Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

So now the chicane is gone on the main strait at Baltimore and the cars are getting rally car air under them at the RR tracks. Didn't anyone foresee this? Ugh. I suppose they can just as the chicane back in, but the lack of foresight is not good.

they are back in San Jose??? wow. ;)
I am so pumped for Spa!

Heck, yea. Memories. :)

It was interesting to watch Grand Prix a few weeks ago, to see how very much different Spa is now than it was in '67. Massive difference.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

I'm here in Baltimore watching the race and they added a chicane in the middle of the day which caused a delay. Cars still on the course, american le mans series, at 6 30 pm. Getting around here is very tough, best to get a hotel and not have to drive anywhere., also hard to watch the race, as moving around the circuit is not that easy, but overall the race is good so far.

incredible weather for qualifying at Spa- after rain.

And fun results-
Button
Kobyashi (!)
Maldonoado
Raikkinenen
Perez
Alonso
Weber
Hamilton
Grosjean
Di Resta

note the absense of Vettel, Schumi, or Masa in the top 10. Wow.

Looks to be an interesting race tomorrow.

Liked the sign today @ Eau Rouge -- "Don't Lift!"

Looking at the rumor sites, and there's talk of alternating the French and Belgian Grands Prix. Bernie wants Paul Ricard, but the new French President wants Magny Cours. Either way, Spa should never leave the F1 calendar, along with Monza.

turn one at road atlanta can be done flat in a FF, however in an Atlantic car it can't. It was the hardest thing to do even in a Ford and basically 90% of the time I couldn't do it. (A little depended on what top gear you had in the car coming up the hill to the bridge.)
Of course this was before the last curve was added and the crest of the hill was lowered some so speeds around turn one now are around 100 instead of 125.

Well, that start sucked. Grojean needs a nice penalty after that mess.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

interesting end to the race. Kudos to Barrichello for pushing Power out of the way. the last 2 races have been strong for him.

Power 17 points up on Hunter-Reay...something tells me this is Ryan's year, in a 500 mile race anything can happen of course but those really aren't Power's strongest races

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

Totally agree. Glad to see Grojean will get to watch next weeks race at Monza.

Button and his tyre management are amazing.

did you see the tweet from Lewis Hamilton this weekend re: Button receiving an improved front wing which meant a deficit of 6 10ths of a second on straightaway speed for Lewis?

he's in hot water for posting the picture of the telemetry but he's 100% right to be ****ed off. if McLaren is now playing favorites it's tough to cheer them on

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

Races....Indy was great until the end, when they kept having the yellows. I loved the rain part, that was really cool with all the strategy there. I really like Power, but when he gets in traffic he just can't get through it as well as one would think, considering he's so stinking fast by himself, kind of frustrating. This 500 mile race is going to be very interesting.

F1 the start really took the wind out this Ferarri fan's sail, then it was great with Schumi being up there, then he had problems. Button vs Hamilton: If I were Hamilton, I'd be mad too, as the lead dog points-wise, he ought to get any single updates first, but him posting his telemetry on line is worthy of an internal suspension for sure. You just can't do that sort of thing. I'd even consider firing the guy.

Indy silly season....So Penske offered Briscoe's seat to Paganaud, but he can't get out of his contract with Schmidt (who is also taking on Rubens as a 2nd driver), so he offers RHR (as does Rahal, who is dumping Sato & picking up his kid and his $), who was just about to resign with Andretti. Briscoe could end up w/Rahal, Penske, Andretti or no one. So much for Rodger wanting Newgarten. As a Penske fan, I like the fact Rodger is going after established drivers (win now) vs young guys (develop and not win now). EJ Viso may be starting up his own team, that is a LOL for sure, which means KV would be just down to Kanaan.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

Interesting article in todays USA Today on Indycar.

Baltimore had it's share of problems and the biggest question mark was, can they not lose quite so much money. Local merchants were unhappy after last year so we'll see what comes out this fall regarding the future of the race. Penske is right, they have more to worry about than the price of chassis parts.

Yes, huge difference. I was there in 1968 (year after Dan Gurney won), and watched the race at Au Rouge. There was no bleacher there then and people lined the track with just a fence :eek:. I was one of them. Amazing changes for the better.

I still don't understand how Maldonado jumped the field without false starting. Anyone have any insight?
