Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

Kinda related....I see tix for the V8 Supercars @ Austin start @ $83.00. I was shocked by such a high price for a series that isn't that well known at all in the US.

Which weekend are they going to be there? I've had my eye on going to that since it was first mentioned they'd be racing there.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

Again, didn't watch the race, replay was at a bad time, so I looked up the results, saw Vettel win, and Hamilton struggled- tires. Oh, well.

As for the future of F1 on TV, NBC has announced coverage- http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/49410415/ns/sports-motor_sports/ First 4 races on NBC, the rest on NBC Sports, Pracitce and qualifying on NBC Sports, and actual streaming!!!

Hope the coverage is good.

I thought Hamilton had one of his better races considering the tyre wear and the extra drag (turf caught on his car) he was carrying around.

Ferrari signed Massa to a one year deal. Good news for him. The one year deal implies the much rumored Vettel to Ferrari in 2014 will happen or they don't have any confidence in Massa's long term viability.

Massa deserves another year with Ferrari. Very pleased to hear that.

That is for the whole weekend for reserve seats. That doesn't sound too bad to me. GA start at $69 for the weekend.

May 17-19, 2013.

And if anyone is interested MotoGP is April 19-21, 2013. $89 for 3-day GA and $133 for 3-day reserved.

Interesting to see red going around the complete track at COTA. I've seen patches of color at other tracks, but don't remember seeing anything all the way around. Seems like it may be a bit distracting, but will have to wait to see racing on it to judge.

COTA construction update

I doubt I'd find it distracting to drive on, but I'm not sure how much it's needed. The white boundary lines should give enough contrast to clearly define the track edge, at least in daylight. If they were doing night racing, I'd understand it more, as the more contrast you can get at the track edges at night, the better.

Maybe the red is the first coat, then they'll put the white stripes on in the traditional manner?

From the release:

The overall design of these areas will show the distinctive COTA color red along the sides of the track. Run-off areas will illustrate diverse shapes in red, white and blue to commemorate the American heritage of the circuit.

I would assume the actual corners are still striped but the rest will be quite visually interesting.

Cool. I liked the red paint, but hey, I'm from WI, I love red. Paint. Thinner.

open wheel mailbag! Please tell Robin Miller and also Curt Cavin at Indystar your feelings on Tony George's attempt to buy Indycar...These guys can give our fan response directly to Randy Bernard and to the Hulman board.

It's not surprising to me that Tony George is arrogant enough to want to do this, yet dumb enough not to be aware of just how terrific his failure was but what has me completely incredulous is John Barnes and Kevin Kalkoven...*** are they thinking?

judging from the reactions I'm seeing online Indycar will lose 2/3 of it's diminished fanbase if TG is back...that would kill even the 500 as you can't have a 1/2 or 1/3 full IMS on race day in may and make a series go

The Red Bull trophy case

Yeah, they win a lot.

So I go to Cousins and get a yummy sammy for lunch, open up SPEED.com, and promtly blow my Cousin's all over my desk. There actually an offer on the table?!?!?!!?!?......*** I really didn't see that coming. From what Miller is reporting, there won't be enough support on the Board to give him the reigns, but if they somehow re-shape the board and get rid of the impartial businessmen on it, it's ovah - and I am OUT!

Wasn't Kalkoven one of the last CART guys to come over to the IRL? And how he's in bed with the dude he tried to defeat. Single Car Barnes is in it too? He's just p/o'ed he's been run over like a freight train by Ganassi, Andretti and Penske. My mind is blown. How do Penske, Ganassi and Andretti feel about this? When this dies on the table, Indycar better boot TG/Carpenter, Kalkoven and Barnes (did he even have a team this year?) out of the league. Certainly hey have the power to do so.

totally agree. Tony George should be booted from the series and he can take that no-talent hack Ed Carpenter with him. Kalkoven and Barnes must be out of their minds. They can go too. There are legions of fans writing in now and saying they're done with Indycar if this happens, I'm right there with em, I'll pair down to just F1 then

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

TG has resigned from the board, citing a conflict of interest as he attempts to by Indycar.

"I realize that my recent efforts to explore the possibility of acquiring INDYCAR represent the appearance of a conflict, and it is in everyone's best interest that I resign from the Hulman & Company board," George said. "It goes without saying that I want to do what is best for this organization."

So is he just exploring to offer or was there an offer? Mr. Miller has some splaining to do. Either way I take it as he's try to better position himself to buy it by removing the conflict of interest.

Jersey F1 has been postponed for next year, like we didn't see that coming.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

It's an ominous sign. Why would he resign from the board unless he thought he had a serious chance of acquiring the series?

this is terrible. I won't like not having an indycar series to follow (because I won't follow a TG led or owned series) as I'm under the growing impression that TG is well on his way to being in charge,

but I do have fond memories: Danny Ongais @ Milwaukee, seeing 2 of Greg Moore's 5 wins in person, seeing Zanardi win, Nigel Mansell roaring around the Mile in 93, etc, guess these will suffice on weekends where F1 isn't racing starting next season

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

Lots of driver and track fluff in this week's F1 news at GPTours.

But this caught my eye- http://www.gptours.com/index.php?command=show&what=news&id=8595

McLaren is NOT going to run a Mercedes engine in 2014. Very NOT. Interesting.

(I don't put much into the Honda ending, at the moment, even though one of the most iconic cars of all time was a McLaren Honda, with a 1.5l Turbo V6...)

That's interesting. I wonder what is behind that? So will it be Renault or Ferrari (not likely) behind Button and Perez?

Miller seems to think TG resigning is a good sign, but I still think it is indeed "ominous", as solo put so well.
