Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

I thought the Japanese GP was kind of dull. After the first corner on the first lap that is. Wow, how does Grojean get into another accident like that? Is he really that stupid or is it a combination of bad luck and poor judgment? I really don't know what to think. He's quick, but he just can't seem to finish races consistently. I wouldn't be surprised to see Lotus show him the door for next year and bring in someone with some more experience and better judgment.

Good to see Massa back on the podium. He was fortunate with the first lap incident, but he ran well after that and made the strategy work. Unless he completely falls apart, I think this past weekend's performance will get him another year at Ferrari.

Even though I am not a fan it was cool to see Kamui on the podium at his home GP.

With Alonso's tough luck and Vettel's dominance, the WDC has become a real dogfight!

Did anyone catch the twitter F-up by Hamilton last night? The unintentional comedy was hilarious! For those not in the know...Hamilton slammed Jenson Button (& tagged him in the tweet) for unfollowing him on twitter. Then later he found out that Button never followed him! And in Hamilton's apology he never tagged Button. Classic. Great stuff. :D

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

I saw the first corner death of Alonso's car and I deleted the recording. Vettel's got the title wrapped up.

I totally wish Schumi would have replaced Massa next year. Oh well. I thought Brawn should have waited until Schumi decided what he was going to do before inking Hamilton. Massa supposedly is resigning this week with Ferrari. I think he's too weak a #2 to protect Alonso, but apparently no one else wants a 1 yr deal before Vettel replaces whoever in 2014.

Hamilton is a turd.....

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

Missed the race. And I wonder if Lewis is actually doing his own tweets. Thankfully, I don't tweet or book of faces- I just watch the races, and don't really bother about what they do off the track.

I still like him a lot- only Button would come close.

Massa resigning? are you being facetious? if not, that would be strange as hell. where else could he go at this point?

"Jarett Andretti to test with Andretti Autosport
| Written by Curt Cavin |

Another member of the Andretti family is ready for the road to Indy.

Jarett Andretti, the 19-year-old son of John Andretti, will test with Andretti Autosport on Sunday at the Putnam Park road course.

Andretti will drive a USF2000 Series car for his uncle Michael’s team. Also testing will be Zach Veach in a Firestone Indy Lights car and Shelby Blackstock, the son of singer/actress Reba McEntire, in a Star Mazda Series car.

Andretti has been racing midgets in USAC, driving for Bob East at the Indianapolis Speedrome. That’s the same track where his father won a regional midget championship in 1983. Andretti also was the top rookie in his class at Oswego (N.Y.) Speedway.

Andretti hopes to one day be an IndyCar driver like his father. IndyCar’s Mazda Road to Indy is comprised of the following steps: USF2000, then Star Mazda, then Indy Lights, then IndyCar.

For those needing a family tree lesson, Mario Andretti had two racing sons, Michael and Jeff. John is the son of Mario’s twin brother, Aldo, who lives in Indianapolis."

pretty interesting. I'm glad John didn't try to steer him toward taxicar

The Massa thing came off SPEED. Are you implying those rumors out of Europe are necessarily true? Egads!

Another Andretti in the pipeline, ugh. :( Too bad Rick Mears' son Clint decided to call it quits after Indy Lights.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

On a different car thread, there's a link to a car website that is claiming that F1 will not be on Speed after this season. And Fox has already reported Speed will become Fox Sports, much like CBS sports, NBC Sports, and ESPN (ABC Sports). This same website thinks that NBC Sports is in the running, since they already do Indycar, as well as the Tour de France.

I'm not posting a link, since I've not seen a second site claim this, but I do have to say that it does make sense.

Rumors of this are floating around the forums on Speed's website. I think they are all refering to one source.

Speed will not be speed anymore? That SUX! No channel devoted strictly to cars/racing really, really really sucks. F1 coverage in the US is doomed. This has really ruined my day. I am totally deflated. The only way to fix this funk is the Badgers winning tonight, but I'll still be depressed overall. This channel is a part of my life, as far as viewing racing I would not otherwise get to see.

Looks like about a week ago, reports were strongly coming in that a Speed TV was turning into Fox Sports- and not the local ones, but a national one- much like NBC Sports was spawned from Outdoor Life/Versus channel.

IMHO, a channel really devoted to cars and racing left when SpeedVision changed to Speed TV- and a lot of "entertainment" as opposed to Spot started showing up. Now that we have Velocity showing quite a bit of racing- highlight being Isle of Mann TT, as well as a bunch of entertainment shows (many of which I find better than Speeds), and NBC/Versus picking up Indy car as well as a lot of ALMS coverage- it's just been getting more and more diluted.

We went without F1 for quite a while- when SV picked it up to the point that SpeedTV was created- gone. And S-TV lost rally cars.

Where this goes- who knows. I would not be all that shocked to see ESPN pick up NASCAR, since they seem to be putting a lot of shows on without racing (you may recall, there was a major fight between ESPN and NASCAR- which I can't recall why).

It would really be sad if we lost F1 coverage the same season the US got 2 home races. I bet nobody would show- I probably would not, even though we are planning on going to the New Jersey race.

Good point on Speedvision, Speed went mega crapcar, lost World Rally and stopped showing the BTTC. It still was wat better than nothing. It's a shame World Rally got lost on TV, I was getting into that when it was on Speed/Speedvision.

I don't see this Velocity channel on my Charter listings.

Clearly F1 was picked up by a network, I think Bernie would somehow require them to show all the races so he can max his $. I surely think seeing qualifying will be a thing of the past and the races will be on as tape delayed, which won't bother me too much as long as I can either watch or dvr it. Just please show all the races!

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

Velocity is a HD only channel- used to be Discovery HD, the name change to Velocity just barely added more car stuff. It's pretty good.

But you'll only see it if you have an HD subscription, and one that has ALL of the Discovery family of channels. Sorta like SpeedVision was.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

At this point I'm not too fearful this will happen. Sure, he wants all the power back, I understand that, he knows nothing else but this, but it's not for sale. I don't think the Hulmans have any reason to sell, unless the money amount is just insane. I don't think Barnes, Kalkoven and TG can raise an insane amount of money. Penske and Ganassi are not part of this according to SPEED, and Penske for sure could throw an insane amount of money at it, but I know he's smarter than that to throw his money at a bad investment.

But to address your initial pount, I wil not watch a series headed by TG either. That effing bastarrd screwed up openwheel once eff him. Just give it up and get a real job, you spoiled brat.

Vettel has the F1 title wrapped up. Alonso says he's shocked to qualify as high as he did, 4th. That tells you all you need to know right there. No amount of strategy will get him ahead of Vettel in the race. The team slipping behind RBR meant he would be in risky positions at the start of the races and that has cost him dearly. Man, what a depressing sports weekend so far, and it's only Sat @ 7 in the am! :(

I hope you're right. It's just that losing 7 million dollars in a season...I'm wondering how they can continue on the present course and it seems TG has somehow found some $...
the comforting thing as you note is that neither Penske nor Ganassi are part of this and if that's true then TG's chances are reduced greatly.

I can't wait for the race tonight (I'm looking forward to it more than the UW vs NMU game tonight!)

It's unfortunate that Vettel is starting ahead of Alonso and it's even more unfortunate that that little ***** seems well on his way to title #3. I just don't like him, and definitely do not feel he's as talented as any of the 3x WDC

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

watched all of the Korean race last night...I don't know if Red Bull gives updates to Sebastien and not Webber or not...it really looks like Schumacher and Barichello at Ferrari where the #1 driver so outpaces #2 that you really wonder can there be THAT much difference in talent?

Vettel pulled out about 8 seconds within about 20 laps. Ferrari had 0 chance but it was good to see Alsonso score 3rd place points to keep himself in the race.

Senna outclassed Maldonado early then must have lost it in the last 10-12 laps.

Raikonen was impressive all race long, the Lotus car just has no speed on the long straights

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

I thought it was a decent race at Korea. Vettel was lights out the fastest man on the track. I don't think it would have mattered if Weber got out ahead of him at the start. Vettel was fast enough to beat him.

Too bad Massa had such a horrible start to the season. Otherwise Ferrari might have let him pass Alonso but like a good teammate he stayed where he should.

I read this morning that NBC is going to air the first four races of the 2013 F1 season on NBC (live) and then the remaining 16 on NBC Sports channel. No news on if they will air practice or qualifying.

Ferrari should have let Massa pass Alonso, Vettel has the title locked up. He may have been able to chase down Webber for 2nd, unless Webber was taking it easy because Vettel was.

2013/2014...At least we'll get to see the races.

Kinda related....I see tix for the V8 Supercars @ Austin start @ $83.00. I was shocked by such a high price for a series that isn't that well known at all in the US.
