Re: Oswego State 2009-10 Regular Season Thread

Yea, Woodward told me there are no alternates this year. Good point on the new road uniforms too Derek, didn't think about that. As for what I'd like to see: those "bumble bee" uniforms from 05-06 are still my favorite. Cringe all you want, they had style!

Re: Oswego State 2009-10 Regular Season Thread

Hey mike... could you guys please learn how to say the names of the guys on and coaching the team... that'd be great!

Personally, I'm doing my best. I'm only a first semester freshman myself so I'm learning the roster for the first time... everyone is new to me. I mistakenly called Leimbrock, Leimbrook a few times because of a typo on the initial roster I was given.

As for coach Gosek, I saw that you guys were calling that out and I pointed it out to everyone in studio that night. We're doing our best.

Was there anything else you noticed in terms of that?

EDIT: I noticed there were some name mispronunciations during the actual game broadcast Saturday. I can pass them along to the road guys, but that's about all I can do for that.

Re: Oswego State 2009-10 Regular Season Thread

There are probably no new alternates this year because they bought new road jerseys and had to buy a ton of new home jerseys for all the new faces this year.

I don't think they bought any new home ones because all they would is strip the name plate. I don't think they give the players the home whites after they graduate. It would be a good thing to do maybe, but I don't think they do it

I've been one of the ones that have commented about my displeasure with the new broadcast team but of course it's easy to be an armchair quarterback.

I was a guest color commentator for WNYO a few times and was a WTOP In-game analyst so I know it's not easy especially when you're first starting out. I have been following hockey since I was five and know the game fairly well and I stumbled plenty of times on air because of lack experience, nerves etc.

You guys are in a very tough spot coming at a time after one of the best student broadcasters D-III has ever seen in Ryan Maloney. Everything is going to be a huge drop-off.

I applaud your efforts that you're trying and you're on here taking your licks. However, I would say that it'd do a world of help to the guys doing PbP, color and analysis to study the rosters for a good half an hour to an hour to try and memorize as many of the names as you can. I know that's what Andrew Rohlin, Chris Hill, Keith Monette, and Maloney did.

Keep trying and dont give up, once people get off your back a little bit more maybe they can try and provide some pointers on what helped them when they were starting out.

Good luck with the rest of the season. Hopefully by the end of the season we'll all be commenting about how much the broadcast improved from the Royal Military College game to the SUNYAC final win over Plattsburgh at the CC.

I'm not sure what they did last year, did they give the guys their alternate black jerseys?

But i do know that two years ago, Ryan Scott, DiNunzio, Thompson, and Matt Wolf all got their home whites at the awards banquet because I was there.

Thanks

I just want to clarify that there were 2 different announce teams this weekend and will be throughout the year for the most part. Anthony and myself are doing home games (Friday) and we did only the third period of the RMC game (it was somewhat of an audition).

to the SUNYAC final win over Plattsburgh at the CC.

  That would involve Oswego actually BEATING Plattsburgh, 0-8-1??  ;)

In all honesty guys, keep plugging away at it. The way I see it, any coverage of DIII is good coverage. If it wasn't for student radio, this board would probably be pretty dull on the weekends with no live updates other then a cell phone chat.

Be thankful your college has a group of students willing to devote their time and effort in bringing your hockey teams live coverage. Just hopefully you guys at least take the time to get to know the players/staff and history.

I think the may have given the blacks to those that wanted it or wanted to pay for them before they went up to auction. I sure hope you know that they did raffle and/or auction them off seeing as you bought one. I know that some of them got theirs and the yellow script ones from the championship year were kind of the same case because Dormo's suite has a few blacks and a few yellows hanging up on the walls.

As for the whites, they might have done it that year because it was a small class. I know someone who has talked to Trevor Gilligan since he's left here and he says he didn't get his whites. Maybe its a new thing or we're all mistaken.

Oh, I'm more than willing... I've wanted to do play by play my whole life and I'm ecstatic to finally get the opportunity.

I don't know if you guys had your broadcasts archived, but if by chance they are, go back and listen to how both crews handled the games. Take some notes and critique yourselves very liberally. If you struggle to remember a certain play in a game from your own announcing, that's where you can improve next time.

I don't think anyone expects Ryan Maloney quality any time soon, but the more you listen to yourself and put the amount of time/effort to learn names (especially Oswego players) the easier it'll be and you'll find your "voice".

On the other side of the coin, from what little I've been able to see and from what I have heard from people, WTOP has been pretty solid to start the year.

Oh, I've listened the hell out of my broadcast from Friday.

I don't want to comment on Saturday's broadcast since I didn't call it.

Just curious, did you listen either night?

So you admit that you have expressed your displeasure about their performance, and in the same post you call out those who are "on their backs" to get off said backs, and give them pointers. Um, ok.

Ha, Maloney wasn't even the best student broadcaster in SUNYAC last season, let alone DIII, and forget about all time.

I listened Saturday night for the first period, in all honesty, it was too much for my ears to handle so I had updates texted to me throughout the rest of the game.

EDIT: You did point out the technical difficulties, I did stick through them as best I could.

Friday night I listened to a bit of the broadcast through my phone while at the game, I turned it off a little bit after the Lakers tied it at 1 because of the trouble I had listening to the phone over the crowd.

You're right. I'm owning up to it and instead of just blatantly criticizing them, I'm trying to help them and hope that others might follow my example. It's D-III hockey, we all get caught up in the moment sometimes and I realized that I was wrong with how harsh I criticized them without offering anything constructive to help.

Who was better Mr. Alias?

As somebody who put a ton of time into the tv broadcasts (perhaps too much), this is great to hear, especially from somebody who doesn't even go to Oswego. It really does take quite a while to get everything ready both technically AND in the way of on-air talent, so any coverage really is good coverage.

Re: Oswego State 2009-10 Regular Season Thread

Oh, I've listened the hell out of my broadcast from Friday.

That is by far the best way to improve. Are you the kid who IM'd me the other day? I was away from my computer, sorry about that. Also, listen to the pros on NHL.com. I think they still do the free audio web casts for every game. I recorded 10 to 15-minute samples of every play-by-play announcer in the league and then listened to them on my iPod while driving to away games (except for when I had Prez or Token in the car with me on Plattsburgh trips...didn't want to drive them insane).

I don't think they give the players the home whites after they graduate. It would be a good thing to do maybe, but I don't think they do it

The class of '09 received the home whites from '07, the sweaters they were wearing when they won the national championship.

Who was better Mr. Alias?

Brendan McLaughlin, when he was a huge p#$$* and sat out the game against Hobart his junior year and joined me in the booth. Speaking of Midge, he's still talking..a lot: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...brendan-mclaughlin-reacts-to-potters-echl-gig

I was amazed at the quality of the WTOP web casts at the end of last year. Please get those rolling again! Do a fundraiser car wash if you have to!
