Re: Oswego State 2009-10 Regular Season Thread
Hear, hear! ORDA really is the archetype to which all small-town development authorities should aspire. I was involved in an event with the Russian national baseball team a few years back (yes, they exist!), and, bearing in mind that this was some random weekend in mid-July, they were:
- absolutely packed to the brim at every hotel in the area
- absolutely packed at Whiteface, of all places, with folks just there to sight-see
- rotating tours through the Olympic Center and its arenas non-stop
- hosting a world-class Aerials exhibition
- prepping for an upcoming Ironman event
- still able to give us VIP treatment throughout the weekend, including a banquet at the Olympic Museum with a bunch of local dignitaries (I'll forever cherish the semi-drunken pictures my friend and I took posing in front of one of Jim Craig's goals from '80)
And of course, the food and drink situation is pretty fun, too. It's actually kinda sad for someone born and raised in Plattsburgh, since it really serves as Exhibit A of a town finding success by promoting its own virtues rather than constantly and clumsily trying to cast itself as some kind of half-hearted Burlington West
If the Lakers don't make it, I hope everyone that is making plans to go up still ends up going anyway because any true hockey fan needs to experience Placid atleast once regardless of whether your team is playing there or not. It's incredible.
