Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

The new engines come out in 2014. I'm not sure if that is what you meant by next year.

I'm not keeping up with the times well- they were originally supposed to be 2013. So basically, a 2013 car will be the same as a 2012 car. Just new, and expensive. oh, well. Some of the news that runs around the races really gets old fast.

Yeah, I think Mercedes and Ferrari whined about the timing of the new engines, so they won't come out until 2014.

For next season the "big" changes will be the elimination of the stepped nose and the double DRS.

The stepped noses will be gone next year? That's a bummer. ;)

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

A little worried about this weeks F1 race. If someone loses it in certain parts of the circuit, there's no way not to hit them. With the course so bumpy someone is bound to get sideways.

Hamilton to Mercedes
Perez to McLaren
Schumacher to the sidelines (for now)

I have to say I am shocked about both Hamilton and Perez moving.

As has been widely rumored, and now with Perez moving to McLaren, Vettel coming to Ferrari must be happening in 2014. Ugh.

My guess is Schumi will end up at Willams.

So am I, some- the winds of "something" kept swirling around Lewis. Seems like he got so hounded by the press while at McLaren- couldn't frown without someone guessing an underlying meaning of it. And it's not as if they've really done a bang up job all the time for him- back in 2007, had they got him in a lap earlier at Spa, he would have easily taken the championship. The 2008 championship should have been a lot easier. And this year, the early season pit stops were horrible. Once the team was on their game, he was as well.

funny about Perez and Ferrari- everyone thought it was a done deal, without thinking about sponsors. As in- Sergio's and Ferrari's don't get a long.

Well, now that Hamilton is done, the silly season should fall out pretty fast.

edit- didn't dawn on me that Lewis is going where Jensen came from- Brawn. Wouldn't it be ironic if Ross could net him a WC.

I wonder if the pressure of being British, young, and at McLaren was just too much for him. Will Buxton was speculating this AM that part of the problem is that McLaren has very strict rules about the drivers marketing themselves and that was part of the problem. In that Hamilton wants to become bigger than just a F1 driver.

Are you talking about Santander and Telmex not getting along?

I did read this morning that Vodofone and Telmex are partnering in the central and south America's. So that probably didn't hurt Perez's move to McLaren.

Possibly. There are still a lot of seats open. I think the seats are:

1. Second seat at Ferrari (I think Massa says on a 1 year deal)
2. Sauber seat (I think Alguersuari gets this one)
3. Williams second seat (Senna's)
4. Both seats at STR.
5. Second seat (Grojean's) at Lotus (love to see Heikki get a shot at this)
6. The backmarker teams. Who really cares.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

I'm not terribly shocked Lewis is moving on, I think he was burning his bridges with McL. I am totally shocked Schumi is getting booted by Braun, considering the awesome things those 2 have accomplished together. Schumi has made a few unforced errors this year, but I think he's just trying so hard to squeeze blood out of a rock. I'd like to see Schumi back at Ferrari and replace Massa. Massa just isn't holding up his end of the deal by stealing points from Alonso's competition and I'd love to see if Schumi really has it yet. We'd find out if he was partnered with Alonso.

Aging superstars move down the team lists, not up. Or, they end up in Indy Car.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

So Firestone was ready to walk away from Indycar, but Indycar begged them to stay, which they did, at a cost of doubling the tyre prices. So now Firestone is crying about the fact Indycar is shopping for tyre supplies for 2014. I applaud RB for not taking the Firestone situation lying down. I do not, however, want a tyre war. Tyres should not be a reason someone wins, it should be car and driver as the only factors.

Speaking of tyres, why don't they make the tyres super hard? I think that would make the racing very entertaining with all sorts of slipping and sliding. You then wouldn't get all this off-line clag that inhibits passing in creative spots.

totally agree. I hope for Firestone to stay on as the sole supplier and let hoosier or whomever pound sand.

in other news - it sounds like either John Barnes or Tony George have once again attempted to dump on Randy Bernard (and consequently the series) at a most inopportune - http://auto-racing.speedtv.com/article/miller-the-cult-of-negativity

what would be awesome is if Bruno Senna begins to kick *** (he's 8th in practice at Suzuka thusfar, I know he's generally been outqualified by maldonado but he's seemed to have outraced him quite a bit) and Williams improves in time, while Nicolas Prost enters F1 in about a year or two

SENNA Vs. PROST II!

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

Not quite OWR but I read that Sebastien Loeb has announced his retirement from WRC. He's going to run a limited schedule in 2013 and be done in 2014. I don't know if anyone else follows WRC but it had been amazing watching him over the past several years. Those rally racers are nuts! Their ability to adapt to the circuit and conditions is amazing.
