Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

I'm not a big fan of loyalty in sport as it usually gets one nowhere. However, I do under stand your point.

Penske guys have 6 wins (Helio-2, Power-3, and Briscoe-1) while Andretti has 4 all by RHR.

got it, thanks. I sort of forgot about Helio's early season victories.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

Did they get Alonso's car fixed? The original quote I saw by him said that it was still broke when he went back out in Q3. I think it has to do with it being a brand new chassis for him as the last one was destroyed at Spa.
Can they fix that while the car is in parc ferme? If not, he starts from the pits??

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

what an amazing crowd @ Monza!

I have to say I'm happy for Hamilton and Alonso. Good on Hamilton to take the win and it seems the rift between he and the team has not healed. He walked away from them apparently after the race before a steward pointed him back to them to celebrate.

Rumor is Hamilton to Mercedes. That would necessarily mean either Schumacher is retiring or Rosberg replaces Hamilton at McLaren?

I'm sort of hoping either Alonso or Hamilton win the title. If it's Red Bull let it be Webber, Vettel bugs the hell out of me and I still feel he's overrated.

B. Senna takes 1 point. I wish I'd have paid more attention to the early races, he's had an up and down season. Not sure if he'll be back or not.

Did this really happen? I stopped watching as soon as the race was over. Interesting development.

Totally agree. I don't really know why but I can't stand Vettel. Webber seems like a decent guy though.

I tend to think that B. Senna's F1 career is very much up in the air at this point. He's done nothing to impress me this season in a decent mid-field car but he's doesn't screw up too much either. He has been out qualified by Maldonado 9-4, so he's not as quick. But on the other hand he is better at bringing the car home in one piece as he's beaten Maldonado 9-4 on finishes. He's only 4 points behind Maldonado and Maldonado has that win to his point total.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

Hamilton, Button and Massa looked like they were all going to a firing squad right after the race the way none of them were happy after they climbed out of the cars and struck a pose before going to get the hardware. Overall a great race.

Hamilton and Massa are done with their respective teams. Massa's 1 good run doesn't make up for 2 yrs of being too far behind Alonso and the way Hamilton acted after the race clearly showed he's not behind his team.

I am not so sure about either moving on. Where is Hamilton going to go that will give him better (or even as good) a chance of winning? He's not going to Ferrari as there is no way he'll work with Alonso again. And Mercedes? Well they aren't exactly lighting it on fire. Although I do feel Hamilton would be an upgrade over Schumi (at this point in his career) and Rosberg but is his talent enough to make them contenders? I wonder about Lotus though. Maybe they boot Grojean? Can they afford Hamilton and would he be a good fit with Kimi?

And Ferrari, while admittedly Massa is my favorite driver, I just don't know who is really an upgrade that would be available and be willing to be the #2 to Alonso. Maybe Perez would be brought in as he has some talent. Certainly not Maldonado as he wrecks too much. The remaining mid-field and back marker teams don't have the drivers that I think are of any interest to Ferrari. One driver who I think will get a serious look will be Adrian Sutil. He's quick and free. I don't think that mess with the lawsuit would scare Ferrari. But when all is said and done, I think Massa will be back on a one year deal. Especially if he keeps up his recent form.

The one other driver (besides Sutil) I would like to see get another chance at a top flight team as I think he could be much better now is Heikki. I think he done a stellar job at Caterham. He's most definitely the best driver in the back markers teams and better than any driver on the mid-field teams too. I think Caterham would be struggling even more if it wasn't for him.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

With both Hamilton and Massa, it would be a situation where they don't have anywhere to go (in a pre-arranged manner) because they both got fired.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

amazing race @ Fontana!

congrats to Hunter-Reay and Andretti!

Will Power...man, what's wrong w/this guy? a complete unforced error and contrasting that to RHR's baltimore race and his performance tonight there's no question who the better driver is. Power lacks mental toughness and it's cost him dearly

what does the captain do now? go down to 2 cars now that he lost the RHR sweepstakes? if he gets a 3rd driver does that driver become the #1? Honest question. Helio is nearing the end of his career though he's still capable of winning races obviously (probably not a title threat anymore) WP is just a wildcard now...

I feel bad for Kanaan...what chit luck.

Helio came on strong at the end and who knows? if he doesn't crash does he catch RHR?

Barrichello looked great all night and the engine blows, ****

Katherine Legge with a great (and quiet) 9th place finish

all in all, a great season for Indycar despite the fact America has forgotten about the sport

oh yeah, Ed Carpenter...yawn. I don't like that guy, can't turn right and is married into the TG family.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

It's too bad that the race was Saturday night- which is against some serious college football- I think more would show up and watch if the race was on Sunday.

Good race, though- it was really surprising to see the lead moving around quite a bit- the fast guys never really could get the bit for the entire race.

But what Ryan and Andretti did was pretty awesome- to go from just hanging with Will (that's the best they could do at the time) and ALMOST getting lapped, to getting the car good enough to finish with the championship! I've been a RHR fan for quite a while, so this is very cool

Thankfully, the season is over for the last "Lotus" engined team. Get a real motor next year, and be competitive.

Good finish!

(side question- why do they run side by side restarts on a road course, but non a big open track like Fontana? I hope they get rid of that start- that sucks)

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

quick question: RHR mentioned adding Sebastien...whowas he talking about? an engineer?

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

Ugh. I give my Penske boys an epic F on the race. Power just can't get it done. All he had to do was stick to RHR, why drive it down so low where you normally wouldn't in a non-critical situation. Then Briscoe screwed up and couldn't stay ahead of RHR, and then Helio could not get ahead when it mattered the most. And then to lose to an Andretti guys sucks bad. Too bad Briscoe won won Sonoma ahead of Power....I'm not opposed to team orders. As far as the Penske line-up for next year, I like all the drivers. I wouldn't mind seeing Briscoe replaced with someone who is better on ovals, which seem to to Penske's weakpoint right now (though Briscoe arguably is the best oval guy out of the 3). Penske just can't get it done in critical races on ovals.

RHR isn't a bad guy, I just dislike his boss. Alot. I was so hoping Marco was going to do something stupid at the end before he jumped the start.

Sato is just a epic crasher when we gets towards the front, he just pushes that 1% too far and it bites him in the rear everytime.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

McLaren is now courting Sergio Perez in the event Hamilton leaves...it's difficult to believe Hamilton would allow the situation @ Spa to escalate to this. he's got to know that for now McLaren is his best option unless Red Bull or Ferrari come calling. I just don't see Mercedes improving enough to be able to match them consistently.

Also read that Schumacher might be back for another season...

I generally don't take the press seriously. Being that it's probably British sourced- they are the worst in digging up and creating situations that are not real.

My GP tours news was so filled with "he's talking with them" it wasn't even worth reading.

ah, got it. thanks

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

I wonder if any of the teams have a new killer car in development that Hamilton knows about.?

Being how closed the teams are to anyone, I doubt that. But Lewis may know something about their new engine that could mean that it's bad. Next year should be the new V6 engine. Well, I kinda doubt that.

Or this is all being made up so that papers and websites will find more eyes.

in other news, we are looking into a few races next year- if there is a late July one- perhaps Germany. And if the race in New Jersey happens- we have friends in New York were we can squat at their appartment. No chance of going to Texas- just too painful.

The new engines come out in 2014. I'm not sure if that is what you meant by next year.

If the NJ race does happen, I am planning on going down as it is only a ~3 hour drive for me. However, I am pretty skeptical that the race will take place.
