensive player stopping and yes spraying the goalie a little. Problem was that the goalie had just given up 2 goals in about 30 seconds and the students were all over him. In MY opinion, in his frustration he went around one of his teammates and slashed the Oswego player with his stick. The problem I had with the whole call was that the ref was not going to call the "spraying the goalie" penalty until the goalie complained. Call your own game ref.

Re: Oswego State 2009-10 Regular Season Thread

I was working the game for WTOP and I can say that the Lakers impressed me. Overall, this team is built around speed and finese, looking to create their chances off turnovers and such. Tonight, they ran into a exceptionally physical Hobart team who knew that this was the Laker's fifth game in nine days. The first period, the Lakers looked tired and Hobart really took it to them. Gosek must have had another hell of a intermission speech, because the team that came out in the second looked nothing like the team from the first. They went and started hitting Hobart right in the mouth. I think most of the calls made were fair, though with a different ref crew it would have just been a physical game rather than a penalty filled one.

In regards to the "spraying the goalie" call, I think it only got called because Broadwater went out and slashed the Laker who did it (I forget who off the top of my head). With the physicality being displayed by both teams, the refs decided to nail Broadwater and the Laker who instigated it, in my opinion.

Overall, I was very happy with the way the boys in green played tonight. This was a rough stretch, and they proved up to the challenge. KGT stood on his head a few times and the defense really helped him out, blocking a few shots and slapping rebounds away.

Re: Oswego State 2009-10 Regular Season Thread

Goalies get snowed all the time and it usually results in a scrum of some sorts. Calling a penalty for it is a joke. I don't care that it's in the rule books, that's ridiculous.

Re: Oswego State 2009-10 Regular Season Thread

I thought the officiating was absolutely horrid tonight. Lags got punched in the head 2-3 times with the refs looking right at him, no call. He was also crosschecked/punched in the head and back when he got tangled up with a guy on the ice and nothing was called. The interference call on leimbrock to start the game was borderline at best. However even with all of this the lakers still didn't let this get them down and they came out for the 2nd and took it to Hobart. Hobart had a bunch of cheapshots too, especially at the end of the game when #16 i think went after huinink and whitelaw. I thought that was bs. The spraying the goalie penalty was just crap too. It was no different than any other play where the player drives to the net until the whistle.

Re: Oswego State 2009-10 Regular Season Thread

A couple of quick things:

First, Gilchrist's goal should be credited to Whitelaw, I'm 100% sure of it. The puck hit him in the torso before going in.

Second, if the WTOP guys can take a look at 17:30 left to play in the second period, Broadwater might have (about 75% sure) punched Rodrigues in the back of the head as the puck transitioned up ice. I thought it was pretty classless.

Third, Fox's penalty was a complete joke. He was hit late (I wasn't really concerned about that call) and slashed, then took one of the two offending players into the boards basically pushing him. Everett seemed to automatically infer that the facemask was grabbed. Call the facemasking 2 minute and get on with it, calling a fiver is plain stupid. You were the official in the neutral zone at the time, don't make it more than it was.

Fourth, Whitelaw's shot to the fifth goal was nasty. Faked the pass and sniped top corner, nice.

Fifth, the spraying penalty really got me heated. Not only was any "spraying" minimal, but the Hobart player did have a hold of Brown going towards the goal. If I'm Broadwater, I'm pretty happy with Brown spraying him instead of running him over. Afterwards, I thought Broadwater was very lucky not getting an unsportsmanlike for his 'slash'; it wasn't exactly a love tap (closer to spearing).

Re: Oswego State 2009-10 Regular Season Thread

As for the spraying call I've heard from an official that its basically a judgmental call and that its pretty much only called when the refs need to get the game under control and keep an eye on the players. So its pretty much a BS thing to call and is only used when the game is running away from the officials.

Sounds about right, I don't ever recall hearing one called, but scanning collegehockeystats they do happen:

Most recent ones I found:

BGS-4 Ian Ruel (2-ROUGHING ATW) 18:47
NDM-6 Kyle Palmieri (2-SPRAYING THE GOALIE) 18:47

D-III: Saturday, January 27, 2007
Wisconsin-Eau Claire (WEC) at Wisconsin-Superior (WSR)
WEC-5 Sam Bauler (2-Spraying the Goalie) (Served by Peter Bracker) 14:29
WEC-6 Sam Bauler (2-Roughing) 14:29
WEC-7 Dave Coleman (2-Roughing) WSR 0x4 14:29
WSR-7 Jeff Herman (2-Roughing) 14:29
WSR-8 Josh Seifert (2-Roughing) 14:29

From what I saw at the game the refs just lost all control of the game and Everett got whisle happy for he had no clue as how to get controll of what was going on instead of talking with the coaches. The only time the refs talked to the coaches is when they were summoned over. Not the way to ref a game.

Re: Oswego State 2009-10 Regular Season Thread

I believe spraying the goalie is a point of emphasis for this season, as well as grabbing the facemask.

Facemasking can also be a disqualification, so it could have been worse for him.

Someone knows Alex Walsh....;)

Would that give Whitelaw a part in all five goals if they changed the scoring on Gilchrist's goal? I'm too lazy to look at the box score to see if that was one he assisted on:)

With the way he has played this year, it makes me wonder how far the Lakers could have gone last season had he been in net. With the way Potter cra(m)pped the bed in the SUNYAC final, it couldn't have hurt. Oh well, woulda coulda shoulda.

I have to say that I think this is the best 1st semester the Lakers have had in the last 5 seasons (since I started following the team), including the Championship season. Yes they have a loss, but it was only by 1 goal to an Elmira team that is 9-2 and #6 in the country right now. They've also defeated Plattsburgh, Hobart, and Cortland () which they failed to do in 06-07. Throw in the fact that this was supposed to be a rebuilding year and Laker fans have to be extremely excited about what's to come over the break and into next semester. I know I certainly am pumped.
